A Dog"s Purpose: Alleged Animal Cruelty on Set Spurs Boycott

WARNING: The video featured below features graphic footage.

Especially if you’re an animal lover.

Due to a video shared on TMZ yesterday, a company that specializes in training animals for movies and television is under major fire this week after its handlers were recorded forcing a frightened dog into cold, churning water on the set of this film.

The footage in question depicts a German Shepherd named Hercules being lowered into the water, despite making repeated attempts to climb out and/or get away.

After a man finally forces the canine into the gushing liquid, the dog appears to go under, at which point production staff members yell “CUT!” and handlers scramble to reach Hercules.

Again, consider yourself warned.

But watch the controversial video here:

TMZ alleges that director Lasse Hallström was present for this shooting, although Hallström wrote on Twitter that he was not on set at the time, promising a “thorough investigation” into what happened.

“I have been promised that a thorough investigation into this situation is underway and that any wrongdoing will be reported and punished,” he Tweeted.

A Dog’s Purpose is based on a book by the same name.

It chronicles the journey of a reincarnated pet whose consciousness is transferred to numerous dogs over the years, as he searches for the meaning of his life.

It stars Dennis Quaid, among others, and is scheduled to be released on January 27.

Following the leaking of this footage, however, calls to boycott the movie have come from animal rights group PETA, as well as from users of Twitter and Facebook.

Meanwhile, the IMDB rating for the movie was driven down to the lowest possible score.

Amblin Entertainment, the production company behind the film, has released a statement in defense of the movie, specifically what you see above.

It reads:

“Amblin is confident that great care and concern was shown for the German Shepherd Hercules, as well as for all of the other dogs featured throughout the production of the film.”

The company goes on to say that Hercules had multiple days of rehearsal to become acclimatized to the set, but “on the day of the shoot, [he] did not want to perform the stunt portrayed on the tape so the Amblin production team did not proceed with filming that shot.”

The clip above was filmed in October of 2015.

The representative from the American Humane Association representative who was present during the filming has now been suspended in the wake of this scandal.

You can check out the official A Dog’s Purpose trailer below, with the scene featuring Hercules in the water taking place around the 1:20 mark:

Producer Gavin Polone actually worked on the movie, yet did not hold back in his criticism of this situation.

He told Deadline that it was the movie’s second unit who filmed the scene, of which he wasn’t a part.

But Polone was “horrified” by the footage.

“If I had seen that, I would have stopped it in a minute,” he told Deadline, adding:

“In the time I was on set, I never saw, in any way, the animal handlers stressing out the anima. I know the studio is outraged and investigating this.”

We should hope so.

Adds PETA:

“PETA is calling on dog lovers to boycott the film in order to send the message that dogs and other animals should be treated humanely, not as movie props.”

And here is actor Josh Gad’s statement on the incident.

He voices the dog in the movie:

Rogue One: Star Wars Film Prompts Neo-Nazi Boycott

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is almost unquestionably the most highly-anticipated film of 2016.

And, of course, as with any major Star Wars release, the film became the subject of intense online scrutiny months before its release, thus generating word-of-mouth that usually serves as free advertising for Disney.

Now, however, a week before it hits theaters, Rogue One is at the center of a heated debate that could wind up hurting its box office receipts for the most bizarre reason imaginable.

Past Star Wars controversies have centered around mixed responses to story developments within the franchise, or retroactive changes to the original films.

Sadly, the Rogue One debate has taken a much more sinister tone that says more about our nation’s current political climate than about George Lucas’ film franchise.

On Thursday, the hashtag #DumpStarWars began trending on Twitter, and it quickly became clear to any fan who investigated that this was not the result of some spirited critiques of the series’ creative shortcomings.

While it’s unclear how it originated, the hashtag has proven popular among white nationalists and members of the “alt-right,” both movements that have been tied to the KKK and other hate groups.

The most common complaint is that the film (which the outraged have not yet seen) is “anti-white” and espouses a “feminist agenda,” because the cast is multi-cultural and the film’s main character is a woman.

The baffling outrage began back when the first Rogue One trailer was released online several months ago, with YouTube commenters describing the film as “nothing but a Jew masturbation fantasy of anti-White hate.”

The bigoted movement gained steam back in November, when two of the film’s screenwriters, Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta, pointed out that the Empire has always been an obvious metaphor for Hitler’s regime.

“Please note that the Empire is a white supremacist (human) organization,” Chris Weitz tweeted.

Whitta retweeted the statement, adding:

“Opposed by a multi-cultural group led by brave women.”

Indeed, fantasy and science-fiction films and literature have a long history of advancing (usually left-wing) political causes, but don’t tell that to the chronically butthurt boycotters who are currently stamping their tiny feet and holding their breath til they turn blue all over social media.

Some lowlights (complete with newly-trendy #FakeNews):

“Stop using your multiculturalism anti-American agenda in a science fiction Disney movie. We just want to enjoy a fun movie.”

“Just got a full refund on my Rogue One tickets. Keep your politics out of my galaxy.”

