Dove Apologizes for Most Ridiculously Racist Ad Ever

Dove is here to say its sorry.

The beauty company came under heavy fire late last week after for posting a Facebook ad in which a “dirty” African-American woman uses a bottle of Dove body wash to transform into a “clean” white woman.

This is very strongly the implication, at least.

dove bottles

In a third image from the ad, the white woman removes her shirt (and skin, we guess) to become an Asian woman.

As you might imagine, more than a small handful of Internet users took issue with this advertisement and its theme.

“This is gross. You think people of color can just wash away their melanin and become white? What were you going for, exactly? Your creative director should be fired,” wrote Angela Reinders on Facebook.

As screen shots of the ad made their way around social media, other confused and angry individuals chimed in.

“Are you joining the Trump administration now? WTF is that ad even supposed to mean?” Sonia Gupta Tweeted at the company.

On Saturday, Dove – which is owned by Dutch-British transnational consumer goods company Unilever – issued an apology on its Twitter account for the advertisement.

The mea culpa reads as follows:

“An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused.”

The company shared a similar message on Facebook:

“Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused.

“The feedback that has been shared is important to us and we’ll use it to guide us in the future.

It’s always confounding when this sort of thing happens because such an ad must have been cleared by a lot of people.

It’s not as if this can be written off by a single bone-headed decision.

dove tweet

This is not the first time Dove has received major race-related backlash for a questionable ad, either.

In 2011, a controversial poster depicted three women standing in front of a wall designated in “before” and “after.”

The “before” woman had dark skin… the woman in between had medium-toned skin … and the woman in front of the “after” photograph was white.

In this case, Dove sought to clarify, not apologize.

“All three women are intended to demonstrate the ‘after’ product benefit. We do not condone any activity or imagery that intentionally insults any audience,” a company statement read at the time.

before/after

But the damage has maybe already been done.

“Okay, Dove… One racist ad makes you suspect. Two racist ads makes you kinda guilty,” wrote a Twitter user yesterday, citing each of these ads from the last few years.

Others, meanwhile, remained aghast at the brand’s original intention with last week’s ad, as one person wondered:

“What exactly were yall going for?

“What was the mark . . . I mean anyone with eyes can see how offensive this is. Not one person on your staff objected to this? Wow. Will not be buying your products anymore.”

What do you think of this scandal?

Does Dove deserve all the criticism it is receiving? Will you continue to use their products?

Or is this much ado over not very much?

Maksim Chmerkovskiy Apologizes to Vanessa Lachey, Tries to Squash Beef Rumors

Amidst rumors that he and Dancing with the Stars partner Vanessa Lachey don’t exactly get along, Maksim Chmerkovskiy has come out and attempted to quiet all such chatter.

He’s issued a direct apology to the television personality.

“As you are all aware, I had to leave the show last week to take care of some personal issues,” Chmerkovskiy Tweeted on Wednesday, adding:

“I take full responsibility for my actions and want to apologize to my partner Vanessa.

“We are both looking forward to dancing for our fans next week!”

To open the ABC broadcast on Monday night, co-host Erin Andrews told viewers that the international stud muffin was absent due to “personal issues” and Lachey would be dancing with Alan Bersten instead.

No other information was given at the time.

But the timing was questionable because Chmerkovskiy essentially no-showed an episode just as the Internet was blowing up with rumors of a rivalry between himself and his partner.

“There is a lot of fighting going on behind the scenes,” a source told Us Weekly this week, explaining a bit more in detail:

“Their personalities are very similar so they disagree about everything. They refuse to give into one another…

“They’re playing nice for the cameras, but both are miserable paired with each other.”

This alleged dispute hasn’t affected the tandem on screen, however.

If there is a beef, it’s been put aside during the actual program, as Chmerkovskiy and Lachey have sat atop the leaderboard all season long.

And they’ll be back at it again in just a few days.

“New week! VEEEEERY excited for @DancingABC new dance studio and new dance with @Vanessa Lachey! Can’t wait to be back at the Ballroom!” Chmerkovskiy also Tweeted yesterday.

