Ree Drummond, Food Network Star, Dragged for Apparent Racism and Dumb Jokes

Ree Drummond is known as The Pioneer Woman.

That’s the name of her popular show on The Food Network.

But some viewers now think Drummond should be referred to instead as the Racist and Wildly Inappropriate Woman, based on a few remarks she’s recently made.

The long-time celebrity chef has stirred up controversy on multiple fronts of late, starting with a very strange blog post in which she said her individuality stemmed from the fact she had a “black grandpa.”

Except she didn’t.

There’s no record of any African-American relatives on Drummond’s family tree.

“In the same bizarre post, she went on to admit that he was actually white and [claimed] she thought he was African-American most of her life because of his tan,” wrote In Touch Weekly of Ree’s initial assessment and then strange admission.

Based on this logic, Drummond must also think George Hamilton is black.

The blog post in question has since been deleted.

But those who read it or heard about it were understandably ticked off that Drummond basically compared a tan white person to a black person.

Elsewhere, Drummond penned another blog post in which she allegedly referred to her developmentally disabled brother Mike as “retarded.”

We can’t verify for certain whether or not this word was actually used in conjunction with her sibling.

If so, however… YIKES!

Finally, there’s the matter of a quip we can definitely verify – because it took place during an episode of Drummond’s Food Network program.

While serving some hot wings to a bunch of friends, Drummond joked that they were not barbecue flavored, but actually “Asian” flavored instead.

The friends stood in confused silence over this description, prompting Ree to say she was just kidding around.

But it was a random joke that did not go over well with certain fans at all.

hating on ree

“I was already bummed by the lack of diversity on @foodnetwork Now @thepioneerwoman & co. are on there saying they don’t trust “asian” food??” Tweeted one irate user.

Drummond has been in the national picture for a long time.

She has appeared over the years on Good Morning America, The Today Show, The View, The Chew and The Bonnie Hunt Show.

She has also been featured in Ladies’ Home Journal, Woman’s Day, People and Southern Living.

Her first cookbook, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl, was published in October 2009 and she has gone on to pen many more since then.

After taking on the host during an episode of Throwdown! With Bobby Flay in 2010, Drummond was given her own Food Network show a year later.

What do you think of the controversies cited above?

Worthy of criticism leveled against Drummond? Or much ado over mostly nothing?

Michelle Rounds Dead of Apparent Suicide; Ex Wife of Rosie O"Donnell Was 46

Michelle Rounds, the ex-wife of media personality Rosie O’Donnell, has passed away at the age of 46.

Though no official cause of death has been announced, TMZ is reporting that Rounds appears to have taken her own life.

Rounds had been open about her struggles with mental illness over the years, and tragically, it seems the battle proved fatal.

After meeting at an industry event in 2011, Rounds and O’Donnell got married the following year.

Their time together was turbulent, marred by frequent fighting and Rounds’ persistent health issues.

But there were bright spots, as well.

O’Donnell and Rounds welcomed a daughter together in 2013, and Michelle described the months that followed as the happiest in her life.

Sadly, it was a period that wouldn’t last.

Rounds and O’Donnell separated in 2015 after months of intense fighting.

Just months later Rounds attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription painkillers.

She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors were able to save her life.

Though Rounds moved on to a new and reportedly far less tumultuous relationship, it seems she was never able to escape her demons.

After was said to be a period of emotional stability, Rounds reportedly experienced a recurrence of symptoms in recent weeks.

O’Donnell issued a statement on her former wife’s death just moments ago:

“I am saddened to hear about this terrible tragedy,” O’Donnell wrote.

“Mental illness is a very serious issue affecting many families. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle’s family, her wife and their child.”

They though often fought bitterly during their marriage, O’Donnell and Rounds reportedly worked out an amicable co-parenting relationship after their divorce.

