Artie Lange: Comic Reportedly Near Death Following Years of Addiction
If you’re a fan of Artie Lange, then you probably know the beloved comedian, radio personality, and podcast host isn’t exactly Joe Rogan when it comes to clean living.
Lange has struggled with addiction and other health issues for most of his adult life, and he’s been refreshingly candid about the toll that a decades-long cycle of rehab and relapses has taken on his body.
Now, following a string of canceled gigs and some troubling tweets, fans are worried that Lange’s years of recklessness may soon cost him his life.
The 50-year-old canceled a scheduled appearance on his webseries The Artie & Anthony Show this week, and his explanation has sparked serious concern:
“The AA show is the best job! I really have the flu. I got a flu shot! I got the flu. Antibiotics are working &I plan on being in tomm. Anthony & I are good on air,” Lange tweeted
“Please stick w us. I will make this work! U fans must feel I’m like a loser cousin u tolerate. Thx for that.”
Several followers pointed out that antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, not viruses like the flu.
Still, Lange simply may have been mistaken about what sort of treatment he was receiving.
The comic initially seemed optimistic about his condition, but later tweets led fans to the conclusion that his illness is more serious than he let on at first:
“Doctor seemed worried. Took blood. I promise if I die it will be on the AA show. Howard used to beg me to agree to this! I refused. This is special. I’m willing to put it in a contract. If u think I’m joking u did not see the look on my Drs face,” Lange tweeted yesterday.
He elaborated in a way that did little to assuage his fans’ greatest fears:
“Also with regards to my appearance. Fans. Followers. (whatever the f-ck ppl call themselves today) I’ve crossed some sort of disgusting line. I will most likely never look good again. The best I can do is try not to make anyone vomit! My body has been ravished by awful living. Thx.”
Lange later re-tweeted a follower who suggested that he may have meant that his appearance had been “ravaged.”
In an interview with Radar Online, Artie’s mother, Judy Lange, confirmed that his situation is dire:
“Artie has to take care of a few things. He’s got diabetes, so that doesn’t help. He’s okay, as much as he can be. But he is fighting addiction — trying to get through that, and hopefully he will,” Judy told the outlet.
“He told me he went to the doctors, but I haven’ t received a report yet from him as to what’s going on. So I don’t know,” she added.
Lange first checked into rehab back in 1997, when he was a cast member on the sketch comedy series Mad TV.
In the decades that followed, he sobered up several times, but slipped back into addiction just as often.
In 2010, Lange attempted suicide by drinking bleach and stabbing himself in the abdomen several times.
It was not the first time he had attempted to take his own life.
Lange survived the incident after being found unconscious by his mother, and he returned to his job on The Howard Stern Show after being released from the hospital.
Lange has enjoyed a career renaissance recently thanks to his roles on The AA Show and the Judd Apatow HBO series Crashing.
We wish Artie and his loved ones all the best.

Bill Cosby Courtroom Shocker: Could the Comic Be Headed to Jail?
Last week, the long-awaited Bill Cosby sexual assault trial got underway, and the world looked on in anticipation of the disgraced TV legend finally answering for the dozens of rape and sexual harassment allegations against him.
After initially stating that Cosby would not testify, his lawyers changed course and stated that he likely would take the stand on his own behalf.
But today, in a bizarre twist, Cosby’s defense team rested its case after just six minutes, and the 79-year-old alleged predator was never called to the stand.
Instead Cosby’s lawyers called just one repeat witness to the stand for further questioning and left it to the jury to decide if accusations made by Andrea Constand are truthful are not.
Cosby himself read a sworn statement informing the court that he would not be testifying, but believed that he would be vindicated by the facts presented by his lawyers.
Again, those would be the facts that his crack legal team presented in six minutes.
It’s possible that the decision not to have Cosby testify was motivated by the fact that the jury has already heard his side of the story – and it wasn’t exactly helpful to his cause:
Statements made to police in 2005 and transcripts from a 2006 legal deposition were both read in court.
In both, Cosby describes the woman he allegedly victimized in a cold, detached fashion, describing his likes and dislikes in a way that’s likely to send a shiver up your spine or trigger a violent bout of nausea:
“We began to pet. Touching and kissing with clothes on,” Cosby said under oath, describing what he says was a consensual sexual encounter with Constand.
“I never intended to have full intercourse, like naked bodies, with Andrea … I don’t like it. I like the petting, the touching.”
Like we said, not exactly the type of stuff that endears you to a jury a of your peers.
Cosby stands accused of drugging and raping Constand after meeting her at an event at Temple University in 2004.
If he’s convicted, he could be sentenced to up to ten years behind bars.
We’ll have further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