Fellow professional Lindsay Arnold, meanwhile, has confirmed to People Magazine that she saw Maks and Vanessa in the studio this week.

Yes, together.

Elsewhere, actress Sasha Pieterse (who is competing on Season 25) also spoke to People and basically said if there’s tension between Chmerkovskiy and Lachey… well… she hasn’t seen it.

With Vanessa’s husband (Nick Lachey) and Maksim’s wife (Peta Murgatroyd) also paired up this fall, the former Pretty Little Liars star says everyone is having a blast.

“Honestly, they’re awesome, I love them. Nick and Vanessa are awesome so are Peta and Maks. They’re such a fun partnership,” said Pieterse, who is still alive with partner Gleb Savchenko.

In the end, of course, does it really matter if Chmerkovskiy and Lachey get along?

If anything, it’s almost more interesting that they may detest each other personally, yet are still able to perform well professionally.

All we know for sure is that we’ll be tuning in next week to see if we can spot any issues at all between these two while they once again try to impress the judges and the viewers at home.

Kevin Hart Apologizes to Wife: OK, Maybe I Did Cheat ...

Well, this is disappointing …

You know how, over the summer, there were a whole bunch of rumors that Kevin Hart cheated on his wife, Eniko Parrish?

First, in July, a video was released that showed Kevin sitting in a car with a young woman, and people immediately assumed that something scandalous was taking place, despite the fact that in the video, nothing inappropriate ever happened.

He responded with a meme that read “At the end of the day you just gotta laugh at the BS,” and for the moment, that was that.

Then, last month, his wife Eniko made a mushy Instagram post that seemed to confirm rumors that he’d started hooking up with her while still married to his previous wife, Torrei Hart.

In the post, Eniko thanked Kevin for “8 years together,” apparently failing to recall that he and Torrei had only been divorced for six years.

When people called out that sketchy math in the comments, Eniko got defensive, explaining that “Their marriage was broken way before I came into the picture.”

“They were separated living in separate homes. I was never a secret.”

Torrei responded — all of this went down in the Instagram comments, remember — by complaining that they’d all “made successful strides to become a loving co parenting family, but you have now left it open for my character to be questioned.”

“You, Kevin, and I know the truth. Either respond truthfully or don’t respond at all.”

Eniko then disabled the comments for her post, and once again, Kevin made a post of his own to tell everyone how he was just laughing everything off.

He asked why writing a book about his life and doing multiple stand-up specials wasn’t enough to stop rumors and comments — but he never addressed the actual issue.

This little scandal was unrelated to the first, but still, bad timing, right?

Taking both stories into consideration, this has been the summer of “Kevin Hart: Cheater or Nah?”

And now, in a shocking new video he made and posted to Instagram, it looks like he may, in fact, be a cheater.

The video was made as an apology to his wife and children for a mistake he made — he didn’t describe the mistake in detail, but it’s pretty easy to read between the lines here.

“I’m at a place in my life where I feel like I feel like I have a target on my back,” he explained. “And because of that, I should make smart decisions.”

“And recently, I didn’t.”

Uh oh …

“You know, I’m not perfect,” he continued. “I’m not going to sit up here and say that I am or claim to be in any way, shape, or form.”

“And I made a bad error in judgment and I put myself in a bad environment where only bad things can happen and they did.”

“And in doing that, I know that I’m going to hurt the people closest to me, who I’ve talked to and apologized to, that would be my wife and my kids.”

Kevin added that “it’s a sh-tty moment. It’s a sh-tty moment when you know you’re wrong and there’s no excuses for your wrong behavior.”

“At the end of the day, man, I just simply gotta do better.”

But, and here’s where it gets extra interesting, he said that “I’m also not going to allow a person to have financial gain off of my mistakes and in this particular situation, that was what was attempted.”

“I said I’d rather fess up to my mistakes.”

So what happened?

A new report from TMZ explains that an unnamed woman has certain damning video clips of herself with Kevin … and she’s been demanding money from him in exchange for keeping those videos to herself.

One of the clips features the woman with Kevin in a club, and they’re said to look pretty intimate with each other.

Another doesn’t feature any faces, but it does show a bed, and you can apparently hear some creaking and some possible sex noises.

Yet another clip shows two people in a bedroom, and the people who’ve seen the footage say that one of those people does kind of look like him.

One of Kevin’s reps stated that “Someone tried to set Kevin up in a failed extortion attempt. As law enforcement is involved, we cannot comment further as it could affect the investigation.”

So it seems like Kevin made the public apology video before anyone else could get this story out.

What a mess …

Louise Linton Apologizes For Being Awful, Remains Adorably Out of Touch

If you’re like most Americans, you never heard the name Louise Linton before yesterday.

Just 48 hours ago the Scottish actress’ claims to fame were appearing in the 2012 remake of the horror film Cabin Fever and marrying US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin both revolting undertakings that no doubt tested the limits of Ms. Linton’s gag reflex.

Now, however, Louise has finally found the fame she’s spent her adult life in search of.

Unfortunately, it’s left her frantically switching her social media accounts to “private” like Marie Antoinette boarding up the windows at Versailles.

In case you missed Louise’s “let them eat cake” moment, here’s what happened:

Linton and her husband … recently traveled to Kentucky in a private jet in order to discuss tax reform with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

What former former Charlie Sheen co-starrer Louise brought to the table is anyone’s guess, but hey, this is the administration in which former handbag designers are shaping foreign policy, so anything goes.

Anyway, Woman of the People Louise posted a photo of herself arriving in Kentucky (a state in which 1 in 5 people live below the poverty line) that rubbed some folks the the wrong way.

The pic showed Linton stepping off a government plane looking like she’d been outfitted for a different kind of runway.

To ensure none of the poors got the wrong impression that she’s flying around in Target pajama pants and a neck pillow from Hudson News, Linton tagged the many high-end designers responsible for her outfit.

The hashtag “#HermesScarf” went viral shortly thereafter, but not because Twitter was so impressed by Louise’s fashion sense.

To drive home the point that she’s some sort of cartoon bad guy rich person, a la Monty Burns or Cruella De Ville, Linton attacked an Oregon mother of three who dared to suggest that her post was in poor taste.

“Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country?” Linton wrote, in an emoji-laden screed.

“I’m pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day ‘trip’ than you did. Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you’d be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours.”

She went on to slam Miller for being “adorably out of touch,” before sarcastically quipping, “Your kids look very cute. Your life looks cute.”

After what we imagine was a hilariously WTF?! reaction from her husband (who, as the producer of the Entourage movie, is a man who knows good taste), Louise issues a half-assed apology … through her publicist:

“I apologize for my post on social media yesterday as well as my response. It was inappropriate and highly insensitive,” read a statement issued by Linton’s handlers.

As you can see, the apology is boring, boilerplate, and almost certainly not penned by Louise hereself.

Really, the only reason we’re reporting on it at all is so that we can bring you the exciting news that Louise literally played Marie Antoinette in an episode of CSI: NY!

But that wasn’t her only gloriously apt film role.

Louise also had a few lines on the now-defunct of Cold Case.

She played a woman named Louise in an episode titled WASP!

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

Well, you can … but who would want to?

Oh, do yourself a favor and google Louise’s memoir – a harrowing account of her post-boarding school gap year living amongst black people.

It’s the “feel awful about the world we live” in book of the year!

Kim Kardashian Apologizes: I Feel So Naive for Defending Jeffree Star!

The thing about making most mistakes is that they"re learning opportunities. That sounds corny as hell, but it"s kinda true.

Kim Kardashian defending Jeffree Star"s history of racism was for sure a mistake, and she"s been dragged on it all day long on Twitter.

But it looks like she actually listened to the backlash instead of "tuning out the haters," because Kim"s put out a new video today where she apologizes for the whole thing. And you can watch that, below.

Kim kardashian selfie drama

Okay, so, yesterday Kim Kardashian took to Snapchat to try to shut down her fans and followers from slamming Jeffree Star.

If they"d been reading him for filth over his hair or whatever, that would have been fine.

(Good, even — one could argue that celebrities who don"t say anything when they see their fans bullying someone are complicit in the bullying)

But though they were responding to Jeffree Star insulting Kim Kardashian"s latest makeup swatches (he said that they looked like chalk), that wasn"t the subject on which they were dragging the famous model and makeup artist.

No, they were going after him like a nest of enraged hornets because of Jeffree Star"s history of racism.

See, video of Jeffree Star resurfaced earlier this summer.

In it, Jeffree Star is saying some truly awful, vile things that should never be repeated.

It"s mostly a lot of the n-word, folks.

The video is from years and years ago, and Jeffree Star posted a lengthy and seemingly earnest apology.

But … apologizing doesn"t magically make the crappy stuff that you"ve done go away.\

Now, people can accidentally do or say racist things — like repeating a bad joke, or adopting a hairstyle that really doesn"t belong to their culture and has gotten people of color mocked and fired — without realizing that they shouldn"t.

Ignorance isn"t an excuse, but it happens.

You grow up and you change, hopefully.

But direct, unbridled racism? That"s not easy to forget.

Or to forgive.

And Kim was absolutely blasted on Twitter for suggesting that people should "get over" Jeffree"s troublesome history.\

First of all, because Kim is white and she has zero rights to tell people of color to "get over" racism.

Second of all, because Kim"s husband and children are black and, you know, you have to wonder if she"d tell North or Saint that.

As it turns out, Kim didn"t know the whole story, as she admits in her apology video below.

"I really wanted to apologize to you guys and my fans for defending a situation yesterday that I really didn"t know enough about."

Yep.

Do your research before you assert something on Snapchat, folks.

Her full apology, during which she admits to having been mistaken and to feeling "really naive," is exactly the right thing to say under the circumstances.

A lot of celebrities enjoy living in a bubble, but really getting to know what people say to and about you on social media can pay off, folks.

Walmart Apologizes for "Back to School" Gun Display

You know, people joke about back-to-school supplies every year. Usually, the joke “back-to-school” item is some sort of alcoholic beverage. (And sometimes it’s not a joke)

But we think that we’ve now seen the absolute worst, most tasteless back-to-school advertisement that the world has to offer.

As if Walmart needed more bad publicity, after one of their online product descriptions included the n-word.

So, a lot of seasonal displays in stores aren’t for holidays.

Back-to-school shopping is huge.

Students need to be prepared for the new school year, and have often already been given lists by teachers on what sorts of materials they’ll need and in what quantities.

Sometimes those lists will include a request for extra supplies for the classroom, like tissue boxes or extra staples.

It’s important because extra supplies can benefit classrooms and teachers in what are often underfunded school districts.

It can be fun for students, because who doesn’t like having a new set of pens and an abundance of fresh notebooks and folders?

One particular Walmart appeared to have a very unorthodox idea of what constitutes “back to school shopping” … and nobody was laughing.

A display advertising guns (which, yes, you can just buy at a Walmart) presented them as back-to-school items.

And it was made even worse by this particular line:

“Own the school year like a hero.”

Needless (we hope) to say, this is horrifying.

Not only are guns banned from most campuses for obvious reasons.

But the mass shooting epidemic here in the US has not left schools untouched.

From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook to, unfortunately, countless other schools, school shootings have ended lives and ruined others.

The image of the Walmart display went viral.

People shared it because it was horrifying.

It is very possible that no one was more horrified than Walmart themselves, who tweeted their shock and condemnation of the display and released a statement disavowing it:

“What’s seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores.”

Remember, the higher-ups at Walmart do very little to manage the day-to-day operations within stores.

But obviously someone at that store exercised almost unimaginably poor judgment.

“We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened.”

Walmart’s Charles Crowson told CNN that Walmart is actively trying to locate the store that held this display and ensure that it’s down.

Which means that Walmart cannot currently confirm that the display is no longer up.

We have to imagine, though, that someone at that store scrambled to take it down.

It’s difficult to picture Walmart not firing someone over that.

As a general rule, you never want to be the one who makes the higher ups at your company have to issue apologies.

Walmart is a massive company with approximately one bajillion stores, so the search could take a while.

Especially if the store manager who let this happen feels terrified and feigns ignorance in the hopes that this story will just die down.
