Tide Pod Challenge: Teens Film Themselves Eating Detergent Pods! Why?!

What happens when you mix the internet, the neo-dadaist humor shared by Millennials and Generation Z, social media, YouTube"s "challenge" culture, and millions of years of evolutionary instinct?

Well, you get teenagers recording videos of themselves eating Tide detergent pods.

As you"ll see in the video below, this unbelievable (and very inadvisable!) stunt is the latest "challenge" video that"s taking the internet by storm. Oh, dear.

So, you know when you were a kid — and, honestly, now — and some things looked like food and, on some primal level, you felt the impulse to try to eat it?

Recently, people on social media have been talking about detergent pods and other "forbidden snacks."

From little colorful bouncy balls to salt lamps to translucent dice to detergent pods, there are certain small items that we have to resist the impulse to devour.

Why? Because our instincts — we"re talking, like, lizard brain instincts — see a small, colorful object that might be partially see-through, and it registers as fruit.

Not just fruit, but some sort of nutrient-rich morsel full of flavor, vitamins, and simple carbohydrates that our bodies need to survive.

So people have joked about "forbidden snacks." Memes were born.

Unfortunately, while the vast majority of people talking about these detergent pods were just remarking on the absurdity of their impulse to eat them, well …

Some people have been taking things a step further by recording themselves putting a detergent pod in their mouths.

They took a perfectly good, almost wholesome, meme, and turned it into one of those stupid "challenges" that could easily poison someone.

As the Taylor Swift song says, "This Is Why We Can"t Have Nice Things."

Now, some of these "challenge" videos are funny. Genuinely, truly funny.

Artistically created, they"re even set to music.

Many of them use tricks, via editing or camera movements, in order to simply make it appear that someone has eaten one of these "tasty" pods.

They are made of extremely concentrated soap, folks. They do not taste good. When eaten, they are also super, super bad for you.

Some of these videos are, again, illusions.

In fact, some videos include artificial detergent pods, made of safely edible things like candy and jello, which reminds me of that game show where people bite onto everyday objects in a room in order to discover which are chocolate.

(You can view an edible Tide Pod recipe here)

But we"re sad to say that at least some of these videos are for real.

Many companies make detergent pods, for the dishwasher or the washing machine.

Tide pods, for whatever reason, have been singled out by the meme and particularly by the people taking the "Tide pod challenge."

We can only imagine what a PR nightmare this must be for all of the people working at Tide, who must either be scratching their heads or screaming as they see their cleaning products ingested all across the internet.

In fact, Tide actually put out a statement:

"Our laundry pacs are a highly concentrated detergent meant to clean clothes, and they"re used safely in millions of households every day. They should be only used to clean clothes and kept up, closed and away from children."

Their statement continues:

"We have seen no indication of an increase of cases seeking medical treatment amongst infants and teenagers associated with the recent uptick in social media conversation or in consumer calls."

So, that"s good, at least.

We should note that the reason that detergent pods in general are so colorful is because that appeals to our instincts. (That"s why products and packaging, in general, look colorful)

We don"t think that it"s Tide"s fault, or any other company"s, that some people make terrible choices because they want their videos to get views.

Kylie Jenner Can"t Stop Eating, Cruel Report Alleges

We finally have an answer to this ongoing pressing question:

Where in the world is Kylie Jenner?

And the answer is this:

Someplace with a giant plate of food in front of her!

Indeed, according to a pretty mean new report by Radar Online, the 20-year old is not sharing new photos on Instagram and not appearing in public because she’s embarrassed.

She’s ashamed.

She’s downtrodden.

And it’s not just because she’s pregnant.

Kylie’s been eating non-stop and has gained a tremendous amount of weight,” an insider claims to Radar, adding:

“She is not eating healthy, either, so it is not making her situation any better.”

This is common for any woman that is expecting, of course.

How many times have you heard a pregnant person joke that she is “eating for two?”

Kylie, however, has made a living from posing in scantily-clad outfits and in sharing every detail of her personal life with her fans.

For this reason, those same fans are growing irritated over the lack of Jenner’s baby bump.

They’re sick of the games and just want Kylie to come out and admit she’s expecting a child with semi-serious boyfriend Travis Scott.

But Radar writes that Jenner has gained 60 pounds in just a few months and it’s all because she has a “big breakfast, big lunch, big dinner and tons of snacks in between.”

As a result, she can’t bear to show off her figure to, well, pretty much anyone.

This is actually pretty sad, if true.

Kylie has created a life for herself in which she can’t be her true self… unless that true self is svelte and sexy and all of that.

