Shea Moisture Apologizes for Controversial Ad: We Really F--ked This One Up!

Shea Moisture isn’t often confused with PepsiCo.

But, like the soda giant just a few weeks ago, the beauty brand has been forced to issue an apology in the face of mounting criticism over an ad its long-time customer base finds very distasteful.

First, let’s take a look at the commercial in question:

As you can see, the spot opens with an African-American woman who says she was mocked throughout the years for her natural curls.

The video then transitions to a blonde woman who explains that she didn’t “know what to do” with her hair, followed by a redheaded woman complaining about dyeing her locks.

The overall message here is for people to “break free from hair hate.”

Unlike that horrid Kendall Jenner ad, It may be difficult to understand the controversy behind this commercial at first.

A bit of background helps:

The company was founded by Richelieu Dennis, who came to the United States from Liberia and who has always focused on women of color.

As a result, those who have used and followed Shea Moisture for years believe this spot is an example of the company turning its back on its roots in the black community.

Critics think the above commercial is an affront Shea’s core customer.

shea complaints

Others don’t fault Shea for certain aspects of the ad, but believe the company wasn’t really seeing the big picture:

shea haters

“Seeing Shea Moisture make a campaign trying to expand their brand to white people by getting rid of their target audience is upsetting,” wrote another user.

And these critiques didn’t fall on deaf ears.

In an usual move, not only did the company yank this commercial… it issued a detailed, honest, sort of hilarious mea culpa in response.

“Wow, okay – so guys, listen, we really f–ked this one up,” Shea wrote on Facebook, adding at length:

“Please know that our intention was not – and would never be – to disrespect our community, and as such, we are pulling this piece immediately because it does not represent what we intended to communicate.

“You guys know that we have always stood for inclusion in beauty and have always fought for our community and given them credit for not just building our business but for shifting the beauty landscape.”

The statement concluded:

While this campaign included several different videos showing different ethnicities and hair types to demonstrate the breadth of each individual’s hair journey, we must absolutely ensure moving forward that our community is well-represented in each one so that the women who have led this movement never feel that their hair journey is minimized in any way.

Thank you all, as always, for the honest and candid feedback. We hear you. We’re listening. We appreciate you. We count on you. And we’re always here for you.

Thank you, #SheaFam, for being there for us, even when we make mistakes. Here’s to growing and building together…

Real talking

Pretty good response, right?

The Facebook post above has been Liked nearly 6,000 times in just a few hours, so it looks as if the company is on the right track.

High School Apologizes for Sexist "Good Girl" Prom Posters

Move over, Florida Man.

Take a seat for a moment, Florida Woman.

It’s time to make room in the ridiculous news for… Florida School!

In a decision that has made it the target of ire across the Internet, Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville decided this year to institute a dress code for its senior prom.

By itself, this wasn’t a big deal.

Dress codes are not uncommon at private schools across the country.

But administrators also thought it would be a good idea last week to put hallway fliers up that instructed female students on what sort of dresses would and would not be acceptable at the dance.

Each poster asked the question “Going to Stanton Prom?” above a different gown with various levels of skin exposure.

Photos of the more revealing dresses then answered this question with the statement “NO YOU’RE NOT” written under them.

Under the one dress deemed properly conservative by those in charge?

“YES YOU ARE. GOOD GIRL.”

And that’s mostly where the school went way wrong here.

Demanding that students adhere to a certain dress code? Fine. Whatever. It’s been done before.

But to talk to a female as if she’s a dog (You’re a good girl, yes you are!) and to insinuate that someone who wears a dress with a low back is a “bad girl?”

What the heck was the school thinking?!?

As you might expect, social media reaction to these posters was swift and harsh.

To wit:

In addition to writing messages such as this and voicing their disgust online, students wore purple and white to school on Tuesday in protest of the flyers.

They used the hashtag “#scpgoodgirl” to build support for their cause.

And, fortunately, is actually worked!

Forced to confront its insensitive handling of the dress code, the administration issued the following statement:

The display of prom dress photos pertaining to recommended attire at Stanton College Preparatory School is not an approved policy by the school or Duval County Public Schools. The displayed images were immediately removed by school leadership on Monday.

Both students and staff have been informed this was not acceptable or appropriate guidance for prom dress attire.

Action News Jax even reports the principal apologized to students, directly.

“Please do accept my apology for this poor delivery of information,” he said. “Our intent is to make sure prom is enjoyable and memorable.”

Stanton College Preparatory High School’s Gender-Sexuality Alliance Tweeted (below) about the positive result on Tuesday and included an important message for all to learn from on its account.

“We must all stand in solidarity against sexism, racism, homophobia, Islamaphobia and all forms of ignorance, hate, and/or fear, no matter how big or small the faith appears to be.”

What happened today, the group wrote on reference to the school’s apology, was “incredible.”

