TMZ"s 2018 Halloween Costumes Kill It with Dynamic Duos

19 Famously Stupid Halloween Costumes

Halloween is a time for three things:

  1. For kids to dress in some kind of adorable outfit.

  2. For women to turn the most benign of costumes into the skankiest of costumes.

  3. For celebrities to cross certain lines with their controversial costume ideas.

With the third point in mind, we present 14 especially scandalous celebrity Halloween costumes over recent years:

1. Tomi Lahren as…The Flag?

Tomi Lahren thinks she’s being all Patriotic with this photo. But she’s really in violation of the flag code.

2. Snooki as a Missing Child

Snooki as a missing child

It may sort of seem like a silly concept, but milk cartons are actually used sometimes to alert people to missing children. Not exactly something one should mock, Snooki.

3. Julianne Hough as Crazy Eyes

Julianne Hough going as a character from Orange is the New Black was a funny idea. She just should have avoided the whole blackface thing.

4. Chris Brown as a Terrorist

Chris Brown went as a member of the Taliban in 2012. We were impressed he managed to dress up as the one type of person more hated than he is.

5. Bill Maher as Steve Irwin

In 2006, mere months after the death of Steve Irwin, Bill Maher dressed as a “dead” version of the crocodile hunter. His outfit included a bloody stinger stinking out of his chest.

6. Adrianne Curry as Amy Winehouse

Paola Mayfield & Russ Mayfield: SLAMMED for Controversial Costumes!

Paola and Russ Mayfield are a 90 Day Fiance couple that keeps on going. They have their controversies, sure, but they love each other and stay together.

Usually, when it comes to Paola and Russ, any disagreements see fans taking sides. Some say that Russ is too jealous or controlling, others say that Paola should quit modeling. That sort of thing.

This time, these two have stirred up a very different sort of controversy.

Paola Mayfield and Russ are an attractive couple.

But are their Halloween costumes problematic and offensive?

The short answer is: yes.

That doesn’t mean that we aren’t still huge Paola fans. In fact, we were rooting for Paola to win Maxim‘s contest, which could be an amazing boost to her modeling career.

But dressing as Native Americans for Halloween is a big no-no. It’s just below blackface and Nazi symbols on the list of what to never, ever wear.

Why? Because of America’s history of genocide against Native Americans, basically. Native Americans are still heavily marginalized, but white Americans love to adopt their symbols as their own.

A general guide to life is: If a marginalized person tells you that what you’re doing is kinda screwed up, don’t get defensive. Just ask how you can change.

Anyway, apparently none of this crossed Russ and Paola’s minds as they donned their couples costumes and got into double trouble.

Paola shared the photos on Instagram, and the backlash in the comments was immediate:

One comment read:

“Not a fan of this costume at all! disgusting. Next year go as ketchup and mustard. Leave the traditional wear to the people that actually!!!! wear it for their cultures! Sickening people still think this is okay. Not a fan of miss @paola_mayfield so much anymore. #dobetter”

We don’t know that one needs to stop being her fan, but that’s every individual’s choice.

Here are some other comments:

“Ummm, cultural appropriation much?”

“Agree! It is disrespectful!! I am disappointed again!!”

“It’s not an issue about sensitivity. It’s an issue of DISRESPECT of a people/culture as well as an APPROPRIATION by the dominant culture who has sought out to eliminate Native American people since the 1400s.”

“Oh honey. No.”

“Wtf?!? Not ok!!!!”

“Tasteless, Native regalia is not a Halloween costume.”

As you can see, some of those commenters tried to explain. Others just expressed their disgust.

A few thought to differentiate between Paola and Russ.

“Ah yes a white guy in native headdress and an over sexualized Native American woman…this is not okay.”

One repeated a helpful motto:

“Its a Culture NOT A COSTUME!!”

Oh, and some of the commenters were Nativa Americans, for whom this issue hits very close to home.

“My culture is not your costume @paola_mayfield .. this is so sad and offensive.”

As you can imagine, there were opposing opinions presented, too.

These were folks from the “who cares if it’s bad, I don’t want to change my behavior or think about how my actions impact others” camp.

And, just like during the 2016 election, these people were out in force.

“You guys look great! Too bad the world is so sensitive these days that even halloween costumes r censored!”

Costumes aren’t censored, that’s not what that word means. But people can and should make wise choices about what they wear.

“And here come the PC offended ….”

People love to misuse “politically correct,” which is a largely meaningless term that’s usually used by people who just aren’t interested in being better people.

“Halloween isn’t about representing a cultures struggle it’s about having fun! People are so worried about hurting feelings that nothing is allowed anymore.”

That commenter, who apparently forgets that Native Americans exist and might have less fun in the face of such a mocking costume, continued.

