Meredith Phillips, Former Bachelorette Star, Says She Was Drugged and Assaulted on Season 2
Meredith Phillips, the star of ABC’s Bachelorette back in 2004, said this week on a podcast that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by a crew member on the set of this long-running ABC reality show.
It’s a damning and troubling accusation.
Per Reality Blured, Phillips made this allegation while speaking to Steve Carbone (aka Reality Steve) in response to a question about the most challenging aspect of production.
“Well, besides being always really tired and some of the producers were – how do I say this? Helpful but not helpful, in terms of trying to make me relax,” Phillips replied, somewhat mysteriously.
She then elaborated:
“Normally, I wouldn’t talk about this, but I’m going to tell you because it’s bothered me for years.
“And I know another friend of mine who was working on the show felt the same experience I did, about getting roofied and in a hot tub and kind of accosted.”
Wait… what? Roofied?
As in: someone drugged Phillips and took advantage of her?
Yes, she says.
The allegedly awful deed was done by “a masseuse that a producer hired to come into my room and to give me a massage,” says Phillips.
The ex-reality star says she assumed the pill this person gave her was an “aspirin or something to loosen up my back.” But…
“It definltey wasn’t that, that’s for sure. The last thing I remember was she got naked and she was in the tub with me, and rubbing my back and rubbing areas probably she shouldn’t have.
“And then I was put in bed. I woke up naked. Don’t remember much.”
Yikes. That’s extremely disturbing to hear.
Phillips, whose season of The Bachelorette was filmed in 2003 and aired in early 2004, said that the experience was “hard for me to talk about because I think I’ve put it somewhere else in my brain.”
She was rejected by Bob Guiney on The Bachelor Season 4, finishing as the third runner-up, prior to starring as The Bachelorette and selecting Ian McKee as her winning suitior.
The couple broke up in February of 2005.
Thinking back on this horrifying incident, Phillips said once whatever she had taken kicked in, “I literally couldn’t even move my body, so I have no idea what the pill was, at all.
“All I know is that I was told that, ‘This will make you feel better."”
ABC is yet to address this charge, but we’d expect the network to make a statement at some point.
Why didn’t she leave the series after this happened?
There was “definitely a part of me” that wanted to, she acknowledges, “but I am also the kind of person that finishes what she starts…
“It is a huge deal. I have worked through it.”
The story has come out just days before Becca Kufrin debuts as The Bachelorette on Season 14.

Bijou Phillips to Daniel Franzese: My Bad on All the Gay-Shaming!
Bijou Phillips has issued a heartfelt apology to Daniel Franzese.
A day after the Mean Girls actor blasted the actress for how she treated him on the set of the movie Bully, Phillips has acknowledged that she acted inappropriately.
In a lengthy Facebook post over the weekend, Franzese came right out and said Phillips “body shamed me and ridiculed me about my sexuality and physically assaulted me” during filming of the aforementioned 2001 movie.
He said that Phillips consistently mocked him in front of others for being bisexual.
“I was scared and closeted and feared for my job,” Franzese wrote, adding:
“It started with a lot of eye rolling whenever we spoke but escalated when we did a cast shoot for the poster.
“As we were shooting she kept loudly saying ‘Are you gay?!’ and laughing while the producers and photographer did nothing to stop her.”
Franzese went on to castigate Phillips for giving him a hard time during a shirtless scene, which he admits was “an extremely vulnerable moment for me.”
It should perhaps be noted that Phillips is married to Danny Masterson, who faces rape accusations of his own.
In response to all Franzese wrote on Facebook about her, Phillips has admitted she mistreated her former co-star back in the day.
She confessed as much in a message to TMZ.
“I want to write to address what Daniel has said, Phillips said to TMZ, continuing:
“I don’t remember that time well, those years are a blur. I was a teenager and reckless in my behavior.
“I know Daniel to be a trustworthy and honest person, and to find out through social media that I was not the friend I thought I was to him made me so sad.”
Better later than never for this sort of mea culpa, right?
Concludes Phillips:
“I am so mortified by this behavior and have contacted Daniel and apologized to him privately.
“I am not and never have been homophobic. I have nothing but love for the LGBTQ community and Daniel.”
In light of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, more and more men and women have come forward with how they were victims of sexual harassment or misconduct.
We’d have to imagine this is what inspired Franzese to write so candidly on Facebook of his interactions with Phillips.
He then Tweeted on Sunday night that he has received and accepted her apology.

Lawrence Phillips Dies; Former NFL Running Back Was 40
Lawrence Phillips – the former NFL running back who played for the Rams, Dolphins, and 49ers during his three years in the league – has passed away at the age of 40.
Phillips was reportedly found dead in his cell at Kern Valley State Prison early Wednesday morning.
An autopsy has yet to be conducted, but it is believed that Phillips took his own life by strangling himself with an article of clothing.
Phillips had been in solitary confinement since April, when he allegedly murdered his cellmate, Damion Soward.
The once-promising athlete had been imprisoned for a number of crimes, including spousal abuse and running over a group of teenagers with his car, when he wrote a troubling letter to his mother just weeks before Soward was found dead:
“I feel myself very close to snapping,” Phillips wrote in March of 2015.
“My anger grows daily as I have become fed up with prison. I feel my anger is near bursting and that will result in my death or the death of someone else.”
Phillips was awaiting trial for the murder at the time of his death.
A two-time national champion at the University of Nebraska, Phillips professional career was cut short by legal and personal troubles off the field.
Sadly, his problems only worsened after he left football.
