Dodge Exploits Martin Luther King to Sell Trucks, Twitter Erupts
Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream a very long time ago.
And we can assure readers of the following:
His dream was most definitely not to have his legendary words used in an ad for Dodge Ram trucks.
But that"s exactly what the car company did at Super Bowl 52, excerpting portions of the activity"s 1968 speech "The Drum Major Instinct."
The 30-second ad cost Dodge $ 5 million… and a great deal of negative PR.
It turned into a tribute to patriotism, complete with photos of U.S. Marines and a camouflage-clad soldier hugging his child.
This was a pitch for Dodge Ram trucks" "Built To Serve" volunteer program, but the commercial instead provoked anger from many viewers and a rebuke from the King Center itself, which says its mission is to carry on his teachings and to "empower change-makers who are continuing his efforts today."
The mission does NOT include the use of King to sell a bunch of vehicles.
Tweeted The King Center during the game, as opinions were being voiced all around social media:
Neither @TheKingCenter nor @BerniceKing is the entity that approves the use of #MLK"s words or imagery for use in merchandise, entertainment (movies, music, artwork, etc) or advertisement, including tonight"s @Dodge #SuperBowl commercial.
Later, after writer Michael Arceneaux wrote on Twitter, "So that means the King children allowed Dr. King"s voice to be used to sell me a Dodge truck," Bernice King replied very simply:
"No."
Added Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University:
"The use of MLK to promote Ram trucks strikes many people as crass and inappropriate."
And Kelly O"Keefe, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University"s Brandcenter:
"They pushed it over the edge. You wanted to root for it because the cause is good, but it just didn"t end up fitting the brand, so you ended up feeling a little bit manipulated."

Grandma Buys X-Rated Book for 6-Year Old, Twitter Erupts

Spirit Airlines Cancels Flights in Florida, Mass Chaos Erupts
Move over, Florida Man.
Take a seat, Florida Woman.
We need to talk for a moment about… Florida Airport?!?
Yes.
On Monday, May 8 police officers were called to the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale to deal with mass commotion after a multitude of passengers grew irate over the cancelation of their flights.
"There were several people there that were upset," Broward County Sheriff"s Office spokeswoman Gina Carter told ABC News in response to the incident, adding:
"We were called in to just make sure that things were kept from getting very unruly."
As you can see in the following footage, however, things most definitely became unruly.
Three people were reportedly placed under arrest for their roles in the melee, as angry travelers yelled at staffers while cops tried to restore order.
One witness told ABC"s Florida affiliate WSVN that numerous people were detained.
"I saw two people go down on the floor and get … handcuffed and dragged out of here," said the passenger, who was not named in the report.
Spirit is in the middle of a union dispute with the Airline Pilots Association and its pilots, who refused to fly yesterday of protest.
Said a spokesperson for the company in light of this footage;
"We are shocked and saddened to see the videos of what took place at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.
"This is a result of unlawful labor activity by some Spirit pilots designed to disrupt Spirit operations for our customers, by canceling multiple flights across our network."
The incident comes at a bad time in general for the airline industry.
Over the past several weeks…

- Delta has kicked off a passenger for using the bathroom.
- Virgin has refused to let a three-year old cancer patient on board a plane.

Fyre Festival: Chaos Erupts at Ja Rule-Hosted Event
There’s a good chance that, like us, you never heard about the Fyre Festival before today.
After all, this was no Coachella-style fest for the peasants.
Fyre – co-organized by rapper Ja Rule and tech entrepreneur Billy McFarland – was billed as a “luxury event” for those who find traditional festivals just a tad to plebeian.
The line-up didn’t offer much to write home about (headliners included Blink-182 and Tyga), but the accommodations were supposed to be.
With tickets ranging in price from $ 1,000 to $ 12,000, the Bahamas-based event was to offer festival-goers a once in a lifetime experience:
Guests were to be flown in from Miami, and once on the island they would stay in a geodesic and engage in activities such as jet skiing and kayaking.
It all started to unravel, however, when the talent started to back out, citing lack of advance payment and insufficient sound equipment.
Moments ago, the first annual Fyre Festival was “postponed indefinitely,” but not before the conditions deteriorated rapidly and the whole situation descended into a level of chaos that more than one attendee has compared to the Hunger Games.
Guests are reportedly stranded in disaster relief tents, eating hastily thrown together meals (such as the one pictured above) that could generously be described as less than luxurious.
“Someone fainted and they locked us in a room using a huge chain and deadbolt,” one attendee tells Vice News.
Guests who reportedly paid as much as $ 250,000 to stay on the festival grounds for the weekend were diverted to an impromptu “daytime party” after arriving from the airport so that organizers could arrange some sort of temporary housing.
When the crowd (quite understandably) became unruly and hashtags like #FyreFraud began to trend on Twitter, organizers finally sent word that the event was canceled:
“Due to unforeseen and extenuating circumstances, Fyre Festival has been fully postponed,” reads a message posted on the event’s Twitter page.
“After assessing the situation this morning and looking at best options for our guests, we cannot move forward as we hoped we could. At this time, we are working tirelessly to get flights scheduled and get all travelers home safely.”
Now, those responsible for the chaos are reportedly scrambling to protect themselves from lawsuits and even prosecution.
It’s unlikely that anyone will be imprisoned as a result of the allegations of fraud and unsafe conditions, we’re guessing Ja Rule – who was released from prison in 2013 and remained on probation until last year – is less than thrilled that by the prospect of winding up back in court.