Michelle’s mother also released a statement and seems to have implicitly verified that Rounds had taken her own life:

“If anyone would like to give to the National Suicide Prevention it would also be greatly appreciated,” wrote Michelle’s mother.

“There are so many out there in this world that have demons that they think suicide is the only way out.”

Though O’Donnell and Rounds’ marriage was short, the couples’ dramatic fights and outspoken stances on topical issues briefly made Rounds a staple in the tabloid media.

As a result, many celebrities and media figures have taken to social media to mourn Michelle’s passing.

“Such a devastating loss. Sending so much strength and peace to her loved ones,” Perez Hilton tweeted, along with a link to an article about Rounds’ death.

Though she worked as a consultant for most of her adult life, Rounds easy charm and quick wit made her a popular figure in Rosie’s circle of celebrity friends.

In a bit of tragic irony, her death comes during Suicide Prevention Month.

Rounds is now the latest in a disturbingly long line of celebrity suicides.

The steadily-worsening epidemic dates back to Robin Williams’ unexpected passing in 2014.

Recent victims such as rock stars Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington have brought new attention to the issue.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from thoughts of self-harm, we urge you to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Please don’t delay.

Our thoughts go out to Rounds’ family during this tremendously difficult time.

Hank Deutschendorf, Ghostbusters II Star, Dead of Apparent Suicide

Hank Deutschendorf, a former child actor best known for his role in Ghostbusters II, was found dead at his home in California on June 14.

He was 29 years old.

This sad piece of news has been confirmed by Hank’s twin brother, William, who co-starred with his sibling as a baby named Oscar in the aforementioned 1989 movie.

Both very young at the time, the brothers portrayed the son of Sigourney Weaver’s character in the popular sequel.

They are also the nephews of musician John Denver.

According to multiple outlets, William tragically discovered Hank’s body in the apartment Hank shared with his girlfriend in Escondido.

The official coroner’s report states that a “a single, 29-year-old Caucasian male” who resided where he died was “found suspended by a ligature around his neck in his closet by his brother.”

Continues this same report:

“After cutting him down, 9-1-1 was called and first responders arrived at the home. His death was then confirmed without medical interventions due to signs of rigidity.

“He had a long history of depression.”

baby oscar

Via a lengthy blog post, William confirmed the passing of his brother and talked about him in moving detail.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my twin brother, Hank,” wrote the distraught sibling, explaining:

“On Wednesday, June 14th, 2017, Henry John Deutschendorf II lost his battle with schizoaffective disorder.”

William then made a point to introduce Hank to the world, while simultaneously saying goodbye.

“Many people do not know much about Hank. Some knew him as Baby Oscar in Ghostbusters II or John Denver’s nephew. Others knew him as a brother, son, martial artist, teacher, uncle, or friend.

“What people do not know about Hank was that he suffered from schizoaffective disorder. It is a chronic mental health condition which is a combination of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

“He experienced hallucinations, delusions, depression, and mania.”

Hank appeared as himself in a 2017 documentary about Ghostbusters titled Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters.

But he mostly remained out of the spotlight following his young foray into acting.

ghostbusters scene

Added William in tribute:

“It is a very severe mental illness that usually requires a lifetime of treatment. It is not well studied, so the treatment is largely an estimation based on schizophrenia and bipolar treatments.

“Hank was diagnosed in August of 2008.”

The illness changed Hank in numerous ways, most notably when it came to his personality and his general state of mind.

“If you knew Hank before his diagnosis, you knew a young man who was upbeat, healthy, witty, kind, outgoing, and was always ready to stand up for people.

“Medication curbed the delusions but it did not stop the voices,” wrote William, who concluded:

“The side effects of the medication took a toll on Hank. He felt like a zombie, lost his personality, gained weight quickly, slept for twelve hours a day, and had to use all of his willpower just to lift his hand to drink a cup of water.

“My brother was left with a Band-Aid for a gunshot wound…

“His girlfriend will remember him as someone who made her feel like the most important person in the world.

