Dodge Exploits Martin Luther King to Sell Trucks, Twitter Erupts

Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream a very long time ago.

And we can assure readers of the following:

His dream was most definitely not to have his legendary words used in an ad for Dodge Ram trucks.

But that"s exactly what the car company did at Super Bowl 52, excerpting portions of the activity"s 1968 speech "The Drum Major Instinct."

The 30-second ad cost Dodge $ 5 million… and a great deal of negative PR.

It turned into a tribute to patriotism, complete with photos of U.S. Marines and a camouflage-clad soldier hugging his child.

This was a pitch for Dodge Ram trucks" "Built To Serve" volunteer program, but the commercial instead provoked anger from many viewers and a rebuke from the King Center itself, which says its mission is to carry on his teachings and to "empower change-makers who are continuing his efforts today."

The mission does NOT include the use of King to sell a bunch of vehicles.

Tweeted The King Center during the game, as opinions were being voiced all around social media:

Neither @TheKingCenter nor @BerniceKing is the entity that approves the use of #MLK"s words or imagery for use in merchandise, entertainment (movies, music, artwork, etc) or advertisement, including tonight"s @Dodge #SuperBowl commercial.

Later, after writer Michael Arceneaux wrote on Twitter, "So that means the King children allowed Dr. King"s voice to be used to sell me a Dodge truck," Bernice King replied very simply:

"No."

Added Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University:

"The use of MLK to promote Ram trucks strikes many people as crass and inappropriate."

And Kelly O"Keefe, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University"s Brandcenter:

"They pushed it over the edge. You wanted to root for it because the cause is good, but it just didn"t end up fitting the brand, so you ended up feeling a little bit manipulated."

Do you agree?

Or is this much ado over very little?

Rob Schneider: BLASTED for Martin Luther King-John Lewis Tweet

Rob Schneider is an expert as many things:

Making bad movies. Making terrible movies. Making historically unfunny and pathetic excuses for movies.

But Schneider does not appear to be a Civil Rights expert, as evidenced by a Tweet that has landed the “actor” in scalding hot water.

On Monday, Schneider felt a need to lecture Georgia Congressman John Lewis on some American history, most notably the way Martin Luther King Jr. lived his legendary life.

Lewis, of course, has been in the news of late because he has said he will NOT attend Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

The politician said last week that he doesn’t consider Trump to be a “legitimate president,” based on intelligence reports that confirm Russia hacked into this year’s election, with the intention of helping Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.

In response to that decision and assessment, Trump went off on Lews via Twitter.

“Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results,” the President-Elect wrote, adding:

“All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!”

This Tweet is racist, misguided and ridiculous.

Lewis literally marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and was arrested on many occasions while fighting for civil rights in the 1960s.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a politician who has accomplished more or taken more action than John Lewis.

j. lewis tweets

But such lack of logic, intelligence and sympathy is to be expected from Trump.

We guess it should have been expected from the actor best known for having portrayed Deuce Bigalow, too.

This is what Schneider wrote yesterday on social media:

“Rep. Lewis. You are a great person. But Dr. King didn’t give in to his anger or his hurt. That is how he accomplished & won Civil Rights.”

Lewis – who has served as the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district since 1987 – was with King on the day of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.

He also famously marched with King during the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery.

And yet Rob Schneider (Rob Schneider!) somehow felt qualified to lecture Lewis on what King did and thought.

Fortunately, Twitter users also saw the irony and felt the anger as a result of this Tweet.

“Rob Scheider [sic] lecturing anyone on anything is offensive, much less John Lewis on MLK Day. #facepalm,” one person wrote online, while another added:

“As if rob schneider and his entire shtick as a sidekick to Adam Sandler career wasn’t embarrassing enough.”

There was also this amazing takedown, which pointed to all the times Schneider played characters that were nothing but ethnic and racial stereotypes:

rob s

Schneider is yet to respond to this onslaught of criticism.

We’d say it would be good for his career if he did so, but let’s be honest:

Rob Scheider has not had any kind of career in a very long time.

If this was his attempt to simply make some news and to see his name in a headline for the first time in years, then well done, Rob! Mission accomplished!

Now you may return to sticking your lips as far up Sandler’s butt as they can go. You’re an idiot.

Zac Efron Stirs Controversy with Idiotic Martin Luther King Tweet

Note to Zac Efron:

You may wanna stick to just taking your shirt off going forward. That always seems to work out well for you.

Attempting to honor one of the most impressive human beings to ever set foot on this planet? Not so much.

As you can see above, the That Awkward Moment actor had himself a very awkward moment on social media yesterday when he Tweeted the following in conjunction with Martin Luther King Day:

I’m grateful for a couple things today: Martin Luther King Jr & 10 million followers on IG.

Efron included with these words a photo of himself rocking aviators and cruising down a palm tree-lined street at dusk.

Oh, and he also included two emojis of a darker-toned pointer finger and fist sign.

Where did Efron go wrong? Just about everywhere, but let’s start with mentioning the world’s best-known civil rights leader in the same breath as his personal Instagram count.

One of these things seems a tad more important than the other.

And it didn’t take long for Internet users to blast Efron for his very poor Tweet choice.

“This is one of the most offensive/diminishing/disrespectful things anyone has said in relation to MLK today. Get over yourself,” Tweeted @AaronTheH, while even someone named @EfronEternal took issue with the well-chiseled star.

“Zac I [heart] you,” this person wrote. “But whichever social media manager told you gaining 10 mil followers and MLK’s work are in the same vein, fire them.”

It’s true. Even Justin Bieber is likely shaking his head over this Tweet… and he once he hoped Anne Frank would have been a Belieber!

Once again: Leave the historical figures alone, all you hot famous men out there.

Just take your shirts off and keeps your mouths shut.
