The Four Recap: A Fresh Take on Singing Competitions?!
It’s crazy that we’re in 2018 and the broadcast networks are still throwing singing competitions our way.
What stings with singing competitions is the sheer fact that much of the winners are never heard again, so it’s increasingly difficult to sit through them.
Fox’s latest effort comes in the form of The Four: Battle for Stardom and the network seems to think it’s going to be the show that will successfully change the genre up.
When the series kicked off Thursday night, the four finalists had already been chosen by the judging panel that consisted of Meghan Trainor, DJ Khaled, Charlie Walk and Sean “Diddy” Coombs.
The four best singers in all of the land were apparently Lex Lu, Blair Perkins, Elanese Lansen and Ash Minor. It definitely felt anti-climactic to go into the episode without witnessing the journey of these four.
But, whenever a challenger appears, they have the power to take one of the seats and send the person who is in the final four home, or something.
The first challenger was Tyler Griffin, and he appeared on the scene to film a Jason Derulo song. It was a decent enough rendition of the song, but Charlie Walk tried to be the Simon Cowell of the group and basically said it was crap.
The other three seemed mad because they actually liked the performance. The big flaw with the format is that ALL the judges need to give the go-ahead for the person to advance in the competition.
It’s going to be rare to find an act that all the judges agree on, and it takes away much of the suspense. That meant Tyler’s big challenge was all for nothing and he was sent home.
Zhavia, a 16-year-old girl, appeared as the next challenger and wasted no time in belting her heart out to Khalid’s “Location.”
Zhavia was voted through, and that meant she got to battle one of the Four for their place in the competition. Her battle was with Elanese, and it was clear Zhavia performed better.
The audience allowed Zhavia to stay and Elanese was sent packing, so there’s that. It didn’t help matters that Fergie was muttering as she walked around the stage.
The next challenger was a singer-songwriter named Anthony Hall, but the judges were not feeling it and cut him off pretty much off the bat. What happened to giving everyone a chance, you guys?
Illakriss was the next person, and he was voted through to battle it out with Lex Lu, but Lex ran circles around him in the performance, and Illakriss was sent home.
Saeed Renaud was the final competitor on the night, and we quickly learned he had already won a Grammy as a songwriter, so he had more experience than half of the judging panel.
But Renaud’s rendition of “Run To You” by Whitney Houston was hands down the best performance of the night. The shock was off the charts. It’s no Susan Boyle moment, but it’s up there.
Saeed got to battle it out with Blair and won the battle.
That concluded an awkward 120 minutes long episode. There are hints of a good show, but the judges need to dial back the enthusiasm and critique the singers.

Ah, 2010.
It was a simpler time when Taylor Swift only feuded with her ex-boyfriends and Kylie Jenner’s lips looked like ones you’d find on a normal human face.
Taylor’s hair may have been crimped within an inch of its life but everything else was smooth sailing for the two upstarts who now rank among the most famous women in the world.
These days, of course, things are much more complicated.
The feud between Taylor and Kim Kardashian has gotten so intense that Kylie and company probably spit on the floor whenever Swift’s name is mentioned.
But it wasn’t always that way.
The elders speak of a time when Kylie and her sister Kendall enjoyed – nay! – rocked out to Taylor’s music.
It this time of strife and unrest and Melania Trump pretending to be Michelle Obama, we think it’s important to remind the world of this less contentious era:
Yes, that’s Kylie and Kendall lip syncing to Taylor’s “Better Than Revenge.”
A somewhat apt choice of song given everything that’s taken place over the past week.
But that’s not why we’re sharing it.
Come to think of it, we’re not sure why we’re sharing it.
Are we attempting to foster unit, or laughing at a video some now-famous girls made when they were in middle school?
You be the judge.
All we know for sure is that Kim may have proof that Taylor is lying about Kanye’s lyrics, but now the whole world has proof of something far more important:
No one can resist a catchy Tay Swift jam.
So keep right on feuding, Kim, but remember – some day soon you’ll be driving down the freeway and “Shake It Off” will come on and you will fall victim to Taylor’s trance.
Everyone does at some point.
In fact, it’s already claimed two of your siblings. Muahahahaha!

Kylie Jenner: Singing About Breakups & Cheating on Snapchat!
When I was a teenager, if you wanted to give your ex a message, you"d tell a friend or stick a note on his car.
These days, the kids do it passive-aggressively on social media.
Fresh off her breakup with Tyga, Kylie Jenner is seemingly sending a message to her ex through song on Snapchat.
The lip kit maven posted a video of herself lip syncing to Beyonce"s "Hold Up," a new track from "Lemonade," which we know is all about cheating.
"They used to hide from you, lie to you," she mouthed to camera through a kooky green-faced filter.
It"s not the first or even thousandth time Kylie has sung to Snapchat, but this particular song choice in the wake of a breakup is telling, if not a classic adolescent move.
She went on to faux-perform another diddy about infidelity, this time through a zebra filter and crooning to "Losin" Control" by Russ.
“Should’ve ended it before it started. All she ever got was brokenhearted," she sang in the video, posted below.
"He was cheating on her, tryna flip it back on her like a victim.”
So, is she saying Tyga cheated on her?
Because lord knows there were a gazillion rumors suggesting just that.
Kylie hasn"t spoken publicly about the split, which was confirmed earlier this week.
However, a source told TMZ that Kylie and Tyga broke up because the two had different goals and wound up fighting about everything.
Tyga talked to reporters about the relationship twice this week.
He broke his silence by stating that he was doing "good" post-breakup and just trying to work and "evolve."
Then yesterday, he told paparazzi that he will always love Kylie, adding that "sometimes things just don"t work out."

Selena Gomez: Singing to Win Back Justin Bieber?
Perhaps Selena Gomez is not to sick of that same old love after all.
On Friday night, Gomez kicked off her Revival Tour in Las Vegas, giving fans in attendance an enjoyable show that featured a number of old songs from the artist.
And one intriguing new song.
It was titled “Feel Me” and many are speculating that it was written with Justin Bieber in mind.
On what are folks basing this assumption? Considering some of the lyrics:
No one loves you like I love you/I never cheated, never lied/I never put no one above you/I gave you space and time.
And now you’re telling me you miss me/And I’m still on your mind/We were one in a million/Our love is hard to find.
That does sort of tell the Justin and Selena story, doesn’t it?
These young singers have gotten together and broken up so many times over the years that we’ve lost track.
But Gomez has never been the one accused of cheating or lying or leading Bieber on. She’s definitely given him space and time, far more than Bieber deserves, some might say.
Of late, insiders claim Gomez and Bieber have been texting each other on a daily basis.
Talk of their romantic reconciliation his a fevered pitch in March after Bieber caused a stir online by posting a throwback photo of the former couple along with the simple caption “Feels.”
And you did notice the title of Selena’s latest track, right? FEELS.
Selena has claimed on many occasions that she’s sick of talking about her ex-boyfriend, but something clearly keeps drawing her back to The Biebs.
She told W Magazine the following about her initial split from her fellow celebrity:
“At first I didn’t care. To me it was: I’m 18, I have a boyfriend, we look cute together, we like that.
“Then I got my heart broken and I cared. Because people had no idea what was going on, but everywhere it was a million different things. I was kind of in a corner, banging my head against the wall. I didn’t know where to go.”
Gomez has also opened up about Bieber on stage before.
