The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 1 Recap: The Matrimonial Momentum

So much for happy endings apparently, huh?

For while The Big Bang Theory Season 9 Episode 1 was titled “The Matrimonial Momentum,” that momentum didn’t lead right into marital bliss for Leonard and Penny.

By the end of the premiere, in fact, their relationship was on shaky ground after Penny learned that her new husband worked alongside the woman with whom is sort of cheated.

After (just barely) carrying his bride over the threshold of their hotel room, the newlyweds had their second kiss as a married couple interrupted by Penny being unable to shake thoughts of Mandy Chow.

And Leonard wasn’t very comforting by revealing that he still worked with her at CalTech.

As a result of this confession, the couple came back to Pasadena, where Leonard spent his wedding night with Sheldon. Ouch!

Sheldon needed the company, though, because Amy broke up with him after he told her to “think faster” about the future of their relationship because “those eggs have a sell-by date.”

This comment caused the entire gang to miss streaming Leonard and Penny’s vow exchange … and it served as the nail in the Shamy coffin for now.

Amy officially split from her boyfriend due to these insensitive comments, which prompted Sheldon to call his devout Christian mother (guest star Laurie Metcalf!) and ask that she remove Amy from her prayers. Again: Ouch!

So The Big Bang Theory opener was quite dramatic. And it didn’t even address Raj and Emily’s “I Love You” that closed out last season in May.

Is this really it for both of the sitcom’s main couples?

Ponder their future as you sit back and watch The Big Bang Theory online prior to next Monday’s follow-up.
