Michelle McNamara: Patton Oswalt"s Late Wife Helps Apprehend Golden State Killer

Back in April of 2016, author Michelle McNamara passed away unexpectedly at the age of 42.

Though perhaps best known to the general public as the wife of comedian Patton Oswalt, McNamara was a highly-regarded true crime writer who was hard at work on her magnum opus at the time of her death.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark became an instant bestseller when it was published posthumously in February of this year, and now it looks as though the book may have helped lead police to a serial killer and rapist who evaded capture for more than four decades.

Former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested in Sacramento this morning on two counts of murder.

There’s reason to believe that DeAngelo might be the man police referred to as the East Area Rapist and who McNamara dubbed the Golden State Killer – an elusive suspect whose DNA ties him to 12 murders, 45 sexual assaults, and 120 burglaries committed between 1976 and 1986.

The investigation has been referred to by Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert as “the most prolific unsolved serial killing case probably in modern history.”

At the time of her death, McNamara’s manuscript was left unfinished.

The published version has been supplemented with material from researcher Paul Haynes and journalist Billy Jensen as well as an afterword by Oswalt, all of whom took to social media today to celebrate what appears to be the completion of McNamara’s life’s work.

“Think you got him, Michelle,” Oswalt said in an emotional video posted to Instagram this morning.

The famed comic will also produce an upcoming HBO docudrama about the GSK investigation.

The publicity surrounding the book and HBO special is believed to have prompted Sacramento police to re-open the 32-year-old cold case.

Interestingly, when news of DeAngelo’s arrest broke, Oswalt was with the book’s research team at a press event in McNamara’s hometown of Chicago last night, which also served as the first night of filming for the HBO documentary.

“Ended with me saying, ‘He’s running out of time.’ And now all of this. Surreal,” Oswalt tweeted today.

Many fans of McNamara’s work have posted some of the more eerily prescient passages of her first and last book, particularly a section in which she addresses the killer directly, imagining him being apprehended as an old man.

“You’re long past leaping over a fence. Take one of your hyper, gulping breaths. Clench your teeth. Inch timidly toward the insistent bell,” McNamara writes.

“This is how it ends for you … Open the door. Show us your face. Walk into the light.”

While there are certainly no happy endings in a story this macabre, we hope that DeAngelo’s arrest can bring a modicum of relief to those who were tormented by his crimes – as well as the family of the woman who devoted her final days to seeing him brought to justice.

Riverdale Season 2 Episode 3 Recap: What Does The Killer Want?

The killer’s intention became as clear as day on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 3 when he sent a chilling bit of proof to Alice because she could write all about it in her newspaper.

The Black Hood wanted to rid Riverdale of all the sinners and make the town great again. In order to make everyone believe he was the villain, he also sent Fred’s wallet and Ms. Grundy’s glasses.

Mayor McCoy and Sheriff Keller told Alice to keep the package on the down low, but she was adamant the residents of the town needed to know the truth about what was going on.

All of this sent Archie on a downward spiral as he tried to find a way to keep his town safe from the killer. That resulted in him starting the “Red Circle” group.

He, along with various members of Riverdale High decided to keep everyone away from harm. Their first big call to arms was someone following Ethel Muggs who was walking home in the dead of night.

They managed to save her, but she was severely shaken up. Does Ethel have some dark secret she’s hiding from those nearest to her? That will be one of the more significant questions as we delve deeper into Riverdale Season 2.

Meanwhile, Veronica continued her battle for power with her mother when she brought her friends over to watch the season premiere of The Bachelorette.

Hiram was still trying to play nice with Veronica, but he did make it clear to Archie he would not stand for him visiting Veronica in the middle of the night and staying over.

He did confirm he was glad about the way Archie was pro-active to keep the town safe, so they do seem to be on the same wavelength.

Hiram did scold Hermione for trying to “poison” Veronica against him. It seemed like Hermione did not want Veronica getting into her father’s study. It’s unclear whether she was jealous because she (Hermione) does not get invited.

Jughead kicked off his studies at Southside High, and he met Toni Topaz who introduced him to the various groups of people present in the school.

He tried to get the school paper off the ground, and a teacher actually allowed him to do it. Not everything went well, however. The youngster was locked in the school in the dead of night and brutally attacked because he did not want to join the Serpents.

In the end, he realized that he would need to join them if he wanted to keep safe at the school. He may have been reluctant about it at first, but something tells me he will be friends with them all before long.

Then there was Kevin, who continued putting his life on the line by cruising in the woods. Betty was not impressed that he was doing this and it paved the way for the mother of all showdowns.

Kevin felt like everything was so easy for everyone else, but he could not do anything in town without being scrutinized for it. The friends parted ways, and Kevin was unamused that she told his father everything.

There was a big scene between Kevin and Moose. Yes, both Moose and Midge survived. It looks like Kevin and Moose could try and forge a relationship together, but that would mean Moose having to come out.

What did you think of all the twists?

Riverdale continues next Thursday on The CW!

Tupac Shakur Killer: Finally Identified In New Documentary?

It’s been 21 years since Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas.

The hip hop icon was just 25 years old when he was killed.

Tupac’s death remains a subject of fascination for many, not only because such a tremendous talent was struck down in his prime, but also because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding his murder.

On Sunday night, Fox aired a two-hour documentary entitled Who Shot Biggie & Tupac? and despite the lurid title, the special featured real insights and evidence from those familiar with the cases.

In fact, two police officers with intimate knowledge of the details of the murder offered what they say is the decisive answer to the question of who shot Shakur.

Officers Tim Bennan and Robert Ladd were both employed by the Compton Police Department at the time of Shakur’s murder.

Since the shooting took place in Las Vegas, they were not directly involved with the investigation, but the officers did coordinate with detectives who worked on the case.

Bennan and Ladd say they pointed the investigation in the direction of a man who they still believe is the culprit.

“We believe Orlando Anderson was the one who did it,” Ladd told journalist Soledad O’Brien on last night’s show.

Anderson had been on the LAPD’s radar from the time he attempted to shoot someone as part of a Crips gang initiation when he was just 15.

At the time of Shakur’s death, Anderson was already under investigation for his alleged involvement in a different murder.

Ladd and Bennan say that despite all the theories about elaborate conspiracies surrounding Tupac’s death (many believe jailed former music mogul Suge Knight ordered Shakur’s murder), the motive was no more complex than an old beef amongst gang members.

“They had all these other theories going on, but it was a really simple gang one-on-one to Tim and I,” Ladd says of the investigating officers.

Anderson certainly had motive–he was a member of a rival gang and had once suffered a savage beating at the hands of Shakur’s security team–and Bennan and Ladd say they were able to trace the murder weapon back to him.

Bennan says he found the .40 calibre handgun that was used to murder Shakur in a Compton evidence locker.

A tag stated that it was found at a gang member’s girlfriend’s house.

Officers later learned that that gang member had also been murdered in Las Vegas around the time of Shakur’s death.

Vegas police chose not to pursue the lead, and as a result, Bennan and Ladd say, they allowed a killer to go free.

Anderson was murdered in a dispute over drug money in 1998, which means Bennan and Ladd’s theory will likely remain unproven.

And hopeful fans will continue to theorize that Tupac is still alive somewhere.
