Emmy Awards 2017: Who SHOULD Win? Who WILL Win?

The 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Sunday, September 17.

Stephen Colbert will host the star-studded event that will bring the best talent from the small screen together to celebrate the best shows on television.

Who do we think will win the top prizes? Who do we think SHOULD win the top prizes?

Find out below!

1. WILL Win: Best Comedy Series

Veep promotional poster

Veep is generally a hilarious comedy series, but the show was just not quite as funny during the most recent season. The acting was still on fine form, but Atlanta deserves the win.

2. SHOULD Win: Best Comedy Series

Atlanta promotional picture

Atlanta. The show was a roaring success when it debuted in 2016, and part of that was down to the solid script and acting from Donald Glover. It has a solid shot at winning, but this category may as well be named after Veep which will win.

3. WILL Win: Best Comedy Actress

Julia louis dreyfus at the 2015 emmys

Julia Louis Dreyfus is one of the best comedy actresses out there, so we would not be totally mad about her winning.

4. SHOULD Win: Best Comedy Actress

Tracee ellis ross at 2017 mtv awards

Tracee Ellis-Ross has great comedy timing and is very likeable as Bow Johnson, so we do think she’s in with a chance at winning.

5. WILL Win: Best Comedy Actor

Jeffrey tambor

Jeffrey Tambor has been recognized in the past for his role on Transparent and the Emmy voters have been known to let the same person win more than once.

6. SHOULD Win: Best Comedy Actor

Donald glover

Donald Glover turned in a convincing performance as Earn on Atlanta Season 1. Glover is a genius and deserves the award.

Emmy Nominations 2017: Who Got Snubbed?

We now know which shows and stars have been nominated for Emmy Awards in 2017.

Which means one thing only: It"s time to discuss and debate who did NOT nominated for Emmy Awards in 2017.

Which actors, actresses, comedies and/or drama got snubbed from contention this year?

In our opinion… the following ones!

Scroll around to find out how we"d change around some categories, inserting certain nominees over others and honoring what and who has been truly best about television over the past year…

1. Transparent

Transparent

How did practically every star get nominated and yet not the series itself? Like it’s not a much better show than Modern Family, which hasn’t really been funny in years?

2. The Americans

The americans

Like Modern Family, House of Cards continues to receive nominations just… because? Because it’s been around for awhile? The Americans is probably the best show on TV.

3. Orange is the New Black

Orange is the new black

Orange is the New Black also deserved a spot (in Best Drama) over Westworld, which may air on HBO, but which focuses way too much on its mysteries over its character development.

4. Justin Theroux, The Leftovers

Justin theroux the leftovers

Look, we all adore Anthony Hopkins. He’s a legend. And he did not put on a better performance in Westworld than Justin Theroux did on Season 3 of The Leftovers.

5. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Fargo

Mary elizabeth winstead fargo

She was the only reason to keep watching Fargo Season 3. We’d have included her over Judy Davis from FEUD.

6. American Crime

American crime

We all adore FX. But it’s a…. well… crime that FEUD was nominated for Best Limited Series over American Crime.

2017 Emmy Awards: Who Got Nominated? Who Got Snubbed?

The 2017 Emmy Awards will air on September 17 and be hosted by Stephen Colbert.

Who will win?

We can’t say for certain, except the field will be especially wide open this year.

go emmys

Because Game of Thrones Season 6 did not premiere until July, it missed the deadline of Emmy eligibility.

No star is nominated in any category and the show cannot repeat as Best Drama.

So the door is wide open for the following actors, actresses and programs. Which of the just-announced nominees will walk excitedly and proudly through it?

Glenne Headly Dies; Former Emmy Nominee Was 63 Years Old

Glenne Headly, an Emmy Award-nominated actress likely best known her role in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, has sadly passed away.

She was 63 years old.

This unfortunate piece of news was confirmed by Headly’s rep, Annie Schmidt, who said in a statement to USA Today:

“It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the passing of Glenne Headly. We ask that her family’s privacy be respected in this difficult time.”

No other details regarding the star’s death have been made available at this time.

Headly got her start in the industry as an original member of Chicago’s famous Steppenwolf Theatre Company, working at the time alongside future stars such as John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, Laurie Metcalfe, Joan Allen, Terry Kinney and Rondi Reed.