“She gorges on food and blames it on being pregnant, but says that she is always hungry,” Radar alleges, writing that the star “hides her [body] in oversized clothes” these days.

Because Jenner has not issued any sort of statement regarding her pregnancy, we don’t know for sure when she’s due or whether she’s having a boy or a girl.

But we hear the baby will arrive early this spring and be a female.

We’ve also heard disturbing reports that Kylie will try to get emergency weight loss surgery as soon as she gives birth.

She’s that desperate to shed this baby weight.

Her sisters and other loved ones are against this dangerous idea, but Jenner simply isn’t thinking clearly at the moment.

“She thinks she is morbidly obese right now,” the Radar insider says.

“After she gives birth, she is planning on checking into a fat farm for six weeks.

“If that doesn’t work, she will resort to using a procedure like limo or cool sculpting to shed the pounds.”

Again, we can’t verify the accuracy of this allegation.

But even in the Keeping Up with the Kardashians clip where Kylie seemingly tells her family that she’s pregnant (above), we do NOT see Kylie’s body.

We simply see her face over the phone.

This has to lend at least some credence to the possibility that Kylie really has gained a great deal of weight and really does feel awful about it.

The truth, however, is that we’ll never know for certain. We have no way of shooting down this claim until Jenner herself comes out and does what she is apparently afraid to do:

She has to make herself visible to the world.

Demi Lovato Shares Swimsuit Pic, Addresses Eating Disorder

When it comes to showing off her cleavage, it’s clear Demi Lovato has no issue.

Seriously, no… issue… at… all.

But the artist makes it clear in a new Instagram caption that she does sometimes feel self-conscious about a different body part.

On Thursday, the 25-year-old singer opened up about the ongoing challenges of recovering from an eating disorder, along with the constant feelings of doubt she often has about her appearance.

But which she is trying her hardest to overcome.

Along with the following picture, Lovato wrote this caption:

“So, I’m insecure about my legs in this picture but I’m posting it because I look so happy and this year I’ve decided I’m letting go of my perfectionism and embracing freedom from self criticism.”

Lovato, of course, has long been very candid about her past struggle with a drug addiction and also with anorexia.

She’s come a long way.

But her battle will never really be over.

Continued Lovato in her latest inspiring message:

“Learning to love my body the way it is is challenging but life changing.

“Giving up my eating disorder has been the most challenging journey of my life but I work every day towards solid recovery even if I mess up sometimes.”

In conclusion:

“Today I’m feeling strong. You all can do it too. It IS possible. Thank you God for this new chapter in my life. #EDrecovery #happyAF.”

We’ve long admired Demi not just for overcoming her own demons, but for speaking out so often about them in an attempt to help others as well.

In October, for instance, Lovato shared a couple before-and-after photos that made it apparent just how well she is doing these days.

The singer also admits to having bipolar disorder, but she doesn’t want to be defined by it.

She said the following three months ago in the documentary Simply Complicated, discussing her eating disorder:

“I don’t want to give it the power that it controls my every thought but it’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.

“Body image, what I wish I could be eating, what I wish I could be eating next, what I wish I didn’t eat, you know it’s just constant.

“I get envious towards people who don’t struggle with an eating disorder because I think my life would be so much easier.”

We continue to wish Lovato the best.

Demi Lovato Shares Incredible Before-and-After Eating Disorder Pics

Demi Lovato has a very important message to send to young fans.

Or to anyone, really.

The singer is in the news these days because she just came out with an especially personal documentary on YouTube.

It’s titled “Simply Complicated” and it delves into nearly every aspect of the artist’s life, from her past drug use to her most famous relationship to her struggle with bulimia.

This has been well-documented, of course.

Lovato has never been shy about her substance abuse issues or her eating disorder.

Along those lines, Demi just shared a pair of pretty amazing, contrasting photos on Instagram.

On the left is what Lovato looked like back before she received professional help… on the right is what she looks like now.

“Recovery is Possible,” she wrote as a caption.

Wow, right?

In the aforementioned documentary, Lovato opens way up about her battle with her eating disorder, explaining how her June 2016 split from boyfriend of six years Wilmer Valderrama caused her to fall back into past struggles.

“When I was in a relationship with Wilmer, I went three years without purging and when we broke up that’s one of the first things I did,” she confesses, expounding as follows:

“The less I have to think about food, the easier it is to go about having a normal life and I don’t want to let anybody down, so when I do have moments when I slip up, I feel very ashamed.

“What started the relapse was missing Wilmer. And when I feel lonely my heart feels hungry and I end up binging.”

It doesn’t get much more candid than that, does it?

Lovato also talks about how her battle with food started at a young age.