We concur!

We wish such coming-together by the student body and others associated with the school wasn’t necessary in the first place.

But we’re inspired by the efforts made on behalf of a worthwhile cause by these upstanding young people.

Rod Stewart Apologizes for Mock Execution Video

Rod Stewart has issued an apology for starring in a video that appears to make fun of ISIS-led executions.

(There"s a sentence we did not expect to write today.)

In the controversial footage, Stewart, his wife Penny and some friends are hiking in the desert outside Abu Dhabi.

When they reach the top of a sand dune, one of the members of this party kneels down in front of Stewart, who then pretends to chop the man"s head off.

It"s rather shocking and disturbing to witness.

Shared online by Penny, the video was deleted not long after raising the ire of many people on the Internet.

In light of this understandable backlash, Stewart has released a mea culpa that reads as follows:

"From re-enacting the Beatles" Abbey Road crossing to spontaneously playing out Game Of Thrones, we were simply larking about pre-show.

"Understandably, this has been misinterpreted and I send my deepest apologies to those who have been offended."

Some critics don"t believe this is enough, however.

They are calling for Stewart to be stripped of his Knighthood, which he was awarded in 2016. (See photo below.)

Former hostage John McCarthy, for example, told BBC Radio that the artist had turned "a grotesque thing into a kind of pantomime."

The journalist – who was kidnapped in Lebanon in 1986 – added that it was unclear whether Stewart was "larking about" or even realized what he was doing. Or how it might be interpreted.

Jenna Bush Hager Apologizes for Golden Globes Gaffe

Jenna Bush Hager has an issued an apology for her embarrassing snafu at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.

Prior to Jimmy Fallon taking the stage and opening the ceremony in very unfunny fashion, the former First Daughter (working as a Today Show correspondent) stopped on the red carpet to chat with Pharrell Williams.

Referring to the film for which he recorded a song, Hager began her question for the artist by saying the following:

“So, you’re nominated for Hidden Fences…”

Pharrell is NOT nominated for “Hidden Fences.”

He’s nominated for a movie titled “Hidden Figures.”

(In Hager’s defense, there was another Golden Globes-nominated movie titled “Fences,” and Michael Keaton made this same mistake while on stage at the event.)

Pharrell didn’t correct Hager when she made her gaffe, though you can tell he REALLY wants to in the clip above.

Many Twitter users, however, were not about to let this snafu go – largely due to the identity of Hager’s father and his history in dealing with African-Americans.

Here is a sampling of their reactions:

hager tweets

Fighting back tears, Hager responded to this controversy on Monday’s Today show.

“If I offended people, I am deeply sorry,” she told viewers, adding:

“It was a mistake… What I didn’t want to do is make anyone feel lesser than who they are. It was a mistake and I hope we can all move on.”

Al Roker – who was seated alongside Hager as she delivered her apology – defended his co-worker before going off on the mentality of social media and the media itself.

“Honest mistakes happen in live television,” the famous weatherman said.

“And this culture of Twitter and people waiting to pounce on people — it’s gotta stop. It’s just ridiculous… And for the New York Times to repeat these tweets, it’s a cheap shot.”

Watch Hager’s mea culpa below:

Fortunately for Hager, her mistake was overshadowed by a few other happenings at the Golden Globes.

There was Meryl Streep tearing into Donald TrumpRyan Gosling expressing his love and admiration for Eva Mendes… and Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell being totally hilarious.

Relive the most memorably Golden Globes moment here:

And then sound off:

Should Hager have apologized?

Do you buy her apology?

Was this much ado about nothing?

Or should we be making an even bigger deal out of her slip-up?

Soulja Boy Apologizes For Chris Brown Feud After His Mom Gets Pissed

Soulja Boy … Tell ‘Em you’re sorry, said the rapper’s mother following the events of this week, and like any good son, he took her words to heart.

We’re serious. Soulja apologized for “acting out” in a Twitter feud with Chris Brown after his recently hospitalized parent expressed disappointment.

“I know she’s not proud of my actions and what I’ve been doing recently” Soulja Boy, 26, explained. “I wanna make music with Chris Brown.”

“To all the media, to all the blogs, to all my homies from the hood that feel like I been on some hot boy s–t, I apologize. I’m back to the music.”

Quite a reversal from 24 hours earlier.

An epic Chris Brown-Soulja Boy feud broke out Monday night after the “Crank That” rapper liked an Instagram pic of Karrueche Tran.

Karrueche dated Chris on and off for four years until 2015, and to say their romance was mercurial would be an understatement.

So much so that it sparked this:

“Chris brown just called me and said he wanna fight me,” Soulja Boy wrote on Twitter Monday before launching into a profane tirade.