“I’m from Canada … and there are still indigenous costumes sold and worn. “I think they have beautiful traditional costume and choosing to dress up in one is not disrespectful in anyway. What are people ‘allowed’ to dress up as now a days. Geez! Everything will offend someone.”

It’s worth noting that there are literally thousands of Native American women missing in Canada without any explanation. Our polite neighbors to the north aren’t a better authority on how to treat indigenous folks.

Another commenter added hyperbole:

“People read into way to much now if someone wears a feather in their hat it’s called discrimination I could add so many other examples but it would take me forever get over it people look at it as fun dressing up just love live enjoy #tomuch hate in this world”

There are basically endless costume choices. Don’t dress as an outfit to either ridicule or sexualize a marginalized person. There aren’t many rules, but that’s one of them, and it’s super easy to follow.

“Get over it. Everything has to be an upset and about race these days. Stop being so up tight and sensitive. It’s not a big deal. There are better things to be up in arms about…”

If there’s one thing that minority groups like Native Americans love to hear, it’s “get over it.” That’s right up there with “it’s just a little genocide.”

In case you’re concerned about the state of the world (which, actually, you should be) because these comments are so polarized, know that some commenters understand nuance.

“She probably doesn’t know. She’s from a different culture.”

And that, we think, might be the crux of it.

Russ wasn’t able to predict the backlash, we suppose, because he’s a conservative white guy from Oklahoma.

That’s not an excuse, mind you.

Paola, however, is Columbian. She may have somewhat fair skin, but she is from Central America. She’s not quite.

While that doesn’t make Paola part of any Plains Native American ethnic groups and doesn’t fully excuse the costume, it’s something to keep in mind.

More to the point, as one of the commenters stated, Paola is still adapting to American culture and was almost certainly not aware that this costume would invite backlash.

We can afford to be forgiving, folks.

An apology — especially from Russ — would be appropriate, though.

Khloe Kardashian & Tristan Thompson Reveal EPIC Game of Thrones Costumes!

Folks, you may not want to hear this, but please listen:

Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson pulled off a pair of pretty epic couples costumes.

The couple and soon-to-be parents aren’t just winning Halloween — they’re winning Game of Thrones.

Khloe Kardashian and her boyfriend (and baby daddy!) Tristan Thompson are known for, you know, reality stardom and for sportsball, respectively.

While it’s no surprise that they’d try out couples costumes, you don’t really expect to be blown away.

But we’re genuinely impressed. No joke.

Khloe and Tristan are serving up some Game of Thrones looks as one of the show’s most iconic couples.

Not quite caught up on this season of Game of Thrones? Still slogging through the quagmire of season 5 and too embarrassed to admit it to your friends?

Don’t worry, folks.

Khloe and Tristan’s costumes harken all the way back to the very first season.

Khloe Kardashian dressed as Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, … and so on, and so on.

It’s not really a surprise to see Khloe dress as the world’s beloved Khaleesi. She’s a very popular character.

Also, how many chances does Khloe get to dress as someone else whose name or title stars with a “Kh,” we wonder?

Not many.

(Maybe next Halloween she’ll dress as khyber crystals, but we somehow doubt that she’s, uh, that deep into Star Wars lore. Maybe we’re wrong and totally underestimating Khloe)

What did surprise us about Khloe’s choice, though, was how well-executed her costume was.

You probably don’t normally think of Khloe looking much like Daenerys, but she really made it work.

Part of the key to Khloe’s success was being coupled up with Tristan and his look.

Yes, Tristan Thompson dressed as Khal Drogo.

The famous Jason Momoa character didn’t survive to the end of Game of Thrones‘ first season (uh, spoiler alert), but remains a powerful fixture in Daenerys’ backstory.

Also, like all Jason Momoa characters, he had a powerful screen presence.

Daenerys and Khal Drogo were what you’d call a problematic pairing, but they grew to truly love and understand each other before Khal Drogo’s death.

Their height difference was very pronounced, which really helps Tristan and Khloe pull off this pair of epic couples costumes.

Because just look at them:

Yes, that’s the two of them with their prize.

We should note that Khloe is dressed in a much more recent outfit of Daenerys’ … and we don’t think that this was an oversight.

Do you know we don’t see?

Khloe Kardashian’s baby bump.

Daenerys’ more recent outfits and their furs can really go a long way towards concealing a pregnancy.

If you’re wondering why Khloe and Tristan didn’t go as Daenerys and Jon Snow, a much more up-to-date couple, our guess is that it might have something to do with Tristan Thompson being really well-suited for a Khal Drogo look.

(Not that he couldn’t pull off Jon Snow)

Also, maybe Khloe’s a little squicked by the incest of it all. Even though it’s, you know, fictional.

To our horror, we know that Rob Kardashian doesn’t feel the same way.

Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams: Dating! See Their Stranger Things Costumes!

Early this year, Sarah Hyland and Dominic Sherwood celebrated their second anniversary as a couple. But, like all relationships, it did not last forever.

As it turns out, the Modern Family actress has found a new man, and he’s also from television. Specifically, from The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise: Wells Adams.

And they are already rocking some pretty epic couples’ costumes, Stranger Things style.

We’re glad that Sarah Hyland had such a lengthy and presumably healthy relationship with Dominic Sherwood of Shadowhunters.

(Relationships don’t always end in a big blow-up — sometimes people just grow apart, folks)

After her absolutely horrific relationship with Matt Pokop ended with a three-year restraining order against him after he’d allegedly been violently abusive, she deserved good things.

And she still does.

Wells Adams is not dating Danielle Maltby, even though sparks flew between the two of them while Wells was tending bar on Bachelor in Paradise.

(Seriously, those two were acting like main characters in a romance film — but he’s clearly moved on)

Not only are Wells Adams and Sarah Hyland dating, but they are rocking some absolutely incredible costumes for Halloween.

If you don’t watch Stranger Things, Wells Adams is dressed as Eleven.

Sarah Hyland is not dressed as a Pokemon master but, rather, as Dustin.

Wells Adams had recently admitted on his podcast with Brandi Cyrus that he had been spending a lot of time with a special someone in L.A.

Clearly, Sarah Hyland fits the bill.

Us Weekly‘s source reveals that Sarah and Wells have been seeing each other for months.

It seems that they only decided to take things public for Halloween.

And looking at their costumes, how could you blame them?

Squad costume goals, right?

Wells and Sarah had been a little flirty over social media, which caused fans to first suspect that they might be an item.

Just little in-jokes, complete with @-ing each other.

But until we saw them all Instagram-official like this, we knew that they might have just been friends.

(Yes, men and women can absolutely be friends, folks — even celebrities)

We’re glad that they decided to go public so that we can all share in their joy (and appreciate their costumes)

Also, clearly these guys are having fun, because they shared one of their whackier photos.

(We’ll admit to not being completely caught up on Stranger Things yet, but … we don’t think that Wells’ Eleven is particularly in-character)

For anyone worried about their age differences, remember that Sarah Hyland just looks young.

She’s 26 years old.

And while plenty of the guys in the Bachelor franchise tend to be a bit on the older side, Wells Adams isn’t too old at 33, right?

That’s only a 7 year age difference and they’re both adults.

We guess that this means no more Bachelor shows for Wells Adams, since those shows are usually just for the single folks.

But he’s dating the super hot Sarah Hyland.

That sounds like a more than fair trade to us.

Hilary Duff and Jason Walsh SLAMMED for Offensive Halloween Costumes!

OK, so this is kind of a “good news, bad news” situation.

The good news: Hilary Duff and her personal trainer/boyfriend, Jason Walsh, made their very first public appearance last night!

The bad news: the appearance was at a Halloween party and their costumes were, to many, many people, horrifically offensive and wrong.

Heaven help us all.

So that’s Hilary dressed up as a sexy pilgrim and Jason dressed up as an angry Native American.

And to say that people didn’t like the costumes would pretty much be the understatement of the year.

One person advised Hilary that “When you’re thinking of what you should be for Halloween the answer should never be #CulturalAppropriation. That was terrible.”

“In 2016,” another wrote, “you and your boyfriend don’t know how inappropriate it is to dress up that way? I guess it’s always fun to show how racist you are.”

One fan pointed out that “Your boyfriend’s Native ‘costume’ is racist. Learn your history, Native Americans have endured genocide and broken treaties and still face racism every day.”

“This costume is not ok. The pilgrims came over and massacred an entire population of native people. This costume is ignorant and not appropriate.”

“How did either of you think wearing that was appropriate? there’s new excuse to remain ignorant about this, so you both had to know how incredible offensive it would be. You just DGAF, I guess. I’m just so disgusted.”

“Girl … this was ignorance, plain and simple.”

And, well, these people aren’t wrong.

People are also pointing out that this is an incredibly insensitive time to put on these atrocious costumes, considering the ongoing protests concerning the Dakota Access Pipeline.

“Horrible choice, especially with all that is going on,” one follower told her, adding a “No DAPL” hashtag.

Still others took issue with this photo that Hilary shared on Instagram:

“Sooooo the fake gun for my pilgrim costume came,” she captioned it. “Don’t think it’s quite big enough.”

Apparently some people think that guns should have no part at all in Halloween costumes, no matter how fake or small they may be.

“Fake GUN?!” someone wrote. “U shouldn’t include GUNS with ur costume even if it’s FAKE.”

Hilary just can’t win for losing, huh?