“I would bake cookies for my family and I would eat all of them and nobody would have any to eat. That was my first memory of food being that medicine for me,” she said.

“Food is still the biggest challenge in my life and it controls…

“I don’t want to give it the power to say it controls my every thought, but it’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.”

It’s a never-ending, all-consuming issue, Demi explains:

“Body image, what I’m going to eat next, what I wish I could be eating, what I wish I didn’t eat. It’s just constant.

“Like I get envious toward people that don’t struggle with an eating disorder just because I feel like my life would be so much easier.”

How does Lovato keep it under control?

What does she do to remain as healthy as possible?

“The gym really helps and I know that I would be in a very dark place without it.

“Anytime I’m able to take my mind off of any of my addictions, it’s very beneficial to me. Working out is a form of meditation for me because I’m not focused on anything in my head.

“It can transport you to a totally different place.”

We salute Demi Lovato for not only overcoming her personal demons… but for opening up in such a way that she can hopefully help others overcome theirs, as well.

Aaron Carter: I Have an Eating Disorder, Leave Me Alone!

It’s been a bit of a week for Aaron Carter, hasn’t it?

On Saturday night, he was arrested in Georgia for a DUI and drug possession, and it seems like he’s been on the verge of a breakdown ever since.

It’s actually been really, really hard to watch.

Earlier this week, Aaron did a lengthy interview with Entertainment Tonight to talk about the DUI and more — for instance, he explained that he wasn’t drunk when he was arrested.

He said that local police got a call that he was driving recklessly, but it was because the alignment was off on his car. He drove to an AutoZone to figure out the issue, and that’s where he was arrested.

It seems far-fetched, but some reports have specified that his arrest was actually for a DUI refusal, meaning that there was reason to suspect he was driving under the influence but he refused any testing.

So hey, he could be telling the truth.

Aaron also claimed that he doesn’t even drink, and that he only smokes the marijuana he was found with for anxiety and to help increase his appetite.

And speaking of his appetite …

In new excerpts from Aaron’s interview, he gets into his appearance and the alarming amount of body shaming he faces on a daily basis.

He says that the reason he’s so thin is because of a hiatal hernia, which he’s mentioned before, but that he also suffers from an eating disorder, which he calls a “stress condition.”

Just when you thought Aaron Carter’s story couldn’t get any sadder …

“I have a stress condition of an 80-year-old man,” he explains. “I am also lactose intolerant.”

He says that he weighs around 135 to 140 pounds and that he’s 5’8″, and his doctors have advised him to “avoid stress, because I can develop cancer.”

He doesn’t get into much detail about his health, but he does explain at length how all the criticism about his appearance makes him feel.

“How would you feel every two seconds, seeing a tweet, ‘You have AIDS. Go die. Oh, look at this meth head. Oh, meth kills. Crack kills,"” he asks, giving an example of the messages he receives.

“It’s body shaming and it’s the toughest thing to deal with.”

“I am not a meth head,” he adds. “I have never touched it in my life.”

He even shows off his teeth and his skin as proof, and he’s right — he doesn’t look like he’s on meth.

He just looks very, very thin.

The poor guy says it “hurts so bad” to even look in a mirror these days, because “there’s nothing I can do about it.”

He’s so insecure about his appearance that he gets fillers in his face, just to plump things up a little bit.

When asked what he would say to his haters if he could, he broke down in tears, crying “I’m sorry. I am sorry for the way that I look.”

Thankfully, Aaron says that he’s going to a training camp soon, and that he hopes to get healthier there — and he asked people to “Give me a break so I can look better, so I can eat.”

He even says that a lot of men have been reaching out to him to thank him for opening up about his issues with weight, because with celebrities, it’s usually just women who talk about body image.

“The difference,” he theorizes, “is men are a lot more prideful. We don’t want to admit it. I don’t want to admit I don’t look good.”

But it does seem like he’s on the right track now.

Abby Lee Miller: What Will She Be Eating In Prison?

Abby Lee Miller is making her way to Prison later today, and while everyone is wondering who her new bunk mate will be, TMZ has found out something much more personal about her time in the slammer.

Yes, Abby will be making a spin-off of Dance Moms from the slammer, and she’ll be teaching her fellow inmates how to hop to the beat.

We kid, of course. Instead, we know what the former dance instructor will be feasting on during her first in the slammer, and it actually sounds pretty good.

As we previously reported, Abby will be making her way into FCI Victorville prison in California, and it’s not far from her hometown.

In fact, it’s around forty miles from her hometown of San Bernardino, which is pretty great considering most people in jail are put in slammers hundreds of miles away from their family members.