“Star Wars writers rewrote and reshot Rogue One to add in Anti Trump scenes calling him a racist. Disgusting.”

“Rogue One is an anti-Trump propaganda film. BOYCOTT!!! Trump supporters!”

“#DumpStarWars Race baiting will not be tolerated.”

On the sane side, the situation might be best summed up by David Slack, who tweeted:

“If Star Wars — an obvious allegory about Nazism  — feels like an attack on your candidate, the problem isn’t with Star Wars…”

Of course, our favorite #DumpStarWars tweet belongs to the incomparable Patirck Monahan, who writes:

“After the election they changed the title of ROGUE ONE to DONALD TRUMP HAS A TINY WIENER? I’ll be spending my money elsewhere!”

On point as always, @PattyMo.

As for the anticipated impacted on the film’s bottom line – something tells us Disney will be just fine.

Beyonce is Selling "Boycott Beyonce" Shirts

You want to (allegedly) cheat on Beyonce

Go ahead. She’ll skewer you all over her new album and make lots of money in the process.

You want to boycott Beyonce because you think she’s anti-police or something after her headline-making performance at halftime of the Super Bowl this year?

Again, go ahead.

But she’s gonna find a way to make lots of money off that hate as well.

Always in control of her career and everything surrounding it, Beyonce has added a few surprising additions to her official website.

For example, you can now spend $ 45 on a “Boycott Beyonce” shirt.

You can go online to do so or, as this young man has done below, you can also purchase attire of this nature at stops along Beyonce’s “Formation” tour, which kicked off last night in Miami.

You can also buy a “Boycott Beyonce” iPhone case and other items such as what we’ve listed below:

Beyonce, of course, has moved the conversation far away from her controversial halftime show and directed instead in the direction of her marriage.

She dropped the album “Lemonade” over the weekend, including with it a number of lyrics that appear to implicate Jay Z as a cheating husband.

But Beyonce gave her husband a very loving shout-out on the first night of her new tour, telling the crowd toward the end of the show:

“I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband. I love you so much.”

Does this mean everything is all good between Bey and Jay? It does seem that way.

Does that mean Jay never cheated on Bey? That’s not for us to decide.

You may debate that possibility with friends as you click through the following amazing GIFs of Beyonce:

Kelly Ripa Boycott Angers Live! Crew: Will It Cost Jobs?

Things are getting very ugly over at ABC.

As most of the free world knows by now, Michael Strahan announced his imminent departure from Live! on Tuesday, explaining that he’s headed over to Good Morning America on a full-time basis in September.

But he and the network announced this career move to Kelly Ripa right around the same time as they told the rest of the world, enraging the long-time co-host.

She felt disrespected by the timing.

Fast forward to Wednesday morning and… wait… that’s not Kelly Ripa sitting in the chair alongside Strahan:

Nope, Ripa took the day off, leaving Strahan to awkwardly explain his move alongside guest host Ana Gasteyer.

Ripa is not expected back on the show until some time next week, either, as she’s either taking a vacation with her family or going through with a boycott, depending on who you ask.

Why is Ripa’s reaction upsetting many members of the Live! crew?

Even the ones who agree she was mistreated by ABC and Strahan?

Because the network is considering the addition of a third hour to Good Morning America, either moving Live! to a later timeslot or axing it altogether.

Certain employees are therefore concerned about their future – and, according to TMZ insiders, are afraid that Ripa’s absence will damage the show, placing it in an even more precious position with ABC.

If Live! were to get canceled, of course, these people would lose their jobs.

Overall, crew members like Kelly, but they believe she is throwing a “tantrum” and they don’t want to see their jobs affected by her drama.

We can sort of see that, but we disagree on the supposed damage Kelly’s absence is doing to the program.

Can you imagine the ratings that Live! will garner on the day she returns?!?

As for who might replace Strahan? We can scratch one name off the list.

It doesn’t sound like Regis Philbin wants his old job back.

“She’s got a bunch of people that she likes,” Regis told TMZ this week.

“Whoever it is, God bless them. Regis has had enough. Twenty-eight years there, 25 before in Hollywood before I came here. I’m done!”

Donald Trump to Boycott Republican Debate, Is Scared of Megyn Kelly

Donald Trump is a man of his word.

Those words may be racist, sexist and hollow, but hey. He’s still a man of them.

Following his memorable clash with Fox News host Megyn Kelly during an August debate, Trump Tweeted this week that he would boycott the Republican debate on Thursday if Kelly was one of the moderators.

The network has confirmed that Kelly will be one of the moderators…

… and Trump has responded by standing by his boycott.

On Tuesday evening, the GOP front-runner’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, announced that her client “will not be participating in the Fox News debate on Thursday.”

And it’s all because Trump has beef with one of Fox’s most recognizable and respected faces.

The billionaire businessman’s problems with Kelly stem from her asking him during the August debate about how he’s referred in the past to women he doesn’t like as “fat pigs” and “slobs.”

