The Voice Recap: Who Had the Best Original Song?

The top four took to the stage Monday night to perform a cover, an original single and even a duet with their coach.

Oh yes, it’s the end of The Voice Season 14, and that can only mean one thing: Lots of performances from your favorite contestants.

Let’s break down the four remaining stars and how their final performances panned out.

Kyla Jade (Team Blake)

Kyla kept the ball rolling with a cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” and boy, it was a real showstopper.

When she moved on to he original song “The Last Tear,” it seemed like it was going to be one of those slow songs with very little substance.

However, it was so much more. With Kyla’s signature high notes on full display, she continued to throw the ball out of the park and prove that she deserves a place in the finale.

When it came to her duet with Blake, she sprung a leak. Her strong vocals did not mesh well with Blake’s country voice, and that could be problematic when we get down to the final vote.

As it stands, Kyla has a good chance at winning, but she’s not a slam dunk.

Britton Buchanan (Team Alicia)

Britton’s cover of “Good Lovin” was a complete and utter dud. In fact, his vocals have never been his strong point. He parades around the stage at a fast pace.

That could explain why he pants his way through his songs. He needs to stand in one place, and sing. This is The Voice, not So You Think You Can Dance.

The good news for Britton is that his original single was filled with striking lyrics that almost made up for his lack of spark as far as the vocals are concerned.

His duet with Alicia of “Wake Me Up” was bizarre. There was nothing remotely unique about it. It came across as a karaoke duet, and that’s not going to do Britton any favors when it comes to voting.

Spensha Baker (Team Blake)

Spensha’s cover of “Merry Go ‘Round” was not the best. It was one of her worst performances to date, but that’s not to say it was terrible.

Her vocals were still very much present, but it seemed like she was tired of fighting her way to the finish line.

Thankfully, she brought her A-game back to the forefront when it came to her original single, “Old Soul.” The single did feel like something you would expect from someone on Team Blake, and it was performed ever so well.

Unfortunately, her performance with Blake was dull and uninspired. There was a mismatch in the vocals, and it showed.

These two should not be performing together. It’s a bad combination.

Brynn Cartelli (Team Kelly)

Brynn kicked things off with “Skyfall,” and while it’s always a big no-no to tackle an Adele song, she aced it. She flawlessly aced all of the notes and proved she is one of the best contestants of the series.

Even her original single, “Walk My Way” sounded like something you would expect from a seasoned recording artist.

Finally, her performance with Kelly was similarly solid. They both had strong voices and managed to refrain from overpowering each other.

Which of the four will win the coveted title of The Voice?

We will find out Tuesday at 8/7c!

Arrow Season 6 Episode 16 Recap: An Original Character Exits!

Nyssa al Ghul’s return was always going to come with a multitude of drawbacks.

When Arrow Season 6 Episode 16 got underway, members of the League of Assassins debated who should replace Malcolm Merlyn who died on Lian Yu.

That’s when Nyssa appeared on the scene with an army of her own and started to fight with the League. But Nyssa did not manage to stop them going after their next target: Thea.

When she and Roy were in the car, they were attacked, and Nyssa showed up to save them from near certain death.

Back at the lair, Nyssa told Oliver and company that Malcolm had been recruiting an army at the time of his death and that Athena and the others thought Thea had a map they were looking for.

As such, they wanted to kill her and take the map. But Thea did not even know anything about the map, so she decided to join forces with Nyssa to retrieve the map.

Just when it seemed like Nyssa and Thea were getting somewhere, Athena closed in on them in a warehouse in which they found the map, but it was in a safe.

Thea tried to make a getaway with the safe, but Athena appeared out of nowhere and shot her. Team Arrow paid the villain back by shooting her, and everyone managed to escape.

Just as Nyssa told Oliver all about what she was getting up to since their last meeting, Felicity appeared with some great news: She cracked the safe.

But the map had no ink whatsoever on it, so it seemed like a complete waste of time. Oliver then realized that Thea was not happy in Star City and that she should make a getaway with Roy and live a happy life.

The entire group went to take down Athena, but she revealed that the map’s ink only becomes viewable to the human eye when it comes into contact with blood.

A fight broke out once again, and Roy saved everyone when it emerged that the building was rigged with bombs. Thea and Athena battled it out, and Thea’s blood winded up on the map.