Anyway.

Let’s get back to the gourmet food Abby will be eating when she makes her way inside. If she makes it there for breakfast today, she will be eating fruit, hot grits, whole wheat bread with jelly and skim milk.

On tap for lunch will be burgers, with a choice of fries or baked potato. Oh, and we can’t forget the fruit. The inmates will be getting their five a day.

Dinner time will find the prisoners eating deli sandwich or hummus wrap, along with bean soup and potato salad.

Abby will be all smiles at the weekend because lunch will consist of sloppy joes, while dinner will consist of chicken tacos.

Basically, Abby will be well fed during her time on the inside, so she need not worry about going hungry.

It should be interesting to hear about what happens to her during her first few days inside.

Considering her lavish lifestyle, she will likely struggle to adjust to her new digs.

What do you think about all of this?

Is Abby eating fit for a Queen?

Troian Bellisario: NO ONE Understood My Eating Disorder!

Troian Bellisario has a film coming out, so she’s making the usual rounds — which means that we all get to read interviews from this very intelligent actress.

She actually wrote Feed in addition to starring in it, probably because she’s amazing. Her costar is Tom Felton, either because he’s talented or because he’s every Millennial’s fantasy costar — you decide.

He’s kind of been everywhere lately, from the first season of Murder In The First to the latest season of The Flash. It sounds like his role in Feed is kind of a weird one, because it sounds like kind of a weird movie.

Not as weird as the 2005 film of the same name, which was about cannibalism and forced-feeding … though that kind of brings us to the upsetting subject brought up during Troian’s interview.

Troian’s spoken about her battle with an eating disorder in the past, but now she’s sharing something new about it.

“There was this emptiness in me that I wanted to, not fill, but engage,” she tells Interview of how her eating disorder fueled her early drive to act.

“I felt like there was a story in me that hadn’t been told, and it was a very personal story.”

Unfortunately, eating disorders are complex to experience and almost impossible to explain to people who have never had them.

“I couldn’t get anyone — even the people who loved me the most, even my boyfriend or my mother or my father — to understand what that experience was truly like for me.”

She must have felt so isolated by that — which, even after the fact, can be damaging.

“It was about my eating disorder, and I found that there were so many people who thought that it was about losing weight or being skinny.”

A lot of people, even in this day and age, think of eating disorders as just, like, extreme dieting. Eating disorders come in a variety of forms with their own pernicious quirks, but none of them are healthy and none of them are really about bikini season.

“I couldn’t quite get them to understand that it was about control on a very, very literal level.”

That struggle still informs her passion for storytelling, as an actress and as a writer. Sometimes you gotta take your experiences and use them as fuel.

Good for her for speaking out about it.

Don’t get us wrong — somebody’s eating disorder is nobody’s business but their own. But when you speak out about it, especially when you have a platform like Troian does, you can help change people’s lives.

Maybe someone reads her interview and seeks help for themselves. Or maybe just someone understands what a loved one went through.

Pretty Little Liars dealt with eating disorders as early as the first season, which is all that we watched, because that season alone was enough to take over our lives and literally haunt our dreams.

It was good but it was just … so much. Also, we binged it in a week.

But Ashley Benson’s character was, at one point during that season, blackmailed into wolfing down a set of cupcakes. Which might sound like the opposite of a problem, but her character had an eating disorder and it was a problem.

In real life, eating disorders can have devastating consequences.

People die. Some of them are teenagers, and some of them are young adults.

Some of them aren’t even teens yet — there are tweens and younger who battle with issues of control and self-image. This can be because of parental pressure or just a response to major life stresses.

It’s so not the same as skipping a meal every now and then because you’re busy or because you want to fit into a certain outfit.

Troian, of course, is doing so much better these days. Troian’s slender beauty may always be the case — body frames are determined more by genetics than anything else.

Eating disorders can be a special challenge for celebrities.

Special, if not necessarily worse. Celebrities can face more body-shaming than other people, because of course they do.

That means magazines, photographers, directors, and social media.

On the other hand, celebrities tend to have the resources to seek help. Not everybody does.

It’s always the worst on isolated young people who don’t even know where to turn or how to describe what they’re experiencing.

But look at her now — writing feature films and also starring in them, like a boss.

Feed sounds kind of weird from what we’ve read, and it might have some sort of twincesty vibe. But weird movies can be the best.

And it sounds super interesting.

Writers draw from their own experiences to tell stories, and that can manifest in ways that you wouldn’t expect.

You can bet that the unhealthy obsessions in Feed were in some way informed by Troian’s own experiences. Even if she never had a, like, psychic twin connection followed by a tragic death.
