The sad news was confirmed by Clark’s official Facebook page.

While no cause of death has been announced, Clark stopped touring in 2012 due to declining health.

It is believed that the artist behind 13 studio albums had been diagnosed with cancer.

Although a native of Texas, Clark was considered a songwriting fixture in Nashville for more than four decades.

He worked with such legends as Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill and will be best remembered for songs such as “Homegrown Tomatoes,” “Desperados Waiting for a Train” and “L.A. Freeway.”

Following the news of his passing, celebrities from across all industries paid their respects via social media.

Here are a few examples:

Jeff Daniels: “An American artist. Guy Clark. RIP.”

Lance Armstrong: “RIP Guy Clark. One of the greats. He was an inspiration to not only Texas singer/songwriters but also to many others the world over.”

Kacey Musgraves: “Sad to hear about the passing of Guy Clark. I’ll never forget the day I wrote with him and him busting out a J the size of a baseball bat.”

Johnny Knoxville: “And we lose yet another legend. R.I.P. Guy Clark. 2016, the year the music died.”

Roseanne Cash: “Travel safe, old friend. I would not be the songwriter I am if I hadn’t sat at your table and learned from a master.”

Over the past 10 years, Clark was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting by the Americana Music Association.

We send our condolences to the loved ones of Guy Clark.