The map revealed there were three Lazarus pits and Thea wanted to destroy them all before a bunch of old villains started to return from the dead.

Nyssa annulled her marriage to Oliver and set off on a mission with Thea and Roy. That was the conclusion of Thea’s arc on Arrow.

Willa Holland’s exit from the series was pretty darn obvious when you consider the fact that her presence on the show has diminished over the last few years.

What do you think of the big exit?

Janet Hubert: Original Aunt Viv Goes OFF Over Fresh Prince of Bel Air Reunion!

Janet Hubert, the actress who played the stylish, stunning, iconic original Aunt Vivian on Will Smith’s hit sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air, is officially pissed.

She’s also officially the only person on the planet who isn’t thrilled by the prospect of a Fresh Prince reunion.

A couple of days ago, Alfonso Ribeiro, the actor who played Will’s dorky cousin Carlton, shared this lovely photo on Instagram.

There’s the bulk of the cast of the show — Tatyana Ali (who played little Ashley), Alfonso, Karyn Parsons (Hilary), Will, Daphne Reid (the replacement Aunt Viv), and Joseph Marcell (Geoffrey).

The only person missing is Uncle Phil, the amazing James Avery who tragically passed away in 2013.

Alfonso noted his absence in the caption, writing “Always amazing to spend an afternoon with my Fresh Prince family. Wishing that James Avery was still with us to make this complete.”

So sweet, right?

Yeah, Janet doesn’t think so.

Janet, who left the show after three seasons due to “creative differences” (more on that in a bit), shared a scathing Facebook post about the reunion, just a really, incredibly nasty commentary on the photo.

“I know the media hoe Alphonso Ribero has posted his so called reunion photo,” she began the since-deleted post. “Folks keep telling me about it.”

“He was always the ass wipe for Will. There will never be a true reunion of the Fresh Prince. I have no interest in seeing any of these people on that kind of level.”

She added that she’s “not offended in the least” by the photo, but “it does however prompt me to take some meetings in Hollywood to pitch my memoir PERFECTION IS NOT A SITCOM MOM, and tell of the behind the scenes story before I leave this earth.”

It makes sense that Janet would lash out like this — she’s had issues with Will Smith and Alfonso Ribeiro for literal decades at this point.

Funnily enough, this isn’t even the first time she’s referred to someone as a “media hoe.” Stacey Dash got those same honors last year.

We may never know exactly what happened between Janet and the rest of the Fresh Prince cast, but we do know that in a 1993 interview, Will said that “no matter what, to her I’m just the Antichrist.”

He said that she wanted the show to be “The Aunt Viv of Bel Air Show,” and that she was mad that he got his own show so early in his career when she’d been acting for years.

In a 2009 stand-up show, Alfonso said that Janet “went nuts,” and that the cast felt like a family but she “ruined that, and she made it very difficult for us to work.”

But Janet has said that her issue with Will is that when it was time to negotiate pay raises for the cast, he refused to stand up for them, reportedly telling her “My deal is my deal and y’all’s deal is y’all’s deal.”

While we can’t know who’s to blame for the issues, it’s clear that Janet is the only one with problems — the rest of the cast clearly still love and respect each other.

What a shame.

John Berry Dies; Original Beastie Boys Member Was 52

John Berry, an original members of iconic rap group the Beastie Boys, passed away on Thursday at a hospice in Danvers, Massachusetts.

He was 52 years old.

The guitarist was credited by the band as the creator of its name.

He tragically suffered from frontal lobe dementia, however, which had grown worse in recent months, according to his father, John Berry III, via Rolling Stone.

Berry and Mike Diamond, who were classmates at the Walden School in New York, formed the Beastie Boys in July 1981 with Adam “MCA” Yauch and Kate Schellenbach.

The group’s first show even took place at Berry’s old loft at the corner of West 100th St. and Broadway on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City.

In 1982, not long after the release of their first EP, Berry and Schellenbach departed the Beasties Boys and were replaced by Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz.

Fast forward to 2012 and The Beastie Boys were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Along with Run-D.M.C. and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, they were just the third rap group to earn this distinction.

Among their most popular hits, many of which you can still hear on the radio today, were “Fight for Your Right,” “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” and “So What’Cha Want.”

Yauch died at age 47 after a long battle with cancer in late 2012.

In 2014, Diamond confirmed that the Beastie Boys would not continue out of respect for their late member.

We send our condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of John Berry.