Trump took offense to this line of questioning and went on a media blitz in the days that followed, slamming Kelly as a “lightweight,” as a bimbo and implying she was on her period during the debate.

Really, Trump said this.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump told supporters on social media that having Kelly as a moderator was a “pathetic attempt by @foxnews to try and build up ratings for the #GOPDebate. Without me they’d have no ratings!”

He also shared a video on his Instagram account stating:

“Megyn Kelly is really biased against me. She knows that. I know that. Everybody knows that. Do you think she can really be fair at a debate?”

Kelly has stood by her questions for Trump from August and is yet to commend on The Donald’s debate withdrawal.

The question is whether or not Fox News will bring it up at the debate itself.

Donald Trump Ponders Starbucks Boycott, is on Team Christmas

Presidential candidates are tackling the tough issues this week.

Take Jeb Bush, who said in a recent interview that he would kill baby Hitler if given the chance.

And now take Donald Trump (PLEASE!).

The top contender for the Republican nomination spoke to a crowd in Springfield, Illinois on Monday, touching on the debate surrounding Starbucks, which has chosen to make its holiday-themed coffee cups simply red this season.

The lack of Christmas decorations on these cups has caused some to believe that Starbucks hates Jesus.

Where does Trump stand on the giant scandal?

“I have one of the most successful Starbucks, in Trump Tower. Maybe we should boycott Starbucks? I don’t know,” Trump said, adding that he won’t be resigning his lease with the company due to this debacle.

And tossing in a promise to all who feel passionately about this issue:

“If I become president, we’re all going to be saying Merry Christmas again, that I can tell you. That I can tell you.”

It’s unclear, of course, how Trump will enforce this rule.

Will he build a wall around all who refuse to utter those two magical words?

More importantly, where does Trump stand on the topic of ending baby Hitler’s life?

We can only hope (nay… pray!) that these are two of the questions that are posed to the candidate at tonight’s Presidential debate.

Quentin Tarantino: Police Union Calls For Boycott of Director"s Films

Quentin Tarantino has been at the center of a number of controversies over the years, but most of them have involved the intensely graphic violence in his uniquely stylized films.

In real life, however, Tarantino has gone on record as saying that he “abhors” violence, and he put his money where his mouth is over the weekend by taking part in a RiseUp rally to protest recent incidents of police brutality.

Now, ironically, Tarantino’s call for peace has ignited the biggest controversy of his career.

“I’m a human being with a conscience,” Tarantino told a reporter at the rally. “When I see murders, I do not stand by…I have to call a murder a murder, and I have to call the murderers the murderers.”

Not surprisingly, some police officers have taken issue with Tarantino’s statement.

“It’s no surprise that someone who makes a living glorifying crime and violence is a cop-hater, too,” Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said in a statement.

“The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls ‘murderers’ aren’t living in one of his depraved big screen fantasies – they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem.”

Lynch went on to say that New York residents should “send a message” by boycotting Tarantino’s films, particularly his upcoming Western The Hateful Eight, which is set for release in December.

Tarantino has yet to respond to the criticism, but we’re guessing he’s preparing a lengthy, wildly articulate, hyper-referential statement at this very moment.

Donald Trump to Boycott Fox News Over "Unfair" Treatment

Here is something we never thought we’d see:

The leading Republican nominee for President issuing a personal boycott against Fox News.

Then again, we never thought that leading Republican nominee for President would be Donald Trump, either.

But the real estate mogul announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he has no plans to sit down for any interviews with cable’s top news network any time soon.

“.@FoxNews has been treating me very unfairly & I have therefore decided that I won’t be doing any more Fox shows for the foreseeable future,” Trump wrote, sounding more like a third grader than a serious politician.

Trump’s problems with Fox News began at the first Republican debate in August.

He went off on moderator Megyn Kelly immediately after it aired because she pressed Trump on his past treatment of women.

He referred to Kelly as a bimbo and, in an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon, Trump implied strongly that Kelly may have been on her period.

Then, this week, Trump took to Twitter to declare that Kelly was “highly overrated” and also said that Bill O’Reilly features “the same old Trump haters” on The O’Reilly Factor all the time.

In response to Trump’s incessant denouncing of Fox programs, the network released a statement to Entertainment Weekly focused on how the press gives Trump the attention he wants rather than focusing on his actual words and actions.

“At 11:45 a.m. [Wednesday], we canceled Donald Trump’s scheduled appearance on The O’Reilly Factor on Thursday, which resulted in Mr. Trump’s subsequent tweet about his ‘boycott’ of Fox News,” the statement reads.

“The press predictably jumped to cover his tweet, creating yet another distraction from any real issues that Mr. Trump might be questioned about. When coverage doesn’t go his way, he engages in personal attacks on our anchors and hosts, which has grown stale and tiresome.

“He doesn’t seem to grasp that candidates telling journalists what to ask is not how the media works in this country.”

Did we mention that Donald Trump is still the leading Republican nominee for President?

Oh, we did? Okay. Sorry. It’s still sinking in over here.
