Paul Allen Dies; Microsoft Co-Founder Was 65

Paul Allen, the multi-billionaire who co-founded Microsoft alongside Bill Gates in 1975, died on Monday afternoon at his home in Seattle.

He was 65 years old.

Allen, who was worth around $ 20 billion around the time of his passing, lost his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a disease he announced had returned two weeks ago.

“Some personal news: Recently, I learned the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma I battled in 2009 has returned,” Allen Tweeted on October 1, addingat the time:

“I’ve begun treatment & my doctors are optimistic that I will see a good result. Appreciate the support I’ve received & count on it as I fight this challenge.”

The wildly successful businessman’s Vulcan Inc. confirmed the sad news today, writing on Twitter:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of @PaulGAllen, our founder and noted technologist, philanthropist, community builder, conservationist, musician and supporter of the arts.

All of us who worked with Paul feel an inexpressible loss today.

Allen’s sister, Jody, also released a statement.

She said Paul was “a remarkable individual on every level,” adding in full:

While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much-loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend.

Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern.

For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends.

At this time of loss and grief for us – and so many others – we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day.

Allen and Gates were both college dropouts.

They came up with the idea for Microsoft in Albuquerque, designing software together for the nascient personal computer revolution.

Microsoft moved to Bellevue, Washington in 1979.

He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1983 and resigned shortly thereafter, but still was an active member of the board until the year 2000.

Allen was also a prominent figure in the professional sports world.

He had owned the Seattle Seahawks since 1997 and the Portland Trail Blazers since 1988. He was also the co-owner of the MLS’ Seattle Sounders FC.

Over the years, Allen donated over $ 2 billion to charity.

He was never married and left behind no children.

May Paul Allen rest in peace.

Kate Upton Details Horrifying Accusations Against Guess Cofounder

These days, the world knows who Kate Upton is. She’s beautiful. She was in that commercial for a phone game that looks more interesting than it probably is. And she just got married in November.

Sadly, she also has a #MeToo story, accusing Guess co-founder Paul Marciano of sexual harassment.

Now, Kate Upton is sharing the details of her accusations from her time as a Guess model, early in her career.

Kate Upton dropped her bombshell of a #MeToo story, starting with a single tweet.

“It’s disappointing that such an iconic women’s brand @Guess is still empowering Paul Marciano as their creative director #metoo.”

She followed that up on Instagram, sharing that tweet and adding:

“He shouldn’t be allowed to use his position within the industry to sexually and emotionally harass women. #metoo.”

So, in case it wasn’t immediately clear from her use of the #MeToo hashtag, she’s accusing Paul Marciano of being one of the various sex monsters who uses his power to get away with his misdeeds.

For his part, Paul Marciano denies everything.

“I have never been alone with Kate Upton,” he says, though that doesn’t necessarily mean much on its own in light of Kate’s description that you’ll read below.

“I have never touched her inappropriately. Nor would I ever refer to a Guess model in such a derogatory manner.”

You’ll see what he allegedly said about her below, also.

“I fully support the #metoo movement. At the same time, I will not allow others to defame me and tarnish my reputation.”

Well, at least he’s not using that absurd “has #metoo gone too far” rhetoric that some people keep spouting.

“I have pledged to Guess and its Board of Directors my full support and cooperation with a fair and impartial investigation.”

Photographer Yu Tsai, however, has confirmed Kate Upton’s descriptions of harassment.

Speaking to Time, Kate Upton talks about alleged sexual harassment she faced at the very beginning of her career.

“After the first day of shooting the Guess Lingerie campaign [on July 25, 2010], Paul Marciano said he wanted to meet with me.”

That seems normal. The rest does not.

“As soon as I walked in with photographer Yu Tsai, Paul came straight up to me, forcibly grabbed my breasts and started feeling them — playing with them actually. After I pushed him away, he said, ‘I’m making sure they’re real."”