“I will remember him as my best friend, my partner, my brother, and the bravest man I have ever known.”

William also asked folks to support the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation in Hank’s memory.

In addition to honoring Hank’s memory, William said, “It is also very important to me to immediately spread awareness about schizophrenia, bipolar, and suicide prevention.”

May Hank Deutschendorf rest in peace.

Kylie Jenner Throws Apparent Shade at Bella Hadid, Supports Team The Weeknd

As far as we can tell, no one has asked Kylie Jenner for her opinion on the ongoing Selena Gomez vs. Bella Hadid feud.

But the reality star has seemingly gone ahead and weighed in anyway.

Last week, of course, Selena was spotted on a date with The Weeknd, kissing the singer and cozying up to him on the sidewalk outside of a restaurant in Los Angeles.

A source told E! News that Gomez and The Weeknd dined at Giorgio Baldi for three hours, sitting in a back room with a private server.

“They came out and they were so happy,” an onlooker told Us Weekly of the artists that evening, adding:

“They were hugging and kissing. … Selena was all over him, hugging, kissing [him]. She looked amazing and so incredibly happy and in love.”

There was also talk that Selena and her new man went back to her place after dinner for a bit of dessert. (If you know what we mean!)

Shortly after news and photos from this date went viral, the true controversy began.

First, Bella Hadid unfollowed Gomez on Instagram, seemingly angry that her pal was now dating her serious ex-boyfriend.

Then, an insider close to the situation told TMZ that Gomez has been seeing The Weeknd for a few months now, not even bothering to tell Hadid about the relationship.

This source alleges that Hadid only found out about the romance via the Internet, claiming that Selena basically stabbed the model in the back and explaining:

“Giving Bella and Gigi a heads up would have been the respectful and honorable thing to do. But I guess that’s just Hollywood.”

Ouch.

Gomez has not said anything about her scandalous relationship, and neither has Hadid. At least not verbally.

Just a few days ago, however, Bella shared a photo on Instagram of her back to the camera, her middle finger extended in the air.

She didn’t include a caption with the image, but most followers didn’t need Hadid to elaborate. They very much understood her point.

So… what does any of this have to do with Kylie Jenner?

On Tuesday night, Kylie was spotted with The Weeknd and Tyga at the Italian restaurant Carbone in New York City. Witnesses say the trio was having a grand time together.

From there, Kylie went home and decided to sing a song to her fans on Snapchat.

And what song did she choose to sing? “True Colors” by none other than… The Weeknd!

Might Jenner simply be a fan of this track? Absolutely.

But you have to admit: the timing is very interesting. So is the song choice even.

Is Kylie telling Bella that her “true colors” are finally showing through? That she ought to shut up and move on because she isn’t dating The Weeknd any longer and the guy is free to bang whomever he pleases?

We don’t know. We’re just speculating here.

But Selena is supposedly very serious about her famous new boyfriend. She doesn’t see this as just another fling.

Perhaps Kylie can relate because she’s so smitten with Tyga and because that relationship also got underway amid contention and controversy.

It’s hard to say for certain.

It’s just pretty clear at this point that Jenner might as well be holding up some pom-poms in the above video. She is cheering on Team The Weeknd.

Demi Lovato Laughs Off Nicki Minaj Side-Eye, Apparent Shade

Demi Lovato is an advocate for body confidence and someone who tries to use her own experiences to help others overcome substance abuse issues.

In other words: she doesn’t have time for petty celebrity feuds.

Especially when it’s unclear whether or not those celebrity feuds even exist.

Shortly after the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in New York City on Monday, Nicki Minaj shared a photo on Instagram of herself, Lovato and fashion designer Jeremy Scott.

The latter designed the gowns both stars wore on the red carpet of the Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology–themed event.

Because the rapper tagged Scott, but did not mention Lovato in the photo, buzz has circulated online over whether or not Minaj was throwing shade at her fellow artist.

