Meryl Streep to Rose McGowan: I Didn"t Know About Harvey Weinstein!
Rose McGowan has zero chill, and that’s usually a good thing. We love hearing her tear Harvey Weinstein a new one.
Sometimes, however, that admirable passion gets a little misplaced. The result is Rose McGowan slamming Meryl Streep, of all people, basically accusing her of having been complicit in Weinstein’s monstrous deeds.
Meryl Streep is speaking out, saying that she’s very hurt by Rose’s words, and endeavoring to make things clear.
Rose McGowan was outspoken in accusing Harvey Weinstein of rape — and she’s certainly not alone.
Too many actresses have come forward, identifying Weinstein as their harasser or their rapist.
Salma Hayek spoke of Weinstein as a “monster,” and says that she wonders if it was only her friendships with other influential members of Hollywood that prevented Weinstein from raping her.
Some times, a person escapes from a sexual predator because they have the right friends. Others just get lucky.
And others … unlucky.
Rose McGowan has spoken loud and clear against Weinstein. Unfortunately, some of her ire was misdirected at her fellow actresses.
“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest.”
We would counter that, surely, they did not know. A lot of people have no idea that there’s a monster in their midst.
“YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change.”
All awards are fake, really.
“I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”
Marchesa, of course, is the clothing line by Weinstein’s wife. While many feel sorry for the woman who most assume never knew of her husband’s monstrous deeds, Rose McGowan has been less sympathetic.
Rose has since deleted the tweet.
Meryl Streep addressed Rose McGowan’s criticisms in a lengthy letter, published in The Huffington Post.
“It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the ’90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others.”
That’s what we figured.
“I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.”
Sexual predators go to great lengths to cover up their crimes.
Meryl then goes on to explain how little contact she’s had with Weinstein.
“I don’t know where Harvey lives, nor has he ever been to my home.”
That’s good for her.
“I have never in my life been invited to his hotel room.”
For many actors, exchanging scripts and even auditioning in hotel rooms isn’t uncommon. Some wonder if, in light of these uncovered abuses, that should now change.
“I have been to his office once, for a meeting with Wes Craven for ‘Mustic of the Heart’ in 1998.”
That’s … nearly 20 years ago.
“HW distributed movies I made with other people.”
“HW was not a filmmaker; he was often a producer, primarily a marketer of films made by other people — some of them great, some not great.”
Weinstein did sometimes assume a hand-on role in films, but that makes him a demanding producer, not a filmmaker.
“But not every actor, actress, and director who made films that HW distributed knew he abused women, or that he raped Rose in the 90s, other women before and others after, until they told us. We did not know that women’s silence was purchased by him and his enablers.”
Sometimes, survivors are shocked to learn that other people didn’t know what happened to them. When something consumes your life, it’s hard to imagine that others could be so blind.
“HW needed us not to know this, because our association with him bought him credibility, an ability to lure young, aspiring women into circumstances where they would be hurt.”
Yes, predators have a vested interest in appearing innocent and personable.
“He needed me much more than I needed him and he made sure I didn’t know. Apparently he hired ex Mossad operators to protect this information from becoming public.”
We’ve heard about that.
“Rose and the scores of other victims of these powerful, moneyed, ruthless men face an adversary for whom Winning, at any and all costs, is the only acceptable outcome.”
Meryl then talks specifically about what people are doing to protect survivors from the wrath of the men who want them silenced.
“That’s why a legal defense fund for victims is currently being assembled to which hundreds of good hearted people in our business will contribute, to bring down the bastards, and help victims fight this scourge within.”
“Rose assumed and broadcast something untrue about me, and I wanted to let her know the truth.”
It’s clear that Meryl is speaking with compassion, here.
“Through friends who know her, I got my home phone number to her the minute I read the headlines.”
That was a good move to make.
“I sat by that phone all day yesterday and this morning, hoping to express both my deep respect for her and others’ bravery in exposing the monsters among us, and my sympathy for the untold, ongoing pain she suffers.”
Perhaps Rose McGowan was following Uma Thurman’s advice about waiting until she calms down before speaking up.
“No one can bring back what entitled bosses like Bill O’Reilly, Roger Ailes, and HW took from the women who endured attacks on their bodies and their ability to make a living.”
Sad but true.
“And I hoped that she would give me a hearing. She did not, but I hope she reads this.”
