Cuba Gooding Sr. Dies; Overdose Suspected
Cuba Gooding Sr., a music star and the father of Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr., was found dead in his car on Thursday.
Gooding’s body was slumped over the wheel of his Jaguar in 22100 block of Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, Calif., about 1 p.m.
He was 72 years old.
Paramedics who responded to the scene tried to revive the singer, but were unable to do so and he was pronounced dead soon after.
Sources familiar with the investigation told the L.A. Times that alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia were in Gooding Sr.’s car.
According to LAPD officials, there were of foul play and that the investigation had been turned over to the L.A. County coroner’s office.
They will determine the singer’s cause of death, most likely within the next 48-72 hours, though certain tests take longer to complete.
Gooding rose to fame with hits like “Everybody Plays the Fool” and “Just Don’t Want to be Lonely” as the lead singer of The Main Ingredient.
As for his most unusual name, which his son shares?
Born in Harlem, New York, the star was named Cuba by his father, Dudley MacDonald Gooding, and described the reasoning in 2015:
“He told my mother that he would name his first born son Cuba because he once lived in Cuba and had positive feelings about the country.”
He was encouraged to pursue a singing career early on.
“My mom and dad were determined that their first-born son would do something in the arts, if I had the talent,” he recalled back in 2014.
“Being born in Harlem had its advantages if you wanted to be an entertainer because it was literally the entertainment capital of the world.”
“I lived only eight blocks away from the Apollo Theater, and 19 blocks from Carnegie Hall [though that] required a little bit more sneaking in the back.”
Growing up, he saw Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson play, and vowed to become a singer in his own right.
The other members of Main Ingredient were childhood friends, but Gooding initially wanted a solo career and resisted coming on board.
He contributed backing vocals to some tracks, however, and stepped up as the lead singer following the death of frontman Donald McPherson.
That was 1971.
In 1972, the Gooding-led quartet recorded an album, Afrodisiac, which featured several songs written or co-written by Stevie Wonder.
By 1977, he had left the band, signed with Motown Records and released two well-received, though less commercially successful albums.
He re-joined Main Ingredient and worked with them through the 1980s, cementing his legacy as one of the best in his genre and era.
Son Cuba Gooding, Jr., of course, is an Academy Award-winning actor, most notably of Boyz ‘N the Hood and Jerry Maguire fame.
Recently, Gooding Jr. earned raves for his portrayal as the title character in FX’s acclaimed series The People vs. O.J. Simpson.
Gooding Sr. had three other children with his wife, Shirley Gooding, including Omar and April, both of whom are also actors.
Musician Tommy Gooding, who served as the musical director of his father’s touring band, rounded out the showbiz family.

Cuba Gooding Jr. Lifts Sarah Paulson"s Skirt, Gets Slammed For Sexual Harassment
Sigh. Just when we thought Cuba Gooding Jr. was flawlessly executing one of the most surprising comebacks in recent memory, he goes and does something like this.
Cuba joined his American Horror Story: Roanoake co-stars for a PaleyFest panel over the weekend, and for some reason, he thought it would be a good idea to hoist Sarah Paulson’s skirt as she welcomed Kathy Bates to the stage.
Yeah, we wish there were some context to make that act seem even slightly less insane, but there isn’t.
For reasons that will continue to defy explanation and common sense, Cuba Gooding Jr. decided to sexually harass his co-star in front of an audience of hundreds.
Paulson and Gooding are friends, and those in attendance say she quickly brushed the incident off (after recoiling in horror upon realizing a man was lifting her skirt in front of hundreds of onlookers, of course), but none of that makes this even remotely okay.
Let’s say Gooding and Paulson are number one besties, and they playfully engage in this sort of behavior behind closed doors.
This would still be wildly inappropriate behavior on Gooding’s part.
If he were a greeter at Wal Mart and he behaved this way with one of his co-workers, he would be fired on the spot.
There’s a good chance that Paulson was was appalled and baffled by Gooding’s behavior as the rest of us, but downplayed her disgust simply because she wasn’t sure of what else to do.
We may never know for sure, but even if she was cool with it, what Cuba did on that stage is 700 kinds of not okay.
Sadly, this is just the latest in a recent string of questionable behavior from Gooding.
Last year, Gooding’s wife, Sarah Kapfer, filed for divorce after 20 years of marriage.
Rumors that Gooding had driven her to the brink with years of heavy drinking and erratic behavior seemed to be bolstered in the final years of their relationship, particularly when police issued a warrant for Gooding’s arrest after he allegedly assaulted a bartender in New Orleans.
Shortly thereafter, a very intoxicated Gooding unleashed a string of expletives at an award show, an incident that seemed funny at the time, but is a bit troubling when viewed in hindsight.
We don’t pretend to know exactly what’s going on with Gooding, but here’s hoping he gets the help he needs.

Cuba Gooding Jr. & Sara Kapfer: It"s Over!
Cuba Gooding Jr. is bringing his marriage to Sara Kapfer to a close.
The American Horror Story star has filed for divorce from Kapfer after 22 years of marriage.
Their parting of ways probably comes as no surprise when you consider the fact that they have been separated in April 2014.
The pair were apparently trying to keep things amicable in order to raise their 10-year-old daughter.
Cuba is allegedly asking for joint legal and physical custody of their daughter.
They have two other children together.
In addition to that, he’s willing to provide spousal support to Kapfer.
It’s unclear what signaled Cuba to go through with the divorce, but the pair could have moved on to new relationships in the years since their separation.
However, they have been keeping the details of their romantic lives private.
We’ll probably get more clarity on the matter down the line, but it’s pretty great the pair have remained amicable since their split.
At least the end of their marriage has not been soaked in controversy like most celebrity breakups.
Cuba and Sara met in high school, so they have spend much of their lives together.
Cuba opened up about his relationship on The Steve Harvey Show after fans were wondering about the state of his relationship.
“Officially I’m still married, it’s just you know how some marriages go. Sometimes you take a break or two. All I’m saying is my life is what it is right now,” he explained to Steve Harvey.
“I took her to see a movie the other day. We’ve got kids man, we’ve got to keep this together.”
Cuba may have disappeared for a few years, but he returned to the spotlight in a big way on FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson, which was one of the most talked about shows of 2016.