How did Demi respond to the incident?

First, she jumped on Snapchat and seemingly hinted at Minaj’s slight via a funny-filtered selfie and a caption that read:

“When you aren’t mentioned in a post but didn’t do s–t to the person.”

Later, the “Confident” crooned posted a picture of Minaj throwing some serious side-eye her way and made it clear that she didn’t exactly have a blast at the 2016 MET Gala.

“This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met,” she wrote as a caption, adding a number of hashtags, including “#whatsgood,” the amazing line Minaj used against Miley Cyrus in their onstage showdown at the 2015 Video Music Awards

A photo posted by Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) on

But Lovato then updated her Instagram message to insist that she really could not care less about whatever Nicki Minaj thinks or does.

“Some of y’all need to learn how to take a joke,” she wrote.

“I’m obviously laughing at the fact that 1. I look incredibly awkward and 2. That the shade being thrown in this picture actually gives me life.”

We don’t exactly think this alleged feud has any legs.

However, a couple other controversies did come out of the Gala:

But, hey, Beyonce’s less famous sister did not shove anyone in an elevator this year.

So that’s progress, you know?

Lex McAllister, Former Bachelor Contestant, Dead of Apparent Suicide

Lex McAllister, a contestant on season 14 of The Bachelor – has been found dead.

According to TMZ, authorities believe that McAllister took her own life by overdosing on prescription medications.

Lex’s family says she suffered from bipolar disorder and depression throughout her life.

Early reports indicate that a 911 call was received on Saturday afternoon after McAllister was found unconscious in her home.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where her condition quickly stabilized.

Sadly, McAllister reportedly took an unexpected turn for the worse on Sunday, when her organs began to shut down.

On Monday, her family made the difficult decision to remove her from life support, and she passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

McAllister was featured on one of the show’s most popular seasons, in which Jake Pavelka served in the title role.

Shockingly, she is not the first season 14 cast member to take her own life, as fellow contestant Gia Allemand committed suicide in 2013.

Following Allemand’s death, Pavelka spoke openly of his shock and grief.

There’s no word on whether or not he’s been informed of McAllister’s passing.

A successful career woman, McAllister’s Twitter page describes her as a “business development expert, franchise consultant and entrepreneur.”

Her family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

Benoit Violier, Owner of World"s Best Restaurant, Dead of Apparent Suicide

Benoit Violier, considered by many in the food world to be the best chef on the planet, was found dead on Sunday of an apparent suicide.

He was 44 years old.

Violier had been the owner of Restaurant de l’Hotel de Ville since 2012.

A renowned three-star establishment located in the small Swiss village of Crissier, the restaurant was ranked as best in the world in late 2015 by the latest Michelin Guide.

(This gastronomic booklet is the French foreign ministry’s answer to the Britain-based World’s 50 Best Restaurants.)

Not many details regarding Violier’s death have been made public at this time, with Swiss police simply releasing the following statement:

“Late in the afternoon, police… went to Crissier where they discovered at his home the body of Mr Benoit Violier.”

Vionier – who formerly worked for chef Joël Robuchon in Paris – told Swiss newspaper Le Temps recently that he had been deeply affected by the death of his “two fathers” last year.

The chef lost his biological father last April; three months later, his longtime mentor, Philippe Rochat (the chef he succeeded at the Restaurant de l’Hotel de Ville) also passed away.

Authorities are continuing to investigate this passing.

Via statement, Violier’s family has asked for privacy “to be allowed to mourn in peace.”

We send them our condolences.

Nick Wiltgen, Weather Channel Meteorologist, Dead of Apparent Suicide

Nick Wiltgen, a senior digital meteorologist at The Weather Channel, was killed in a car crash inside an Atlanta mall parking garage on Sunday evening.

He was 39 years old.