She was in production on the Hulu series Future Man at the time of her death.

The veteran actress made her big screen debut in 1981 with Four Friends; she went on to star as an heiress targeted by competing con men (played by Steve Martin and Michael Caine) in the 1988 comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

As mentioned above, to this day, the latter role likely remains her most beloved part.

But it wasn’t her last, not by a long shot.

Headly also worked with Warren Beatty in 1990’s Dick Tracy and Richard Dreyfus in 1995’s Mr. Holland’s Opus.

More recently, she portrayed mother to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character in 2013’s Don Jon and appeared on the shows The Night Of and Parks and Recreation.

She earned her two Emmy nomination over the course of her career as well:

First, in 1989 for the miniseries Lonesome Dove.

Second, in 1996, for the television film Bastard out of Carolina.

At the time of her passing, Headly had been working opposite Josh Hutcherson of The Hunger Games, who wrote a touching message on Instagram in light of the news.

Along with the photo of a gorgeous sunset, the actor penned the following tribute:

“Her eyes brought to life so many amazing characters over the years and her love brought to life a beautiful family.

“I’m gonna miss her presence, her smile, and the way she made me feel like her son before, between, and after they called action and cut.

“Grab onto those who make you feel loved. My heart is broken today and I can only imagine what those closest to her are going through.

“My broken heart goes out to all of you as well. This is a photo of my home. Kentucky. I love my family and friends so much. I hope you all feel it.

“With lead hearts we are going to celebrate the irreplaceable Glenne Headly. LOVE.”

Headly is survived by her husband Byron McCulloch and son Stirling.

We send our condolences to her loved ones and to the loved ones of all celebrities who died this year.

May they rest in peace.

2016 Emmy Awards: Who Got Snubbed?!?

The 2016 Emmy Award nominations are in.

And while we couldn"t be more excited that The Americans is finally being shown the love it deserves, we do have a few complaints to file.

The following shows and stars totally deserved to make the Emmy cut, don"t you think?!?

1. Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory

Mayim bialik the big bang theory

Bialik for Lead Actress in a Comedy. She grounds a sitcom in a seriousness than is often needed. To whom would we give the boot? Amy Schumer from Inside Amy Schumer … only because we don’t believe sketch comedy stars should be nominated. They aren’t playing a character, it’s a totally different kind of acting!

2. Eva Green, Penny Dreadful

Eva green penny dreadful

We dare you to find a more harrowing performance from the last decade. Green, simply put, made this Showtime drama. We’d have chosen her over Robin Wright from House of Cards. That show is so played out.

3. Uzo Aduba, Orange Is the New Black

Uzo aduba orange is the new black

Aduba won an Emmy last year. We’d have included her this year in the Drama category (did you watch the last few episodes of Season 4?!?) and given Maggie Smith the axe. Seriously, who isn’t over Downton Abbey at this point?!?

4. Paul Giamatti, Billions

Paul giamatti billions

Yes, he chewed some scenery… but he made a delicious meal out of it! We would have been happier to see him land in the Lead Actor category over Liev Schreiber.

5. Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rachel bloom crazy ex girlfriend

The CW deserves some Emmy love! Bloom gave a far more interested and nuanced performance than Lily Tomlin in Grace and Frankie.

6. Constance Wu, Fresh Off the Boat

Constance wu fresh off the boat

We’re gonna cheat here. We’d have included Wu as a Supporting Actress and chosen her over Kate McKinnon of SNL.

Kelly and Michael Celebrate Daytime Emmy Awards Win

Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan just won a pretty major award.

And it was NOT for Most Awkward On-Screen Duo in the History of Television.

Instead, despite the crazy turmoil and tension that currently engulfing this morning program, Ripa and Strahan won Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment Co-Hosts at the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards.

How ironic is that?!?

The controversial duo didn"t actually attend the ceremony, but don"t read too much into that fact:

They won the same distinction in 2015 and didn"t attend then, either.

On Monday’s broadcast, just hours after the victory, Ripa and Strahan walked out holding hands and trophies.

“So, what’d y’all do yesterday?” Ripa said. “We won an Emmy!”

The two then thanked each other and the crowd before Ripa revealed she didn’t know they had won until people texted congratulations after the fact.

Those in this category submit specific episodes for consideration and it was the Halloween show that led to the win, sources confirm, prompting Ripa to thank the producer behind it.

