Ronnie Wood: Rolling Stones Guitarist Reveals Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Here’s a sad story for music fans …

Ronnie Wood, guitarist for the Rolling Stones for over 40 years now, has just revealed that earlier this year, he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

And he’s sharing intimate, heartbreaking details about his journey in a new interview with Daily Mail’s Event magazine.

“Did I think I’d ever make it to see this?” he began. “Hell no! Someone up there must like me. And luckily someone down here likes me too.”

Honestly, it is kind of shocking that he’s still around making music — with all the booze, drugs, and smoking, he hasn’t exactly been kind to his body in his 70 years.

But thankfully, he’s been sober for a while now, and he quit smoking last year when his wife gave birth to twins, two little girls they named Gracie and Alice.

Still, Ronnie said “I had this thought at the back of my mind after I gave up smoking a year ago: ‘How can I have got through 50 years of chain-smoking — and all the rest of my bad habits — without something going on in there?"”

As he found out a few months ago though, there was something going on in there.

“I’ve had a fight with a touch of lung cancer,” he revealed.

“There was a week when everything hung in the balance and it could have been curtains — time to say goodbye. You never know what’s going to happen.”

He said that he found out about the cancer back in May, when he got a check-up ahead of this fall’s Rolling Stones tour.

As he explained, all the band members are required to have physicals before any touring can happen, and when he got his, the doctor “asked me if I wanted him to go deeper and check my heart, lungs and blood.”

“I said, ‘Go for it."”

“And then,” he said, “he came back with the news that I had this supernova burning away on my left lung. And to be totally honest, I wasn’t surprised.”

He hadn’t had a chest x-ray since he went to rehab in 2002, and with how much he smoked, and considering he only quit last year, it makes sense.

The doctor asked Ronnie what he wanted him to do, “and my answer was simple: ‘Just get it out of me."”

After the discovery of the tumor, he underwent more tests to see if the cancer had spread, and “if that had happened, it would have been all over for me.”

“I was prepared for bad news but I also had faith it would be OK,” he said.

He and his wife didn’t tell anyone at all about what was going on, “because we didn’t want to put anyone else through the hell we were going through.”

“But,” he added, “I made up my mind that if it had spread I wasn’t going to through chemo, I wasn’t going to use that bayonet in my body.”

Not for any deep reasons though — he said that he planned on refusing chemo because “I wasn’t going to lose my hair. This hair wasn’t going anywhere.”

Luckily he didn’t have to make that decision for real, because the cancer hadn’t spread, and he and his doctors made a plan to remove the tumor as soon as possible.

“Just before I closed my eyes for the operation I looked at the doctor and said, ‘Let battle commence,” he recalled.

Now, three months later, Ronnie says that he’s “OK,” but he still has to have checkups every few months.

“I was bloody lucky,” he admitted, “but then I’ve always had a very strong guardian angel looking out for me. By rights I shouldn’t be here.”

And it’s a good thing, too — he’s got two little babies to care for, and three adult children, too.

Best wishes, Ronnie!

John McCain Reveals Brain Cancer Diagnosis

John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

The Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix has confirmed that the 80-year old Republican Senator from Arizona has “a glioblastoma” that was found via testing after he went in for surgery on a blood clot over his eye on July 14.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, Glioblastoma is an especially aggressive tumor that forms in the tissue of the brain and spinal cord.

The politician – who ran against Barack Obama for President in 2008 – will weigh his future medical options, but a representative says he will likely undergo a combination of radiation and chemotherapy.

A statement from McCain’s office just minutes after the diagnosis went public says he is “in good spirits as he continues to recover at home with his family in Arizona.”

It reads in full:

Senator McCain appreciates the outpouring of support he has received over the last few days. He is in good spirits as he continues to recover at home with his family in Arizona.

He is grateful to the doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic for their outstanding care, and is confident that any future treatment will be effective.

Further consultations with Senator McCain’s Mayo Clinic care team will indicate when he will return to the United States Senate.

The Mayo Clinic, meanwhile, emphasizes that McCain’s “underlying health is excellent” and that “treatment options” are being debated by his medical team.

The blood clot for which McCain was treated last week was over the senator’s left eye, not far from the left temple where he was diagnosed with melanoma in 2000.

Prior to this diagnosis, the long-time politician had three other malignant melanomas removed in 1993, 2000 and 2002. None of these melanomas were invasive.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta tells CNN that the average survival rate for malignant glioblastoma tends to be around 14 months with treatment.

“The news of my father’s illness has affected every one of us in the McCain Family,” Tweeted Meghan McCain on Wednesday night, adding:

“It won’t surprise you to learn that in all this, the one of us who is most confident and calm is my father.”

You can read the complete, moving statement below:

mm statement

In 1967, while serving in the United States Navy, McCain was shot down during a Vietnam War mission.

He was held captive by the enemy until 1973, surviving years of torture that left him with many physical ailments for the rest of his life.

He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and moved to Arizona; he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986.

McCain ran for the Republican nomination in 2000, but lost in a primary to George W. Bush.

