Katy Perry: Disastrous VMAs Hosting Has American Idol Producers in a PANIC!

Folks who didn’t watch the VMAs on Sunday because they were too busy watching relatives bone on Game of Thrones or escaping rising floodwaters, answer this: What did you hear, after-the-fact, about Katy Perry?

Katy Perry was the host, and she was just … not overwhelming. No huge controversies, sure, but not even Katy’s terrible opening monologue was especially memorable.

That’s a problem for Katy, but it might be an even bigger problem for American Idol producers, who are reportedly very concerned that they’re paying $ 25 million to Katy Perry to be a judge only for her to flop.

On Sunday, I had friends over, and they mentioned that traffic was especially slow near my home.

Why? Because American Idol auditions were in town.

Yes, in case you’ve managed to forget, American Idol is coming back, like some archetypal horde that people thought had been defeated.

The biggest stir of publicity about it is Katy Perry’s salary of $ 25 million.

Don’t get us wrong, she’s a big-time celebrity who’s hosted the Superbowl, which is probably what the American Idol producers and the network were thinking when they hired her.

What they clearly weren’t thinking about:

One, that Katy Perry was singing for her Superbowl Halftime show, which is very different from sitting at a table and talking and judging.

Two, that Katy Perry was pretty famously upstaged at that show by Left Shark. You didn’t forget Left Shark, did you?

Well now, RadarOnline is reporting that ABC higher ups and American Idol showrunners are worried that they made a mistake by hiring Katy Perry to be a judge.

It sounds like they’re panicking, actually.

RadarOnline‘s source reports that her lackluster hosting over the weekend is what has them so concerned.

“They are paying her $ 25 million and she was a total dud [on the VMAs].”

You might be wondering how they didn’t catch it earlier, right?

Here’s how:

“No one ever auditioned her for the new Idol job and they are freaking out that they hired someone who is terrible on live television.”

Oh dear!

Usually, if you get a job without applying for it (or auditioning, in this case), it’s because someone who’s seen your work up close before (maybe a coworker or a former boss) is either doing the hiring or has vouched for you.

It sounds like Katy was just offered the gig, sight unseen.

ABC had already had concerns, RadarOnline had previously reported, that Katy Perry might upstage contestants.

(Like Mariah Carey)

Or that she might just need to tone down … not her look, but her very attention-grabbing personality.

(As far as we can tell, that’s not a euphemism for her boobs)

Judges are supposed to evaluate contestants, not overshadow them.

Now, though, it sounds like ABC and American Idol are afraid that Katy’s just going to fall flat like she did at the VMAs.

Just because someone is good at singing and performing doesn’t mean that they’re good at talking on camera.

Similarly, like, just because someone’s great at giving interview or interviewing people doesn’t mean that they have a dazzling singing voice or would make an amazing performer.

This should be a lesson to us all, we suppose: make sure that you hire the best and most highly recommended babysitter or dog-walker or whatever. Not just the one who happens to be hot.

American Idol Revival: In Jeopardy?

Ever since Katy Perry was confirmed as the first judge on ABC’s rebooted American Idol, there has been much speculation about who would be filling the other seats on the panel.

Despite negotiations that feel like they’ve been dragging on for an eternity, it appears that the producers are no closer to filling up the panel than they were a few weeks ago

That’s a bit worrisome when you consider the fact that filming is scheduled to begin at the end of September. In an ideal situation, the panel would be locked in weeks before.

Lionel Richie, Charlie Puth, Luke Bryan and Keith Urban were thought to be in the mix a few weeks back, but since no deals have been announced, it sounds like they do not like the deals being offered to them.

According to TMZ, the thing holding up Lionel from signing on the dotted line is the proposed pay he would receive from taking on the role. The report states his management team is demanding $ 10 million for his services.

However, producers only want to offer $ 5 million, and it’s unclear whether Lionel would sign for such an amount. The figure is huge, but Katy Perry is set to pocket $ 25 million for her services.

That’s a big difference when you consider the fact that Lionel has been in the music business for much longer than Katy. Something tells us the producers are probably regretting offering the “Bon Appetit” songstress such a big payout.

On top of that, producers are debating the number of judges to have on the panel. Previously, three seemed to be the magic number, but it sounds like there will be four.

That’s assuming the panel can even be filled in time.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Ryan Seacrest was lobbying for a figure similar to Perry’s but TMZ reports that he settled for somewhere between $ 10 to $ 15 million.

What do you think about all of this?

Will the show find the right talent before the time is up?

Scotty McCreery: American Idol Star Takes Loaded Gun to Airport!

Isn’t it such a delight to see good ol’ Scotty McCreery in the news again?

As hard as it may be to believe, it’s been six years since Scotty won his season of American Idol with his super deep, super country voice.

Since then, he’s been big in the country music scene — really big, in certain circles.

And good for him, right?

But while Scotty has always been adorable, the circumstances of this new story about him aren’t exactly the best.

And that’s because the story is about how Scotty actually brought a loaded gun into an airport.

It’s more than a little shocking, because literally everyone has enough sense to know that this is a terrible, dangerous move, and those who do it anyway usually have the worst intentions.

But it seems like Scotty really just made an honest mistake.

On July 13th, he went to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and while he was going through security, it was discovered that he was carrying a 9mm handgun and ammunition in his backpack.

He did have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but still … what he did wasn’t exactly legal.

He was cited with a misdemeanor, the gun was taken, and he was allowed to board his flight.

So what happened?!

As Scotty explained in a statement to a local news station, “I have been a concealed carry permit holder for a while now after being robbed at gunpoint in 2014, and I take gun safety very seriously.”

We’re sure he does — the robbery he’s referring to hear sounded terrifying.

As he said, in 2014, he was robbed at gunpoint when a group of men broke into his Raleigh home, forced him and his roommates to lie face-down on the ground, and proceeded to steal cash and electronics.

It’s understandable that he’d want to get a permit to carry a gun of his own after such an ordeal, and it’s also easy to believe that he’d be extremely careful with it.

“While in between tour dates last week,” Scotty continued, “I went to go target shooting with a friend a few days before an early flight out of my hometown Raleigh-Durham airport.”

“Unfortunately, I did not realize that I left my pistol in my backback until the TSA found it during the security X-ray screening and rightfully confiscated it.”

“I had my concealed carry permit on me,” he added, “so once they had checked everything out, they then released me to catch the next available flight.”

“Great to know our airport security force is on the job. I have learned a lesson that I won’t forget.”

We imagine that’s a pretty big understatement.

Lionel Richie: Joining American Idol?!?

We’ve known for weeks now that Katy Perry will be joining ABC’s retooled version of American Idol, but we’ve been wondering which other big names would show up as the other judges.

According to TMZ, producers think the ideal second judge would be Lionel Richie, and they are probably right. He has an expansive career in the music business and has won many awards in support of this.

The only thing that may cause some issues is Richie’s fee. We have no idea what the heck the producers would offer him, but Katy Perry’s $ 25 million fee will likely make negotiations difficult.

Yes, we’re still in shock that Katy got that much, but we’re happy for her. Her people sure know how to negotiate to get their client a good amount of money for her services.

There are also rumors that Ryan Seacrest is ready to sign on the dotted line to host the series. He will apparently receive between $ 10 and $ 15 million for his duties.

With the potential of Richie being attached, something tells us he would command a higher fee than Perry because of the length of his time in the music industry.

Will the producers play ball and offer him that? It’s probably a good thing that there’s no confirmation on whether someone has reached out to him yet.

With two spots left on the judging panel, it has been hinted that the producers would be looking to hire the final few people with a reduced fee.

We’re struggling to come to the conclusion that all of this will be worth it. The last season on Fox averaged 9.1 million viewers and a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49.

Part of the reason it rated that well was that it was widely publicized as the final season. The show will not have been off the air for even two years when it returns in spring 2018.

Could ABC be making a huge mistake by throwing so much money at the show? Will it even be worthwhile when the ratings come in?

It could be one of the most exciting developments of the 2017-2018 season. What do you think?
