Sue Grafton Dies; Beloved Mystery Writer Was 77
For millions of readers, the alphabet now ends with “y.”
Perhaps that’s a fitting tribute to a woman who devoted her life to entertaining the masses with perplexing mysteries.
Sue Grafton, the author best known for the Kinsey Milhone “alphabet mysteries” has passed away at the age of 77.
She had reportedly been battling cancer.
Grafton came to readers’ attention in 1982 with the first Milhone book, A Is for Alibi.
It took her five years to write the book, and sales were sluggish at first.
Grafton didn’t publish the second book in the series until, B Is for Burglar until 1985.
Shortly after the book hit stores, a glowing review in Newsweek forever altered the course of Grafton’s life and career:
“It just undid me,” the author said in an interview.
“‘Gosh, someone’s paying attention.’ Then I started doing a book a year.”
Yes, from 1985 on, Grafton has published a new Milhone mystery every single year.
Her latest, Y is for Yesterday was released in August of this year.
In one of her final interviews, Grafton stated that she was looking forward to completing the series:
“I think it will be interesting to have a day and a week and a month and a year that isn’t already spoken for,” she said.
“The last, actually, 38 years, I’ve known exactly what I’m doing next. And this is a little moment of freedom – if I can come up with a storyline for Z is for Zero, which remains to be seen.”
Sadly, readers will never find out what Grafton had in store for the series’ conclusion.
Her loved ones say the author abhorred the ideas of ghostwriters and adaptations, and they’ll honor her wishes to be the only one at the helm of the Milhone series.
News of Grafton’s passing was made public today, via a loving tribute posted on social media by her daughter Jamie:
“I am sorry to tell you all that Sue passed away last night after a two year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family, including her devoted and adoring husband Steve,” the post reads.
“Although we knew this was coming, it was unexpected and fast. She had been fine up until just a few days ago, and then things moved quickly.
“Sue always said that she would continue writing as long as she had the juice. Many of you also know that she was adamant that her books would never be turned into movies or TV shows, and in that same vein, she would never allow a ghost writer to write in her name.
“Because of all of those things, and out of the deep abiding love and respect for our dear sweet Sue, as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.”
Tributes from tens of thousands of readers have made Grafton one of day’s top trending topics on Twitter.

Meghan Markle: Controversial Writer Pens Tell-All, Uses Phrase "Markle Sparkle"
In the span of just a few short years, Meghan Markle has gone from Deal or No Deal “briefcase girl” to star of a USA network legal drama to future royalty.
It’s a trajectory that’s sure to inspire both misty-lensed Hallmark Channel romances and 99 cent erotic e-books with titles like The Finger Prince.
We don’t blame the public for being fascinated with Meghan’s story.
We all like to think we’ll be saved from our desperate, mediocre lives when someone with tremendous power and influence recognizes how special we are.
Basically, Meghan is Harry Potter and Harry is Dumbledore and … well, we won’t get into the importance of knowing how to work a wand in both stories, but you get the idea.
The point of that confusing and oddly profane metaphor is that Meghan and Harry’s romance is the stuff of bestsellers.
But it won’t be J.K. Rowling telling the tale.
No, it appears the first to cash in on the international Harkle obsession will be British writer Andrew Morton, a provocateur who’s previously authored biographies on Tom Cruise, Madonna, and Angelina Jolie.
Somehow, not having not been smothered to death by the avalanche of smug that came from researching those three, Morton lived to tell tell the tale of Harry’s mother, Princess Di, in a bestseller titled Diana: Her Story.
Despite the fact that the book was based largely on a secretly recorded conversation between Diana and a friend, Morton was able to secure the late princess’ approval of the project.
In other words, this is a dude who knows where the bodies are buried, and now he’s coming for MegMar:
“I was a fan of Meghan’s long before she met Prince Harry,” British writer Andrew Morton wrote to Fox News.
“She has star quality, what some have called ‘the Markle Sparkle."”