Meryl’s statement continues:
“I am truly sorry she sees me as an adversary, because we are both, together with all the women in our business, standing in defiance of the same implacable foe: a status quo that wants so badly to return to the bad old days, the old ways where women were used, abused and refused entry into the decision-making, top levels of the industry.”
And that, she says, is where the real problem lies.
“That’s where the cover-ups convene. Those rooms must be disinfected, and integrated, before anything even begins to change.”
Change can be a lengthy process, but it’s better to take your time than to rush and let horrible people slip through the cracks.

Meryl Streep Wants to Make Something Clear About Harvey Weinstein
Late last week, Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual harassment and misconduct by The New York Times.
In a bombshell report that cited eight settlements over the years, and which quoted multiple alleged victims, the newspaper detailed how the movie producer spent decades preying on young women in Hollywood.
But here’s the thing about this bombshell report:
It wasn’t really a bombshell. Not to those remotely familiar with rumors over Weinstein’s boorish behavior throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
The producer himself even basically acknowledged his sordid past… via a weird and rambling pseudo apology.
Over the weekend, meanwhile, Weinstein was fired from the company he helped build.
In light of these serious allegations, legendary actress Meryl Streep issued a statement to The Huffington Post through her longtime publicist.
It reads:
“The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported.
“The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.”
Streep worked with Weinstein on August: Osage County and The Iron Lady.
And she’s adamant that she didn’t just keep her mouth shut when it came to chatter over his abhorrent ways with women.
She was not complicit in any of this, Streep insists.
“One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew, she writes, adding:
“Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally.
“I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts.
“And if everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.”
Among the most damning and public accusations:
Ashley Judd says Weinstein answered his hotel room door in a bathrobe and asked her to watch him shower.
A reporter claims Weinstein masturbated in front of her.
The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar,” Streep says, adding that “each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited” in the media “will ultimately change the game.”
Elsewhere, Judi Dench once said she has a tattoo on her butt in honor of Weinstein.
But she has also come out in strong terms against him.
“Whilst there is no doubt that Harvey Weinstein has helped and championed my film career for the past twenty years, I was completely unaware of these offences which are, of course, horrifying,” the 82-year-old actress told The Sun.
“I offer my sympathy those who have suffered, and wholehearted support to those who have spoken out.”
Weinstein and his lawyer have said they will sue The New York Times for $ 50 million due to the publication making “false and defamatory statements.”
The guy just really sucks.

Jimmy Kimmel Uses "Over-Rated" Meryl Streep to Jab Trump (VIDEO)
Jimmy Kimmel took a huge sarcastic swipe at President Trump … all in support of some up and coming actress named Meryl Streep. In the middle of Jimmy’s opening monologue for the 89th Oscars he put the spotlight on Meryl by…
Jimmy Kimmel: Down with Trump, Matt Damon AND Meryl Streep!
Jimmy Kimmel had a challenging job as host of the 2017 Academy Awards.
As host, the comedian had to take to the stage just moments after Justin Timberlake – possibly the most popular and talented celebrity in Hollywood – opened the show with his beloved song from "Trolls."
But Kimmel was up for the task, delivering a brisk and hilarious monologue that didn"t shy away from the current political climate… which kept his feud with Matt Damon alive… and which surprisingly took aim at Tinseltown icon Meryl Streep.
Sort of.
In one heartfelt moment, Kimmel turned serious when addressing the divided state of our nation, telling the audience:
“If every person watching this show … if every one of you took a minute to reach out to someone you disagree with, someone you like, and have a positive, considerate conversation – not as liberals and conservatives, but as Americans – we could make America great again.”
Of course, Kimmel also made some actual quips about a certain Commander-in-Chief as well.
“I want to say thank you to President Trump," he said at one point. "Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? … It’s gone thanks to him.”
And in a quality double diss:
“In Hollywood, we don’t discriminate against people based on what countries they come from. We discriminate on them based on their age and weight.”
Kimmel also noted that actors will give speeches that “the President will tweet about in all caps during his 5 a.m. bowel movement tomorrow.”
Elsewhere, Kimmel taunted Damon"s latest movie, The Great Wall; made an outstanding Mel Gibson joke; and referred to Streep as "mediocre."
Really! He did! In total jest!

Meryl Streep: Feuding with Karl Lagerfeld Over Oscars Gown!
High drama ahead of the Oscars tonight, y’all.