Jenelle Evans vs. Leah Messer: Feud Erupts on Twitter!
Last night’s Teen Mom 2 reunion show focused on Kailyn Lowry and Chelsea Houska, and while there was plenty of drama on those fronts (particularly on Kailyn’s end), it was a preview of next week’s installment that really got fans talking online.
The clip showed Jenelle storming away from the studio, explaining to a producer that she didn’t believe she was being treated properly.
“I just keep telling everyone I don’t feel good and nothing’s being done about it!” Jenelle shrieks at the poor handler tasked with preventing her from leaving the lot.
“I’m gonna make myself feel better and I’m going to leave,” Jenelle concludes.
Not surprisingly, Jenelle’s diva antics sparked some manor backlash on social media.
Never one to back down from a fight, Evans responded on Twitter:
“Behind the scenes drama,” Jenelle tweeted.
“I was done filming my part of the reunion and was hungry for hours with a burning chest from heart burn.
Sounds like a reasonable explanation.
But if you thought she was done justifying her actions, you don’t know Jenelle.
She continued:
“So I ended up leaving with David and Jace back to the hotel and everyone was trying to keep me from leaving… I just wanted food lol.”
Fans pointed out that the excuses didn’t seem to jibe with the fact that Jenelle told producers she needed to go home because she was sick.
She responded:
“I was sick because I had acid reflux/heartburn from not eating. No one cared cuz I asked for food for 3 hours and wasn’t allowed to leave.”
Yet again, she continued:
“I had acid reflux because I was pregnant. Had it every day until I delivered. Even made me throw up like crazy.”
If there’s anyone on the show who understands taking flak from fans, it’s Leah Messer.
Leah has been criticized for everything from her parenting to her love life,
But even Ms. Messer wasn’t having Jenelle’s excuses:
“She gets paid for this, she should be here,” Messer stated bluntly.
Of course, Chelsea Houska was also pregnant at the time, but unlike Jenelle, Houska is actually well-liked by her co-stars.
So when she was asked about the fact that Chelsea wasn’t feeling well, Leah offered a much warmer response:
“Chelsea is sick,” Leah said.
“I do not blame her, she is carrying a child she needs to go ahead.”
Naturally, Jenelle felt the need to respond to Leah’s criticism, tweeting:
“@TM2LeahDawn damn tell me how you really feel! Haha, I was sick and pregnant with heart burn. You know nothing you’re right so don’t comment.”
She concluded:
“Don’t be fake. #Truth”
Fun fact: the more someone uses “#Truth” the more likely it is that they’re a compulsive liar.

