Game of Thrones Season 7: When Will It Premiere?

The reign of Queen Cersei will last for longer than we previously imagined on Game of Thrones.

HBO confirmed on Monday that Game of Thrones Season 7 will not premiere until some time in the summer of 2017.

Why the delay? It’s actually weather-related (see statement below) and it is interesting to note for a couple reasons:

FIRST, Game of Thrones has never before premiered later than April 24.

SECOND, this maneuver will take the show out of Emmy consideration next year because the eligibility period concludes on May 31.

That sound you hear? It’s of hundreds of producers from other shows standing up and cheering.

(The epic drama led all other programs in 2016 with a whopping 23 total nominations and it won Best Drama last year.)

“Now that winter has arrived on Game of Thrones, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing,” said HBO’s president of production, Casey Bloys, in a statement.

“Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”

We know what you’re all thinking in response to this news:

Shame

Oh, there’s one more piece of bad news:

Game of Thrones Season 7 will only be comprised of seven episodes; past seasons have been comprised of 10.

At the conclusion of Game of Thrones Season 6, well… a lot happened.

Cersei blew up her enemies.

Tommen committed suicide.

Cersei took over the Iron Throne.

Arya killed someone on her list.

Jon Snow was named King of the North.

Dany gathered together quite an army and we concluded the season with them sailing toward King’s Landing.

We’ve compiled a list of the most memorable moments from the finale below.

You’ll sadly now have extra time to ponder where each storyline is going, following today’s announcement from HBO.