And, believe it or not, it involves the Academy Awards goddess herself, Meryl Streep.
It all started on Friday when Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld claimed in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily that Meryl had originally chosen a Chanel dress for the awards ceremony, but then she ditched Chanel in favor of a designer who would pay her to wear their dress.
He said that he’d designed the dress and that they’d started to make it, but then a few days later Meryl’s people called and told them “Don’t continue the dress. We found someone who will pay us.”
The dress that Chanel made for her cost around $ 105,000, and Karl said that while he would make dresses for celebrities and give the dresses to them, he wouldn’t pay simply for his design to be worn by a famous person.
As for the fate of the dress, Karl said that she could keep it, since it was made specifically for her.
“It’s couture,” he explained. “It’s perfect for her. A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?”
And he’s right — it does sound pretty cheap. To be given such a ridiculously expensive dress is generous enough, but to demand to be paid for wearing such a dress? It’s more than a little absurd.
But here’s the thing: all that really, really doesn’t sound like something Meryl would do.
And, according to Meryl herself, she never did.
In a statement, she explained that it is “against her personal ethics” to be paid to wear a gown for a red carpet event. Which makes sense — Meryl Streep is anything but tacky.
Karl was quick to apologize, explaining that “After an informal conversation, I misunderstood that Ms. Streep may have chosen another designer due to renumeration, which Ms. Streep’s team has confirmed is not the case.”
“I regret this controversy and wish Ms. Streep well with her 20th Academy Award nomination.”
But Meryl wasn’t having it. Not even a little bit.
Another statement Meryl released through a rep said that “Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication.”
“That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record-breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience.”
She added that “Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology.”
So yeah, it’s pretty safe to say that Meryl is pissed.
Everyone should know better than to cross such an international treasure like this.

Dana White Fires Back at "Uppity, 80-Year-Old" Meryl Streep (VIDEO)
Dana White says Meryl Streep is an “uppity 80-year-old lady” who was completely WRONG when she took a shot at MMA during the Golden Globes. We spoke with the UFC honcho about Meryl’s comments Sunday night — when she was ripping Donald Trump’s…
Meryl Streep: Is She Overrated?
Meryl Streep did not win a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Florence Foster Jenkins on Sunday night.
And yet the veteran actress still managed to make the most memorable speech of the night.
By a long shot.
As you very likely heard by now, Streep accepted the Cecil B. DeMille during the ceremony, using her platform to call out Donald Trump for his frequent bullying and his disrespectful behavior.
(Technically, Streep did not actually call Trump out; she never uttered his name.)
After giving props to Hollywood for its diversity, and making a crack about how Trump wants to “kick out” foreigners, Streep arrived at the crux of her speech.
She focused on the time in 2015 when Trump mocked a disabled reporter named Serge F. Kovaleski and told the crowd:
“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing…
“Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence.”
Streep was given a rousing ovation by all in attendance, with many in Hollywood jumping on Twitter to sing her praises.
“We will need a lot of people as clear and brave as Meryl Streep if we are to fight the corruption, bad ideas and lies of Donald Trump,” wrote Judd Apatow.
“The definition of class,” wrote Diane Kruger.
But Trump had a different viewpoint, as you might expect.
Aside from pointing out that Streep was a Hillary Clinton “lover” and a “liberal movie [person],” Trump went on to slam the star as “overrated,” a distinction he has previously used for Megyn Kelly, Jon Stewart and the Broadway production Hamilton.
Streep, of course, has been nominated for 19 Academy Awards over the course of her career.
But she’s only won three times.
Overall, Streep has been up for 335 awards, yet has only taken home 164 trophies.
That means she wins fewer than half of the times she’s nominated. And people want to call her The Greatest Actress of Her Generation?!?
Some might say that these numbers lend credence to Trump’s argument.
Other people (named Rachel Dratch) may say “anyone who calls #Meryl “overrated” is unfit to serve.”
Streep’s resume is suddenly a topic of conversation over the Internet… and we want you hear from YOU!
Are you on Team Meryl? Or Team Trump?
Do you think Streep should have used the Golden Globe Awards stage as a soapbox? Or should she have just stuck to entertainment?
And, most urgently, do you think Meryl Streep is overrated?