“It’s about a team, and that’s what we have here,” Strahan said.

That"s interesting of him to say, of course, considering the ex-football player is leaving Live for GMA in just a couple weeks.

A new report also claims that Strahan has been very difficult to work with for awhile now and that Ripa was especially upset of his move to GMA because she predicted it awhile back.

When Strahan first stared doing segment for that program, Ripa told producers of Live that it would be a problem because his focus was elsewhere.

Fast forward to last month and to Strahan"s announcement and to Ripa"s subsequent anger over a development she saw coming a long time ago.

As viewers wonder who will replace Strahan, however, Kelly and Michael didn"t look to the future on today"s telecast

They talked about the past in relation to their big Emmys victory.

Watch their exchange and judge how awkward it was for yourself below:

Kanye West Thinks Keeping of the Kardashians Should Win an Emmy

Kanye West has said some pretty dumb stuff over the years. And we love him for it.

But even Kanye West may have gone too far this time around.

In an interview with “SHOWstudio” as part of its “In Camera” live interview series, West gushes over wife Kim Kardashian and the reality program that helped make her a household name.

“I feel proud to be in a family that has so many people breaking ground for the generations to come,” Kanye said, adding that reality TV is a type of “art form,” and that “my wife and my family should’ve had plenty of Emmys by now.”

So, why hasn’t she?

Because “reality shows are considered to be like rap was when the Mondrian [hotel in L.A.] wouldn’t let Run DMC and mother[expletive]ing Will Smith stay there because they were rappers,” Kanye explained.

In other words: Reality TV doesn’t get any respect, the same way rappers were once not considered true artists.

West goes on to say that he doesn’t understand “the idea of a reality star not being allowed into a fashion show or not being nominated for their show, even if it’s the longest running and the most popular and… everybody I know watches it.”

It is true that plenty of folks out there watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians online or on their television screens.

But it’s also true that the Emmys are meant to recognize talent, not popularity. And… need we really say anymore?

Nancy Lee Grahn Apologizes for Slamming Viola Davis Emmy Speech

It may have been the highlight of the 2015 Emmy Awards:

Viola Davis became the first African-American to ever win Lead Actress in a Drama, breaking into tears on stage, quoting Harriet Tubman and earning a standing ovation.

You can watch the stirring speech above.

Nearly everyone who watched the Emmys cited Davis’ triumph as a step in the right direction for Hollywood… all except Nancy Lee Grahn, that is.

“I wish I loved #ViolaDavis Speech, but I thought she should have let @shondarhimes write it,” the General Hospital star wrote, citing the Grey’s Anatomy creator and How to Get Away with Murder producer.

Along with quoting Tubman and giving props to fellow stars Kerry Washington and Halle Berry, Davis said:

“The only thing that separates women of color from everyone else is opportunity… You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.

“So here’s to all the writers, the awesome people – people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.”

Grahn took issue with this message.

“I think she’s the bees knees but she’s elite of TV performers. Brilliant as she is. She has never been discriminated against…

“Try being any woman in TV. Wish she’d brought every woman in the picture. I wish I’d opportunity to play roles she gets.”

Following major backlash (note to pretty much all Caucasians: refrain from ever telling an African-American that he or she has never faced discrimination), Grahn jumped back on Twitter and wrote the following:

Viola Davis winning lead actress Emmy’s historic. My upset is acting awards dont fix racial injustice. As an actor I see how irrelevant we r. I never mean to diminish her accomplishment. She is a goddess. I want equality 4 ALL women, not just actors.

We’re sure Davis would say the same.

Dave Grohl -- Foo Fighters Emmy Diss ... You Can"t Cut Our Songs Short

Z STAFF

EXCLUSIVE

0921-dave-grohl-emmys-tmz-01Now we know why Dave Grohl was so pissed about the Foo Fighters getting yanked from the Emmy Awards stage — and it’s all about size. Yes, it matters … especially at award shows.

A rep for Grohl tells TMZ … the band was all set to perform, and would have been the first ever rock band to play the Emmys. But the rep says, “FOX then refused to allow the band to play a full song from the Emmy-winning Sonic Highways.”

According to our sources, the network wanted the band to play half of their winning song and then play part of their hit song “Learn to Fly” … but the band wasn’t having it.