Needless to say, that is unacceptable. (This is beside the point, but if he couldn’t visually determine if they were real or not, how would that matter for the photoshoot?)

“Despite doing everything I could physically do to avoid his touch throughout the meeting, he continued to touch me in a very dominating and aggressive way, grabbing my thighs, my arms to pull me closer, my shoulders to pull me closer, my neck, my breasts, and smelling me.”

Ewww! And, obviously, horrible.

“He then told Yu Tsai to leave us alone. I was able to send a quick text to Yu Tsai asking him to stay. He did, but that did not stop Paul’s constant grabbing. I was extremely shaken, surprised and scared.”

“At one point he forcibly grabbed the back of my head so that I could not move and started kissing my face and my neck.”

That sounds so gross.

“I remember not wanting to say ‘Get off of me’ because I didn’t want to open my mouth to say anything because I didn’t want him to be able to put his tongue in my mouth.”

A horrifying situation to contemplate. And I’d bet that there are people who read Upton’s words and can relate.

“I had two options: do everything I could to wiggle away and avoid his pursuit, or punch the CEO of Guess. So I decided to just wiggle away.”

She says that Paul Marciano tried to insist that he walk her to her hotel room, but that Yu Tsai stepped in and volunteered to walk her to her room.

Upton says that she was afraid of what Marciano might do if the two of them were truly alone. She also says that he tried again.

“The next Guess shoot I worked on was about a month later. As soon as I went up to my hotel room, Paul started calling me asking to come up and see how my room is.”

That is not as subtle as it must have sounded in his mind.

“I politely declined several times. He continued to insist. He said he was already in the hotel lobby. He even called my room from the hotel lobby desk.”

She says that she finally turned off her phone, locked her door, and went to sleep. Unfortunately, she also says that her denials had immediate consequences.

“The next day, I learned that I had been fired from the shoot. Someone had called my agency to say I had gotten fat and would not be needed on set [that day]. I was devastated, especially because at this point no one from Guess had even seen me.”

That was not, obviously, the end of her career. But Upton says that she felt that, at any given moment, it could be.

“It made me feel that if I cut off communication with him, I wouldn’t be booked again. Paul’s texting increased, telling me how excited he was to see me.”

The content of those text messages was pretty horrifying, too.

“He wanted me to change in front of him so he could see my naked body getting into his clothes. He asked if I thought of him when I was posing sexy on set.”

She also says that Yu Tsai was fired, perhaps in retaliation for shielding her with his presence. Upton says that photographer Ellen von Unwerth also interceded on her behalf to help her avoid being forced into an unwanted dinner.

It seems that her refusing to have dinner with him was the last straw for Marciano.

“After that he was extremely upset. I had a final shoot [in May of 2011], and he was outwardly rude and degrading the entire time.”

That alone would be unprofessional of him and unacceptable.

“He said I was ‘disgusting’ and started telling people how unprofessional I was by spreading rumors that I was drunk on set and partying every night, which of course I wasn’t. I was then told to leave because Paul had said, ‘Get that fat pig off my set."”

Kate Upton would later go on to see fame and success after her Sports Illustrated cover.

She says that Guess asked her back … but that Paul Marciano’s texting her that he would be on set and insisting that she not bring her boyfriend drove her to turn down $ 400,000.

Kate Upton Accuses Guess Co-Founder Paul Marciano of Sexual Misconduct

Kate Upton has accused the man behind fashion brand Guess of treating women in an inappropriate manner.

On Wednesday morning, the world famous model took to Twitter in order to accuse chief creative officer and former co-CEO Paul Marciano of sexual harassment.

Marciano has been a major influence at Guess for years and remains a prominent player in its everyday operations.

Much to the chagrin of Upton, as she writes below:

“It’s disappointing that such an iconic women’s brand @GUESS is still empowering Paul Marciano as their creative director.”

The newlywed ended the tweet with a potentially telling hashtag, implying that she was a victim of Marciano’s unacceptable behavior by Tweeting:

#metoo.