WEIGH IN NOW:
Billy Eichner Blasts Fox News" Meghan McCain Over Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes attack on Donald Trump stirred a lot of emotion, and at least one war — between Meghan McCain and comedian Billy Eichner. Billy blasted McCain on Twitter after the Fox News host posted a message disparaging Meryl’s…
Meghan McCain Slams Meryl Streep, Gets Roasted to a Crisp By Billy Eichner
If you watched last night’s Golden Globes telecast, you probably came away from the show with two clear impressions:
1. White people really, really like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
2. Meryl Streep is an absolute boss.
Streep went off on Donald Trump during her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. Demille Award for lifetime achievement, and naturally, the president-elect responded by calling her an “overrated movie person,” which was not the least bit unexpected.
Surprisingly, however, Streep was also dragged by a woman who’s been an outspoken critic of Trump’s throughout his brief and bafflingly successful political career.
Meghan McCain, daughter of Arizona Senator John McCain, is no great fan of Trump’s.
Stands to reason, as early in his campaign, Trump bashed McCain for not being a “real war hero” because he was captured in combat.
What makes less sense is Meghan’s assessment of Trump’s Electoral College victory, and her belief that Mery Streep is somehow to blame:
“This Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won. And if people in Hollywood don’t start recognizing why and how – you will help him get re-elected,” Meghan tweeted.
Naturally, she was quickly dragged for her bizarrely tone deaf political commentary, mostly by folks who pointed out the obvious flaws in her logic (Clinton won the popular vote; very few Americans derive their political beliefs from awards show speeches, etc.).
Fortunately, one shining diamond in the overgrown rough of social media went the extra mile by not only calling out Meghan for the idiocy of her comment, but also articulating exactly why the tweet is particularly dumb coming from her.
If you’re not familiar with the work of Billy Eichner, his scathing takedown of the selectively conservative Ms. McCain is a solid introduction to his outspoken brand of commentary:
“Um she asked him not to make fun of disabled people and advocated for the freedom of the press and the arts you f-cking moron,” Eichner tweeted at McCain, seemingly not really holding anything back.
McCain replied:
“Calling republicans like me “fucking morons” is a great way for Hollywood to bridge the cultural divide. Enjoy your bubble,” which prompted Eichner to shoot back:
“I rather live in a bubble than live with people who don’t feel a need to respect the disabled, freedom of speech & the arts!!”
And he didn’t stop there:
“Oh & another message from my bubble-can u ask dad to give back the MILLIONS he’s received from the NRA? MERYL F-CKING STREEP!” Eichner tweeted, before dropping the mic by adding that he was off to the Netflix-Weinstein after-party,
Interestingly, Streep never mentioned Trump by name, but her comments left little doubt about whom she was referring to when she spoke of a bully who’s soon to assume a frightening level of power:
“Disrespect invites disrespect,” Streep said to applause from her peers.
“Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
Not hard to see why Meghan got dragged for somehow taking issue with Streep’s comments.
Donald Trump Fires Back at "Hillary Flunky" Meryl Streep (VIDEO)
Donald Trump isn’t taking Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes attack lying down — he’s dismissing her as a Hillary Clinton “flunky.” Streep used her acceptance speech for the Cecile B. Demille Award to bash the President-elect for his campaign…
Meryl Streep DESTROYS Donald Trump at the Golden Globes
Meryl Streep was honored at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, a recognition of her ridiculously successful and respected career as an actress.
After showing her gratitude to various people and organizations at the outset of her speech, Streep then took aim at a certain shameless real estate mogul who will soon be President of the United States.
First, she ran down the diversity included in Hollywood (Ryan Gosling is from Canada… Natalie Portman from Israel… Dev Patel from Kenya…) and joked:
"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts."
The beloved star then addressed the real-life “performance” from 2016 that “stunned” her, referencing Trump’s presidential victory in November.
She mentioned how Trump came under fire in 2015 for mocking New York Times investigative reporter Serge F. Kovaleski by impersonating his physical handicap.
“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing," she said, adding:
"Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence."
Naturally, because he truly cannot help him or comprehend that he"s just proving Streep"s point, Trump responded to her speech in an interview with the Times early Monday morning
He denied ever making fun of Kovaleski and said of Streep:
"Meryl Streep introduced Hillary Clinton at her convention, and a lot of these people supported Hillary."
Trump also said he did not watch the Golden Globes and slammed most attendees there as "liberal movie people."
Watch Streep"s full speech below and then share your reaction:
