Bam Margera: Back to Boozing After Family Therapy
If you watched the first season of Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn, which wrapped up its run on VH1 last night, then you’re probably aware that former Jackass star Bam Margera isn’t doing so well these days.
It seems Bam has spent his years out of the spotlight struggling with a serious alcohol addiction triggered in part by the death of his friend Ryan Dunn in 2011.
Sources say Bam agreed to do the show largely because the dry environment, along with the presence of his mother and a dozen television cameras would force him to dry out.
But even with those sobering influences, Bam snuck booze into the treatment facility, but he eventually came clean and dumped it down the drain.
The 36-year-old former skateboarder sobered up (with the help of Michael Lohan, no less), but it seems his resolve weakened shortly after he finished filming.
VH1 recently caught up with Bam’s mother, April Margera, to see how her son is holding up.
As always, April put a positive spin on things, but it’s clear from her remarks that Bam’s sobriety didn’t last long:
“We have a much better level of communication,” April told the network.
“I’m not afraid to say things to him when he’s messing up. I’m not afraid to come right out and say, ’Look, you need to start thinking about this again.’”
She clarified that he’s “messed up” a few times since leaving treatment, most recently when a friend gave him a bottle of booze as a gift.
“I’m not saying that he’s not taking responsibility for himself. I feel like he’s right on the edge of it,” April says.
“He want to build a new skate park and he’s going to go do it but we’re trying to work really hard with each speed bump trying to get through it.”
“Is he the guy to go to rehab now? No, but he is considering it. We’ve talked about it. I think the lines of communication are much better and he’s starting to figure out why he’s doing all of these things.”
Sigh. April, no one’s the “the guy to go to rehab” until they go to rehab.
We know being the sweet, permissive mom is your thing, and you’re great at it, but it’s sounding like some tough love is in order here.

Bam Margera Turned to Booze Due to Childhood Trauma, Mother Claims
One of the most compelling figures on the first season of VH1’s Family Therapy has been former Jackass star Bam Margera who’s simultaneously working on his relationship with his mother, April Margera, and detoxing after more than a decade of severe alcoholism.
On this week’s episode, April speculates about the cause of Bam’s lifelong attraction to danger and self-destructive behavior:
“Well, Bam had this show, and before I knew it he was able to have a show about anything he wanted on the whole planet, to be a reality,” April says during a group treatment session.
“When Bam was younger, [his father] Phil kind of started the little pranky thing. Like when I was walking into my room, he’d be hiding behind the door,”
“Taking them to ‘Incinerator Road.’ Incinerator Road was this scary, spooky road. So he’d take the kids and he’d put his arm out the window and bunk on the roof. You know, [saying it was] dead people falling on the roof, and it really affected him!”
It felt like a bit of a stretch at first (Lots of folks were frequently pranked as kids, and they didn’t all grown up to put crocodiles in their parents’ house or befriend Michael Lohan.), but Bam seems to agree that his reckless lifestyle began on Incinerator Road.
Later in the episode the Margeras participate in an emotional experiment that reveals the depth of April’s concern for her son.
The patients are taken to a cemetery, where April is forced to quite literally confront her worst nightmare.
It seems that Bam’s alcoholism had gotten so bad in recent years that April frequently feared for his life.
In the cemetery, she breaks down after seeing a tombstone with his name on it.
“I will never let that happen,” she sobs. “That’s why I am here! I don’t want that to happen.”
Powerful stuff, and a potent reminder that reality TV can – on very rare occasions – be a powerful force for positive change.
Watch Family Therapy Wednesdays on VH1 for more.
Just be warned that the show has an incredibly high Lohan factor.

Bam Margera Sneaks Booze Into Therapy, Breaks Down Over Death of Ryan Dunn
During his says as a professional skateboarder and Jackass stuntman, Bam Margera became famous for his ability to laugh in the face of danger and cheat death with a smile on his face and a Miller High Life in his hand.
Sadly, the excess of Bam’s wild 20s has taken a heavy toll, and left him, at just 36, a shattered, lonely man with a crippling addiction to alcohol.
In the above clip from last night’s episode of VH1’s Family Therapy, Margera opened up about the death of his friend and Jackass co-star Ryan Dunn.
Dunn was killed in a car accident while driving drunk in 2011.
In the years since, Margera has paid tribute to his fallen friend, but has mostly remained tight-lipped about his personal response to the tragedy – until last night.
“It just seems like everything at one point came crashing down,” Margera says. “That’s when it wasn’t even drinking for the fun or for the social part of it. It was just drinking because [of] total depression, kinda.”
Later in the episode, Margera admitted to sneaking a bottle of vodka into the Family Therapy house “in case of an emergency.”
He handed it over to Dr. Jenn Mann unopened, and it was poured down the drain in celebration.
Watching the deeply troubled Margera get sober seems to have been viewers favorite part of the series thus far, even if he had to form a close friendship with Michael Lohan in order to do so.
Hey, whatever works.

Bam Margera Gets Sober, Buddies Up to Michael Lohan on Family Therapy
The last time we heard from him, Bam Margera was getting beat up after trash-talking some random Europeans while on tour doing…whatever it is Bam Margera does on tour.
So when Bam popped up on the debut season of VH1’s Family Therapy a few weeks ago, we weren’t surprised to see that he’s since admitted he has a problem with alcohol. We were a bit surprised by his choice of sober companion:
Yes, that’s Bam bonding with Michael Lohan, which – fun fact – is actually far more dangerous than any stunt he ever pulled on Jackass.
Much of the the show is typical VH1 trainwreck-rubbernecking disguised as an earnest attempt to help some C- and D-listers battle their demons, and that’s fine.
The insane relationship between Tiffany “New York” Pollard and her mother is enough to justify the series’ existence.
But Margera and Lohan both take the show from typical guilty-pleasure reality TV to disturbing glimpse into the minds of some very troubled men.
Many fans have noted (with an upsetting amount of schadenfreude) that Bam no longer resembles the slender, energetic daredevil his fans knew and loved.
Lohan, on the other hand, is exactly as we remember him:
He’s still terrorizing Dina Lohan, who, in turn is still lying about everything she can, including her well-documented habit of doing coke with her daughter.
We don’t think VH1 bargained for quite this much sadness when they picked this roster of celebs.

Vincent "Don Vito" Margera Dies; Jackass Star Was 59
Vincent Margera – the uncle of Bam Margera, who frequently appeared in the Jackass TV show and movies – has passed away at the age of 59.
Known as “Don Vito” to fans of the franchise, Margera had reportedly been struggling with kidney and liver damage for several years.
Sources say he slipped into a coma last month and never fully recovered.
According to a statement from Bam’s mother, April Margera, Vincent quietly passed away at home this morning.
This is the second tragedy in four years for Bam, whose best friend Ryan Dunn died in a car accident in 2011.
Sadly, in his later years, Vincent Margera became as famous for his troubled personal life as for his on-screen antics.
Margera was convicted of sexual assault in 2007 after an incident in which he allegedly groped two young girls at an autograph signing. He avoided prison time after reaching a plea deal.
As part of his sentence, Margera was forbidden to participate in televised portrayals of the “outrageous and profane” Don Vito character that he created.
Margera complied with the court’s order, but continued to make public appearances until his health issues began to make travel impossible last year.
“Don Vito” became a trending topic on Twitter within moments of the announcement of his death, with thousands of fans paying tribute to a troubled man who lived to make others laugh.