As a man who has the sack to use the phrase “Markle Sparkle” publicly, you can bet that Morton won’t shy away from all the gritty details of Meghan’s 36 years.
Or, he’ll just engage in 400-plus pages of ass-kissing, because the royals have basically made his career.
Based on his comments on the project, we’re guessing it’s the latter:
“Confident, groomed and camera ready, she is a dramatic contrast to the blushing, coy royal brides of recent history,” Morton recently told Fox News
“The warmth and affection Meghan and Harry displayed during their engagement interview years is light years away from the stilted ‘whatever love means’ conversation with Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.”
Morton added:
“Meghan is an exciting and genuinely charismatic addition to the royal family – she makes the House of Windsor seem relevant again. Hers is a fascinating story and I can’t wait to tell it.”
Basically, it sounds like dude is a living Instagram filter.
His version of Meghan has a flower crown and shoots out rays of angelic light when she smiles.
So yeah, you may have to wait a bit longer for Markle to get the warts-and-all treatment.
Or you can just go ahead and download The Finger Prince to your Kindle.
We’re not here to judge.

Frank Deford Dies; Legendary Sports Writer Was 78
Frank Deford, one of the most prolific and beloved sports writers of all-time died on Sunday in Key West, Florida.
He was 78 years old.
According to The Washington Post, Deford’s wife has confirmed this sad piece of news, although other details related to the death are unknown at this time.
Deford got his start as a Sports Illustrated staff member in 1962 and was serving as a senior editor emeritus for the national publication at the time of his passing.
The beloved literary figure also worked with NPR’s Morning Edition for 32 years, having retired earlier this month following his 1,656th NPR commentary.
Over the course of a truly memorable career, Deford…
… wrote 17 books.
… Worked as a contributor on HBO’s “Real Sports” franchise.
… And was the editor of the National Sports Daily.
He was elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters and has been voted by his peers as the U.S. Sportswriter of the Year six times.
In 2013, as pictured below, President Barack Obama presented the writer with the National Humanities Medal.
Said the Commander-in-Chief of Deford at the time:
“A dedicated writer and storyteller, Mr. Deford has offered a consistent, compelling voice in print and on radio, reaching beyond scores and statistics to reveal the humanity woven into the games we love.”
Aside from the work that made him famous across every sports landscape, Deford served as the national chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation after his first daughter, Alex, died of the disease at the age of eight.
Not long after Deford’s death was announced, numerous reporters took to Twitter in order to express their condolences.
Here is a sampling of what they wrote:
Upon leaving NPR this year, Deford said the following:
“The wonderful thing about delivering sports commentary on NPR was that because it has such a broad audience, I was able to reach people who otherwise had little or no interest in sport – especially as an important part of our human culture.
“Nothing made me happier than to hear from literally hundreds of listeners who would tell me how much the commentaries revealed about a subject they otherwise had never cared much for.
“I’ll forever be grateful to NPR that they gave me such extraordinary freedom. … It was 37 years of a fond relationship.”
In 2012, Deford became the first person from the world of sports to receive the W.M. Kiplinger Distinguished Contributions to Journalism Award, the National Press Foundation’s highest honor.
That same year, he became the first magazine writer to win the Associated Press Sports Editors’ Red Smith Award.
Then, in 2013, the University of Kansas presented him with the William Allen White Foundation National Citation for “excellence in journalism.”
Dedord is survived by his wife and two grown children.
May he rest in peace.

Katie Rich: Saturday Night Live Writer Suspended, Apologetic for Barron Trump Tweet
Katie Rich says she’s very sorry for going way overboard when it comes to Barron Trump.
But the Saturday Night Live writer issued her mea culpa long after her controversial Tweet went public and she got suspended by producers as a result.
Rich has worked for SNL since 2013, writing exclusively these days for the show’s famous Weekend Update segment.
During Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday afternoon, she jumped on social media and wrote the President’s 10-year old son:
Barron will be this country’s first homeschool shooter.
Yeah. She went there. Is it any wonder this so-called joke led to severe backlash against Rich?
You can easily argue that any comment about Barron Trump is off-limits, considering his age and considering he has nothing to do with his father’s personality or politics.
But a quip about the kid growing up to shoot up a school? YIKES.
Rich deleted the Tweet a few hours after it went viral, but it was way too little and most definitely too late.
According to Deadline, Rich was not listed in the credits for this past Saturday’s episode and is on “indefinite” suspension.
She has since made her Twitter account private and written the following apology:
I sincerely apologize for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I’m so sorry.
The issue of leaving Barron Trump alone has become a significant one in the days since his father was sworn in as President of the United States.
Modern Family actress Julie Bowen, for example, got in trouble as well on Friday for live-blogging the inauguration and focusing many of her comments on Barron.
Even though none of her cracks were really at Barron’s expense. They just used his expressions as a way to slam his controversial father.
But the topic of First Children has always been off-limits across the aisle.
For all the negative things critics have said over the years about Barack Obama, no one in any position of respect or authority dared to say a word about Sasha or Malia.
After learning about the cyberbullying that was aimed at Barron, Monica Lewinsky actually came to the defense of Donald’s youngest son.
The ex-mistress of Bill Clinton has made it her mission to take on cyberbullying, following all the flak she took back in the day for her affair with the former President.
“All children need to be protected from bullying + mockery. (incl #barrontrump). let’s be better than this,” Lewinsky Tweeted Monday.
Melania Trump has also said her main platform as First Lady will be to speak out strongly and to create some kind of movement against online harassment.
(We assume she’ll start with her husband.)
Chelsea Clinton, who was only 12 years old when she first moved into the White House and whose mother was nearly elected in November, also came to the defense of Barron Trump on social media.
She wrote:
“Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does-to be a kid. Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids.”
Perfectly said, don’t you agree?
Aim your wrath at the man who deserve it, Donald Trump.
Leave his young kid alone.

Thomas Gibson Suspended from Criminal Minds After Kicking Writer
Thomas Gibson has been suspended from his job.
The veteran Criminal Minds actor reportedly got into a physical altercation with a producer not very long ago, resulting in a two-week suspension from shooting.
According to TMZ, Gibson actually kicked this producer/writer in the leg over what is being described as a “creative dispute.”
Let no one ever say Thomas Gibson isn’t passionate about his job, we guess.
And also that he may have a serious anger management problem.
Insiders tell TMZ that the actor was directing and acting in a scene a few weeks back ago when this incident took place.
An argument ensued, which is not unusual on the set of a TV show… only this argument escalated and resulted in Gibson taking out his frustrations in a violent manner.
The writer proceeded to call his agent, who called the suits at CBS.
The network therefore had no choice but to take action,
It’s unclear for how long Gibson is suspended, but it’s been two weeks already.
The actor has played Aaron Hotchner on the smash hit CBS drama since 2005.
He doesn’t deny that something happened on set that day, telling TMZ in a statement:
“There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred. We all want to work together as a team to make the best show possible.
“We always have and always will.”
Criminal Minds is currently in production on the fourth episode of Season 12. It will return with new episodes on Wednesday, September 28 at 9/8c.
Oddly enough, CBS faced a similar situation in 2013 when former CSI star George Eads got into an on-set altercation with a writer.
The actor was subsequently written off the series for several episodes.
As those who watch Criminal Minds online know, however, Gibson is one of the show’s main leads.
He has also directed a number of memorable Criminal Minds episodes, including “The Night Watch,” “Lockdown,” “Boxed In,” “Gabby” and “All That Remains.”
Gibson has been nominated for two Golden Globes over his career, both times for his performance on the sitcom Dharma & Greg..
Yup, Gibson used to be funny!
But there’s nothing humorous about what he did here.