This hashtag, of course, is commonly used these days by women who have been the victims of sexual harassment or misconduct.

While it’s often employed by females in the entertainment industry (after acres Alyssa Milano made it popular once again several months ago), many women around social media in general have also joined the movement.

The impressive viral movement aims to shed light on years and years of abuse, intimidation, harassment and assault that have been covered up by both Hollywood and the media.

Back to Upton, however:

Minutes after sending her initial message, Upton shared the same Tweet on Instagram, along with the caption:

“He shouldn’t be allowed to use his power in the industry to sexually and emotionally harass women #metoo.”

Justin Verlander, the Houston Astros starting pitcher who Upton married in November, also shared his wife’s allegation on Twitter.

ku tweets

Upton is arguably the most famous supermodel in the world.

She became a celebrity spokesmodel for Guess in 2011, following in the footsteps of such major names as the following:

Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford. Most recent faces of Guess include Gigi Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Camila Cabello and Jennifer Lopez.

Marciano, meanwhile, co-founded the fashion company in 1981 and has served as its executive chairman and chief creative officer since August 2015.

He stepped down that year from his position as the brand’s chief executive officer, but, if anything, has been more involved in a daily basis ever since making this transition.

Guess has yet to respond to Upton’s claims.

And Upton has not provided any further detail regarding what Marciano has done to merit said claims.

We’ll update this story as more news when/if it breaks.

Butch Trucks Dies; Allman Brothers Band Co-Founder Was 69

Butch Trucks, one of the co-founding members of beloved group the Allman Brother Band, was found dead on Tuesday.

He was 69 years old.

No cause of death has been determined or made public, but the sad passing was confirmed by Rolling Stone, who spoke with Trucks’ booking agent, Page Stallings.

Butch’s cousin, Lee, also confirmed the unfortunate news on Facebook, writing this morning:

“My cousin Butch Trucks died. Great drummer. Good person.”

Moreover, the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival, where Trucks was scheduled to perform in May, left the following message on its Facebook account about an hour ago:

We are shocked and sad to report that Butch Trucks, one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers, has passed away at the age of 69.

We will repost the official press release when we get it. Sorry to be the bearer of such sad news.

trucks on FB

A native of Florida, Trucks started the Allman Brothers alongside Duane and Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley and Jai Johanny Johanson.

The band struck it big in the early 1970s, gaining a large following as a result of an improvisational style that mixed multiple genres and instruments.

They played hundreds of live dates every year and finally gained a mainstream following in July of 1971 with the release of the live album “At Fillmore East.”

Recalling how it all came together with that album, Trucks said many years ago:

“That weekend in March of ‘71 when we recorded ‘At Fillmore East,’ most of the time it clicked. We were finally starting to catch up with what we were listening to.

“We had lived together…we got in trouble together; we all just moved as a unit. And then, when we got onstage to play, that’s what it was all about — and it just happened to all come together that weekend.”

This live album (which was recorded in New York City) went platinum and started a streak of popularity for the band, which included the following records:

  • Eat a Peach (1972, released after Duane Allman’s death the prior year).

  • Brothers and Sisters (1973, it went to number-one on the Billboard chart).

  • Win, Lose or Draw (1975).

  • Enlightened Rogues (1979, the band’s last Top 10 full-length).

The Allman Brother would go on to issue several more studio, live and archival LPs through the decades.

In the Allman Brothers biography, “One Way Out, guitarist Dicky Betts described Trains as a musician with “drive and strength.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone last year, Trucks thought back on the Allman Brothers Band’s unexpected status as concert headliners.

“We were in another universe,” he said at the time, expounding as follows:

“We were out spreading the gospel of this music we had discovered. We never thought that we would be more than an opening act.