Vanderpump Rules Homophobia Controversy Erupts on Social Media
If you watched Vanderpump Rules last night, you known that the highlight of the episode was unquestionably the roast of Jax Taylor.
For the most part, the cast showed some surprising comedic chops in skewering the West Coast’s answer to The Situation
Unfortunately, as is often the case at this sort of event, someone crossed the line into decidedly “not cool” territory – and surprisingly, it was a member of the audience.
As fans of the show know, rumors about Jax being gay have been circulating for years.
At this point, it’s sort of a running gag amongst the group of frenemies, and while there may be problematic undertones, it seems that the humor isn’t rooted in homophobia, but rather in the notion that Jax used to exchange sexual favors for rent money.
But that’s not the way Brittany Cartwright’s mother sees it.
If you watch Vanderpump Rules online, then you’re aware that Brittany’s mom, Cherrie, is an ultra-conservative, deeply religious woman who’s less than thrilled about her daughter’s choice of suitor.
Remarkably, however, she was unconcerned about the allegations that Jax loves cocaine, cheated on every girlfriend he’s ever had, and has served time behind bars on numerous occasions.
What did bother her, however, was what she described as the “homosexual stuff.”
Jax’s alleged past as a male escort made its way into the night’s stand-up routines, and each time, Cherrie made no effort to conceal her chagrin.
“He’s slept with many, many women,” Tom Schwartz joked about Jax at one point. “And a few men!”
Cherrie grimaced as her daughter jokingly (we think) covered her ears.
Several cast members and producer Andy Cohen have defended Cherrie, claiming that she was simply upset by the idea that her possible future son-in-law might be attracted to other
But in addition to being rooted in a dangerous stereotype about bisexual men, that excuse doesn’t hold water for two reasons:
Cherrie wasn’t upset about the many anecdotes regarding Jax’s infidelity with other women, and she was also outraged by the jokes about Brittany hooking up with Kristen.
Taking place, as it does, in West Hollywood, and featuring as one of its stars the owner of a prominent area gay club, Vanderpump is usually a pretty progressive, liberal-minded show.
(Though the cast rightfully took some flak for reacting to the Orlando nightclub shooting for turning up and dancing on top of bars.)
So fans were upset not only by Cherrie’s homophobic views, but the cast’s defense of her comments.
“Britt & her mom are HUGE #LGBTQ activists,” Stassi Schroeder tweeted during the show.
“Any mom would be concerned if she heard her daughter’s bf might not be ‘into her."”
As we’re reminded every time we see some jackass with a Pepe the Frog meme as his avatar, there is still a lot of hate in America, and some of us are forced to confront it within our own homes or social circles.
Except for in extreme cases, that doesn’t mean that we have to condemn the bigoted parties and sever ties.
But it also doesn’t mean that we have to defend them or make excuses on their behalf.
The way forward is to acknowledge hate and backward ideas and try to help our prejudiced pals see the error of their ways.
Considering Jax and Brittany just landed a spinoff, we get the sense that this a position Mr. Taylor (who’s actually shown himself to be admirably right-minded on this particular issue) will find himself in more often in the years to come.

Sister Wives Season 7 Episode 9 Recap: The Vacation Erupts
On Sister Wives Season 7 Episode 9, the Browns’ big Hawaiian vacationed turned out to be MUCH more stressful than anyone anticipated.
Who are we kidding, obviously it would be stressful.
Appropriately titled “Hawaiian Vacation Erupts,” Sister Wives Season 7 Episode 9 saw all kinds of ISH hit the fan with Kody and kompany.
Fights over parking cars, where to put the beach umbrella, and so on down the line clearly represented much bigger problems overall.
Isn’t that typically how it works on vacay?
Somewhat ironically, yet entirely logically, the Browns hadn’t stayed together in one house or under the same roof in a long ass time.
Hey, when dad has four wives to live with, by definition he’s not around all that much, no matter of he’s the head of the family or not.
Nevertheless, Kody Brown wanted all to acknowledge that he is in charge here, no matter what – he’s leading the family and that’s that.
Well, except for Maddie Brown planning her wedding. She was basically in charge of that and Kody was his usual apathetic self really.
Heck, when Madison told her father that she and Caleb wanted him to marry them, he basically said okay, he’d do it. Nothing emotional.
Not surprisingly, she was a little let down.
Meanwhile, Kody and Meri attempted to figure out where their romance went wrong, and whether they could get back on the right path.
Can they? Did they get anywhere?

Real Housewives of New Jersey: Fight Erupts on Set! Was Teresa Giudice Involved?
If you watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey online, you know that group trips to exotic locales are an annual tradition, and often, the Garden State gals’ vacay proves to be the dramatic high point of the season
This year things are a little different, as Teresa Giudice’s legal troubles have resulted in travel restrictions, but while the ladies had to make due with a Vermont ski trip instead of jetting off to Punta Cana, tempers still heated up:
Radar Online is reporting that two cast members returned from the trip early and Bravo lawyers are investigating after a fight erupted at the quiet resort where the women are staying.
“They arrived in Vermont on Monday, and had been scheduled to stay until Friday,” a source tells the website. “Bravo lawyers had to get involved. It was extremely serious, and viewers will be shocked.”
Bad news for the future of the show (there had already been rumors that RHONJ was on the chopping blick due to its difficult cast), but there’s some good news for fans of Teresa Giudice.
“[Teresa] absolutely wasn’t involved in any of the drama,” the insider says. “She has been very low key, and is still on the trip.”
Teresa is still on probation, and even the slightest altercation might have sent her back to jail, so it looks like for once, she stayed out of it.
Hey, maybe prison has changed her for the better!

Ice Cube -- Pulls Plug On Concert After Fight Erupts

Ice Cube said “show over” after a bunch of concertgoers started fist-fighting … right in front of the stage.
Cube was the last act at the Long Beach concert at the Queen Mary. He was 4 or 5 songs in when the fans started fighting. The video shows the immediate aftermath, when security swarmed the crowd and broke it up.
Cube was furious, saying it was “bulls***” and told them he was done and left the stage.
BTW … before the fight, Cube proudly introduced his son O’Shea Jackson Jr. and gives a shout-out to “Straight Outta Compton.”