We’re told the directive came straight from the network and not the television academy, who was on board with the band’s plan to play what they wanted to.

FF won 2 Emmys for its HBO docuseries, but you can tell from his reaction last night … Dave wanted to play, but obviously … he wanted it his way.

We have a call in to FOX and the Emmys for their side of the story.

Will Amy Schumer"s Emmy Win Trump THIS Risqué Onstage Moment With Madonna As The "Best Night" Of Her Life?! See What She Said HERE!

What a night!

Amy Schumer may have just had the best night of her life on Sunday after she took home her first Emmy for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for her show, Inside Amy Schumer!

However, there is still one evening that may even trump her recent win.

ICYMI: Miz Schumer recently joined Madonna onstage for a little grinding session during the Material Girl’s Rebel Heart Tour! LOVES it!

Related: Amy Schumer Finds A Way To Keep Cool On The Emmys Red Carpet

And it seems the blonde beauty loved her mid-concert, cameo appearance as much as we did — since she labeled it the “best night” of her life. Fierce!

Prior to her win, she shared with EXTRA:

“Well, first of all, I had no idea I was going back on stage and I’m, like, drinking and sweating and her show’s amazing and they’re like, ‘Go dance with her.’ Then, all of a sudden, there I’m bent over — and if I had a nickel for every time that’s happened — but it was the best night of my life, getting to dance on stage with Madonna!”

AH-Mazing! We love Amy’s impromptu spirit — though we have a feeling that the frisky onstage moment with the Queen of Pop has just been demoted. HA!

Regardless, it’s been quite the summer for the Trainwreck star. Not only did the starlet cement her A-list status with her summer blockbuster, but she also acquired a new BFF in the Oscar winner, Jennifer Lawrence. We couldn’t dream up a better duo!

On her bestie, she noted:

“She’s awesome, she’s the best. We met this summer and just, like, really hit it off, and we started writing a script together and it was going well so we wrote a movie.”

We’re too excited! Unfortunately, the highly anticipated comedy won’t even start shooting until NEXT year. Blerg.

Nonetheless, what do you think Amy’s most excited about?! Are U Team Madonna or Team Emmys??

SOUND OFF in the comments (below)!

Viola Davis" Emmy Speech Will Bring You to Tears

How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis made history at the Emmy Awards as the first African-American winner of Best Actress in a Drama.

She reacted to that victory in amazing fashion.

The woman who bring lawyer and law school professor Annalise Keating to life used the occasion to speak on racial inequality in Hollywood.

She also movingly thanked all those who helped her get the leading role, channeling Harriet Tubman"s moving quote about racial divides:

"The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is simply opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."

"So here"s to all the writers, the awesome people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black."

Thanking many executives, including Shonda Rhimes, Davis also praised a series of black female actresses, some of them in the audience.

"And to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goods, to Gabrielle Union, thank you."

"Thank you for taking us over that line," she said as the camera cut to the tearful Scandal and Empire stars, who were on their feet cheering.

Andy Samberg Opens The 2015 Emmy Awards With Music And Plenty Of Laughs With Jokes About Donald Trump, Paula Deen, And MORE!

Well that was certainly a mouthful!

Andy Samberg is hosting the 2015 Emmys, which means things got started off with PLENTY of laughs as he named as many shows as he possibly could with a hilarious musical number!

The SNL alum then went on to talk about the diversity amongst all of the candidates, which naturally led him to make a couple of jokes at Donald Trump and Paula Deen‘s expense!

But then things got a bit heated as Andy brought up his beef with fellow comedian Amy Poehler! Who knew they were even feuding??? LOLz!

Ch-ch-check out the hilarious opening (above)!

It"s An Honor Just To Be Nominated, Right? You Won"t Believe These TV Stars Have NEVER Won An Emmy!

The 67th Emmy Awards are tonight!

This prestigious night honors the finest programs in television, and only gets more competitive as the years go on — because there is SO much quality TV nowadays!

That surge in competition is a double edged sword, because a ton of deserving actors have been forced to perform the “gracious loser clap” year after year by losing out to someone else!

It’s the last year for Jon Hamm and Amy Poehler to win for their roles on Mad Men and Parks & Recreation. If not, they will sadly remain with these other actors who have NEVER won an Emmy!