“Atlantic Records was riding our ass constantly to get Gregg out from behind the organ, stick a salami down his pants and jump around the stage like Robert Plant. We told them to go fuck themselves. ‘We’re playing this for ourselves. We’ve tried it your way before.

“We didn’t make any money and we had a miserable time…’

“Little by little, people started understanding what we were doing. But it had to start with us.

“Once the crowd got in and we could feed on their energy, we’d feed it back to them.”

We send our condolences to the friends, family members and loved ones of Butch Trucks.

Paul Kantner Dies; Jefferson Airplane Co-Founder Was 74

Paul Kantner, a legendary guitarist and singer and a founding member of beloved band Jefferson Airplane, died Thursday of multiple organ failure.

He was 74 years old.

Paul Kantner

Kantner’s publicist confirmed the sad news to The San Francisco Chronicle, also confirming that Kanter had suffered a heart attack earlier in the week.

Between 1965 and 1972, Jefferson Airplane rose to prominence in California, specifically the Bay Area counterculture psychedelic rock scene, helping to define what became known as the “San Francisco sound.”

Along with Marty Balin, Kantner formed the group in a bar.

They evolved from a folk group into something far more unique amidst the area’s ongoing experimentation with drugs at the time.

The band’s second album, “Surrealistic Pillow,” climbed to number-three on the Billboard 200 with the help of singles “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit.

Kantner is survived by sons Gareth and Alexander and daughter China.

He is the first member of the group to pass away, with Jack Casady, Grace Slick, Balin and Jorma Kaukonen still alive and kicking.

Kantner was also a founding member of the band’s spin-off project Jefferson Starship.

We send our condolences to his family members, friends and loved ones.

Serena Williams: Dating Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian?

For weeks now, we’ve been hearing rumors that Serena Williams and Drake are dating. It’s even been reported that Serena is pregnant with Drake’s baby.

Now, however, Us Weekly is reporting that Serena is hooking up with a lesser-known – but no less successful – new boo.

The tabloid claims that Serena is dating Alexis Ohanian – the 32-year-old Internet entrepreneur who’s best known as the co-founder of social news site Reddit.

Apparently, the new couple met at a lunch for successful young people and immediately hit it off – even though Ohanian is not a tennis fan.

“He said he’d never been into tennis until they started dating,” a source tells Us.

The same source says that the couple is already so inseparable that Ohanian has started joining Williams for her training sessions.

The insider claims that during a recent workout, “[Ohanian] called her babe and they held hands.”

So should we expect a weepy, auto-tuned breakup ballad from Drake? Did Serena dump him for being unfaithful, as she reportedly threatened to?

Nah, apparently it’s nothing quite so dramatic. The source says the relationship between Drizzy and Serena was never anything more than a “flirty friendship.”

We don’t care what anyone says. We still think she blames the dude for her loss against Roberta Vinci.

Devo Co-Founder -- 9/11 Themed Wedding ... Box-Cutters Anyone?

Z STAFF

EXCLUSIVE

0914-casal-devo-wedding-TMZ-01The co-founder of Devo and his bride hung their faces off a Twin Towers cake to celebrate their marriage with the most bizarre, and possibly offensive, wedding reception … EVER.

Jerry Casale — Devo’s singer and bassist — married Krista Napp on Friday at Michael’s Restaurant in Santa Monica. Of course, Friday marked the 14th anniversary of the September 11th attacks … a fact the bride and groom made sure their guests would never forget.

Fact 1: Their cake was the World Trade Center, with their images on top of each tower.

Fact 2:  Guests got real box cutters as party favors.

Fact 3: Their table setting cards had an image of a “Gerald & Krista” engraved box cutter.

0914-SUB-casal-devo-wedding-TMZ-01If it seems outrageous and offensive to make the murder of 2,977 people the centerpiece of your wedding — we’re told Jerry and Krista’s friends weren’t the least bit fazed because they both have a dark and strange sense of humor.

As one guest put it … Jerry has “real heart as an artist, and is a super sweet guy.”