Charlie Murphy Dies; Beloved Comic Was 57
Charlie Murphy, the brother of Eddie Murphy, who’s perhaps best known for his appearances on the iconic Comedy Central sketch series Chappelle’s Show, has passed away at the age of 57.
The news was confirmed today in a statement from Murphy’s publicist.
Sources close to the comic say he passed in a New York City hospital while undergoing chemo.
Murphy had been battling leukemia for an undisclosed period of time.
Murphy racked up more than 50 film and television credits during his more than 30 years in the industry, but it was his performance on Chappelle’s Show that made him a household name to a new generation of comedy fans.
In two of the show’s most famous sketches, Murphy recounted real-life tales of encounters with Rick James and Prince, respectively.
In both cases, Murphy both narrated and helped to reenact the experiences, which included a memorable basketball game against the Purple One and a years-long conflict with James.
Murphy went on to host the show’s “lost episodes” alongside co-star Donnell Rawlings, following Dave Chappelle’s abrupt departure in 2005.
In addition to his time on Chappelle’s show, Murphy appeared in a number of beloved film and television comedies, including CB4, The Boondocks, and the culishly adored Adult Swim series Black Jesus.
An accomplished standup comic, Murphy toured the US with Cedric the Entertainer, Eddie Griffin, George Lopez and D.L. Hughley just months before his death.
Though it’s only been moments since news of Murphy’s death was announced, the comic is already the number one trending topic on Twitter, with numerous legends of entertainment paying tribute to a man that many consider one of the great comedic minds of his day.
Many have sadly noted that the three stars of what are arguably Chappelle’s most beloved sketches (Murphy, Prince, and James) have all passed on.
Just last week, Murphy paid tribute to Prince on social media, tweeting:
“Can’t believe it’s been almost a year!? RIP to the Purple One.”
Murphy is survived by three children.
He was married to Tisha Taylor Murphy from 1997 until her death from cancer in 2009.

Don Rickles Dies; Legendary Comic Was 90
Don Rickles, the legendary comic who turned the insult into an art form, has passed away at the age of 90.
His publicist confirmed the news in a statement issued to the media moments ago.
While longevity eludes most comics due to changing tastes in humor, Rickles remained a stalwart in the standup scene for an astonishing six decades.
Often cited as a top influence by today’s biggest comedians, Rickles made a career out of skewering public figures, fellow entertainers, his own audience, and even himself.
His impact can be seen everywhere from sharp-tongued sitcom characters to the popular Comedy Central Roast series.
Rickles didn’t invent insult comedy, but he may have done more to popularize it than anyone else.
Rickles kicked off his career in New York nightclubs during the 1950s, eventually gaining such a name for himself as the master put-down that he became a sought-after act to perform for and alongside the biggest names in show business.
In the ’60s, Rickles became a fixture in Las Vegas, and was frequently spotted partying with Frank Sinatra and his famous Rat Pack.
In addition to standup, Rickles became a familiar face to generations of film and television fans.
Though his own attempts at launching a series never panned out, he racked up scores of TV credits over the years.
Rickles was a fixture on the late night talk show circuit from the time of its inception and played guest roles on sitcoms such as Get Smart, Newhart and, in 2011, Hot in Cleveland, and Murphy Brown.
He also showed off his dramatic chops in films such as Martin Scorsese’s Casino, and earned a new generation of fans with his voice work as Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story films.
Social media tributes to Rickles from fans, friends and fellow comics began pouring in within minutes of the announcement of his death:
“Hey Helen Keller, show’s up here. Gandhi, stop hogging the breadsticks or we’ll let Bob Hope tell jokes again,” Patton Oswalt tweeted, paying tribute to Rickles’ scathing style.
“A national treasure is gone. Don Rickles’ talent was limitless. To know him was a gift,” wrote Larry King.
Rickles is survived by his wife of 52 years, his two children, and two grandchildren.