Accusing Chris of drug use, he wrote “Aye @chrisbrown pull up n—a I’ll knock yo Bitch A– out stop snorting so much coke n—a. FRUITS.”

Fruits refers to the Fruit Town Pirus, a gang that Chris has long been associated with, though we’re told he is not an “initiated” member.

Soulja bashed Chris for beating Rihanna, to which Brown later replied that “this s–t is beneath me” … but that he would f–k ya Boy up.

Karrueche also spoke out in a since-deleted Instagram post: “This drama between the both of these two is so ridiculous it makes no sense.”

Chris’ response to that? Pretty vile:

CB Tweetin

The beef continued on Tuesday when Soulja Boy started an Instagram Live broadcast while walking around Compton with his friends.

Chatting with his followers, the rapper initially appeared to get jumped by a man shouting “They say Soulja Boy ain’t from the hood.”

However, another angle of the video surfaced and showed that Soulja did appear to get robbed, but threw his phone onto the ground.

We got nothing, but his friend DJ Akademiks then shared a video of himself and his crew wielding guns and shouting, “F–k you, Chris Brown.”

Brown’s crew had previously shared a similar, gun-toting video directed at Soulja, who alleged that Brown leaked his phone number online.

You can’t make this stuff up.

“That’s a bitch move I got his number but didn’t do that. He’s the definition of a F–K BOY,” Soulja tweeted. “Chris brown can never go to my hood.”

“It’s been two years since he pulled up on my block. Facts. The best is yet to come. You’ll regret sleeping on me someday.”

“Don’t trade respect for attention.”

“Say what you feel. It’s not being rude, it’s called being real. Chris shouldn’t have call my phone crying about a girl that don’t want him.”

“Now he gotta see these hands. Bitch ass n—a,” he continued, though the rapper’s mom apparently got through to him at that point.

His Instagram has since been deleted; Brown has yet to respond to Soulja’s apology, though his most recent tweet changed the subject.

Promising to stay positive, from now on, Chris is chilling with daughter Royalty, who he calls “THE ONLY LIGHT IN MY DARKNESS.”

All’s well that ends well?

Cinnabon Apologizes for Monumentally Tasteless Carrie Fisher Tweet

Carrie Fisher is dead.

And Cinnabon is very sorry.

The unhealthy food chain has issued a mea culpa a day after it responded to the death of this acting icon by Tweeting an image of Fisher that included a pastry in her hair and an inappropriate message as a caption.

Like, a REALLY inappropriate message.

“RIP Carrie Fisher,” the questionable Tweet read.

And if it had stopped there, we would not be writing about Cinnabon at the moment.

But it continued by saying “you’ll always have the best buns in the galaxy.”

And then the eatery went ahead and imposed a cinnamon bun over an image of Fisher as Princess Leia.

See the tasteless Tweet in its entirety below:

There’s nothing necessarily wrong with using humor to cope with death, of course.

Heck, the reason many people loved Fisher with such passion was largely due to her flippant attitude; the way she, herself, relied on a sense of humor to deal with such weighty issues as alcoholism and bipolarity.

But it’s one thing to try and lighten the mood with a joke.

It’s another thing to use someone’s death as an excuse to push your brand.

In light of criticism from all over the Internet, Cinnabon deleted the above post and Tweeted the following apology.

“Our deleted tweet was genuinely meant as a tribute, but we shouldn’t have posted it. We are truly sorry.”

Earlier this week, Alec Baldwin also got in trouble for his response to Fisher’s death.

The actor, who worked with Fisher on an episode of 30 Rock, also referenced the passing of George Michael in his message, while continuing his feud with Donald Trump.

“Death comes in threes,” Baldwin wrote, jokingly adding:

“Carrie Fisher George Michael The integrity of the Oval Office.”

Many Internet users went off on Baldwin for incorporating a political message into his tribute. We can understand where that reaction came from.

But Steve Martin was also forced to delete his tribute to Fisher, simply because it mentioned her looks.

“When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen,” the veteran comedian and actor wrote after Fisher’s death, adding:

“She turned out to be witty and bright as well.”

Many outlets and fans somehow turned on Martin for supposedly having a sexist undertone to his message. New York Magazine wrote an entire article about it.

Does that not seem completely ridiculous?!?

Steve Martin actually knew Carrie Fisher.

Who is anyone out there to tell him how to mourn the loss of his friend?

Moreover, the entire point of his Tweet was that Fisher was not just some “beautiful creature.”

Seriously, this Fake Outrage culture has got to go. Does anyone familiar with Fisher possibly think she’d have taken umbrage to what Martin wrote?

Many out there think she even would have embraced Cinnabon’s online joke, as you can see in a few of the responses we’ve included below:

fisher defense

It’s hard enough that so many of our entertainment icons are dying.

The least we can do during this difficult time is be kind to each other, isn’t it? Sheesh.