According to the police report, Wiltgen drove his Volkswagen convertible “at a high rate of speed” through the wall of this garage, passing away at 5:30 p.m. of cranial trauma.

Tami Sedivy-Schroder of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office says that “evidence gathered in the investigation indicated it was a suicide.”

Wiltgen became a part of The Weather Channel team as a radio forecaster in 2001 after graduating from the University of Nebraska.

Fellow meteorologist and Weather Channel colleague Jim Cantore mourned Wiltgen’s passing on Twitter last night.

“We lost part of our TWC family,” Cantore wrote, referring to Wiltgen as “a wonderful man and one of the best meteorologists I’ve ever known.”

Al Roker of The Today Show also chimed in via Twitter with a message of shock and grief, writing:

“Thoughts and prayers to Nick Wiltgen’s family. Such a part of @weatherchannel His smile, expertise and camaraderie will be missed.”

In his final professional act, Wiltgen helped write a roundup of snowstorm news published Sunday morning.

Cameron Clayton, the president of product and technology at The Weather Company, said in a statement that Wiltgen was a “treasured member” of the channel’s staff.

We send our condolences to his friends, family members and loved ones.

Sinead O"Connor Pens Apparent Suicide Note; Did She Overdose?

Sinead O’Connor has been found alive.

But all appears to not be well with the veteran singer.

O’Connor, who has a history of mental illness, penned a lengthy note on Facebook today that implied strongly that she was committing suicide.

“I have taken an overdose. There is no other way to get respect,” the letter reads. “I am not at home. I’m at a hotel, somewhere in Ireland, under another name.”

TMZ, fortunately, reports that O’Connor was found by authorities on Sunday afternoon and is receiving medical attention.

The artist has four children (ranging in age from 9 to 28) and is married to Barry Herridge, the therapist she married in Las Vegas after meeting him on the Internet.

In her Facebook post, O’Connor references a “horrific set of betrayals” and alleges “appalling cruelty” by Herridge, her kids and even her son’s girlfriend.

“There is only so much any woman can be expected to bear,” she says, going on to write how she’s been “punished” since having surgery in late August and adding:

“Howling crying for weeks. And been told by them all to go f-ck myself. I’m invisible. I don’t matter a shred to anyone.”

O’Connor made many headlines in October of last year when she got into a feud with Miley Cyrus over the importance of respecting one’s mental health issues.

In an open letter to Cyrus, O’Connor mentioned how she had “suicidal compulsion” in the past as a side effect of medication she had taken.

In this case, O’Connor concluded her sad post by writing:

well done guys, you’ve finally got rid of me. Sorry the penny didn’t drop sooner. I’m an idiot. When you planned to get me away from my babies did you plan for me losing my mind over it? It being the final straw? For how you’re gonna explain why I died?

Make sure you tell the truth. BARRY.. THEY WONT. YOURE THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS ME OR THE TRUTH. PLEASE STAND FOR ME AND TELL IT. i can’t play twister. My children don’t care if I live r die anyway. Neither do their dads.

Everyone is better off. Never ever do this to a woman again. Let this be your lesson. I survived it when John waters did it.. I can’t survive Jake doing it.

We send our thoughts to O’Connor and we hope she finds the help she so clearly needs.

Actor and model Sam Sarpong, the former co-host of the MTV show Yo Momma, has died at age 40. Suicide is believed to be the cause.

Sarpong died Monday in Pasadena, Calif., his publicist confirms.

Sam died of an apparent suicide after Pasadena law enforcement and fire officials responded to calls about a man on a bridge.

Family members called to the scene provided “background regarding his emotional state,” a police source recalls after the fact.

“Tragically, after approximately seven hours of communication, the male jumped from the bridge,” the police statement reads.

A statement from Sarpong’s representatives reads:

“The family appreciates the thoughts prayers and other expressions of sympathy, and request their privacy be respected at this extremely difficult time.”

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner completed postmortem testing Wednesday afternoon.