Eight years later, he represented the GOP in the general Presidential election, but lost to Obama.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called McCain “a hero to our conference and a hero to our country” upon learning of his cancer diagnosis, adding:

“He has never shied from a fight and I know that he will face this challenge with the same extraordinary courage that has characterized his life. We all look forward to seeing this American hero again soon.”

With messages of support pouring in all over social media, Arizona’s other senator, Jeff Flake, wrote on Twitter:

“Just spoke to @SenJohnMcCain. Tough diagnosis, but even tougher man.”

And this from Democratic senator Brian Schatz: “This is awful news. The country owes a debt of gratitude to this American hero.”

We share these sentiments and we send our thoughts to John McCain and his family during this dificult time.

Maria Menounos: Diagnosed With Brain Tumor as Mom Fights Brain Cancer

Maria Menounos is on the road to recovery after having surgery to remove a golf-ball-size meningioma brain tumor.

The 39-year-old underwent the surgery while her mother, Litsa Menounos, battled stage 4 brain cancer.

The E! News coanchor confirmed the news to People Magazine.

“This February I thought I had an ear infection, so I went to a doctor, and he said, ‘Your ears are the cleanest things I’ve ever seen. What else are you feeling?’ I’d been getting light-headed on-set and having headaches.”

“My speech had gotten slurred, and I was having difficulty reading the teleprompter. I said, ‘I know you’re going to think I’m crazy, but I think I have a brain tumor like my mom,’” Maria continued.

“He said, ‘I don’t think you’re crazy. Let’s just get an MRI.’ The next week I started feeling better, so I was like, ‘I’m clearly paranoid.’ So I kept pushing the MRI.”

Fast forward three months and the tumor has been removed. The tumor was revealed not to be cancerous, and her prognosis is hopeful.

Maria has decided to give up her role within E! News to recover and allow herself to think about the next chapter of her life.

“I am so grateful for the past three years at E!, I had such an amazing time co-hosting with Jason Kennedy and working everyday with the wonderful roster of talent on the show including producers, staff, and crew,” Maria said in a statement.

“It was such a special, good-hearted group and one I’ll always consider family. A special thank you to Frances Berwick and Adam Stotsky for all the support they have shown me through the years especially during these tough times. I will truly miss everyone and looking forward to this next chapter in my life.”

In addition to speaking to People, Maria opened up about her experience on The Today Show.

“For me, I saw it as a huge blessing and a huge gift because I needed to change my life,” she said, trying to hold back the tears.

“We’re caretakers as women, and we help everybody, and we put ourselves last always. And I don’t think — at least for me — I guess I realized I didn’t value myself in a lot of ways. And so I think that that was a really important lesson.”

Maria also opened up about her intentions to start a family in the wake of the ordeal.

“I want to start a family,” she added on Today. “You realize really quickly when something like this happens that nothing else really matters.”

We at The Hollywood Gossip wish Maria a speedy recovery.

Alaskan Bush People Recap: Yes, It"s Cancer

The sad rumor turned into an unfortunate reality on Wednesday night.

Following weeks of chatter heading into the final season of Alaskan Bush People, the latest installment of this popular Discovery Channel series confirmed the truth about star Ami Brown…

… she has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

“Ami started getting sick months ago and we didn’t know what it was, but it changed from the point of ‘something’s wrong’ to ‘something’s wrong,’” Ami’s husband, Billy, told the camera on this week’s episode.

In previews for Season 7 of the show – which centers on a family who has basically cut itself off from civilization and who lives off the land in Alaska – there were hints that Brown was ill.

There’s been talk that she was even flown to Los Angeles for treatment.

This is what really got folks talking, considering how rarely members of the Browns visit the lower United States.

The final set of Alaskan Bush People episodes started filming three months ago.

They premiered last Wednesday with a focus on Ami undergoing a biopsy after a number of scans revealed a disturbing mass in her lungs.

“Everybody, of course, knows that it will come out good – so we just have to be strong,” said 22-year old daughter Bird last night, trying to remain optimistic as she and her siblings awaited test results.

Later on, however, 30-year old Bear went over to a car with a flower for his mom… and noted right away that the news was not positive.

His brother, Matt, agreed. He felt the same way.

“Seeing mom and dad get out of the car I … kind of already get a feeling that it hasn’t gone too well,” he said, adding:

“In one way, I can say that everything in my life has prepared me for this moment. In another way, nothing can.”

In the end, it was left to Billy to confirm the family’s worst fears.

“Not good. Not good at all,” he told his kids of the exam outcome, explaining as follows:

“They’ve got to do some more tests and stuff and what they can see is stage 3 cancer. She could easily be stage 4.”

Stage four is the most serious level for a cancer.

It typically means the patient does not have a lot of time left.

“I don’t care who you are. I don’t care what you’ve been through. I don’t care how old you are. If you hear that your mother has cancer, it’s going to shock you,” said Rain, 14, the youngest of the seven Brown children.

“I just wish I could change it somehow. I’m very scared for her,” she added.

For Ami, meanwhile, the fear of what will happen to her appeared to be less cumbersome than her concern over the impact this will have on her loved ones.

“She doesn’t want to be a burden on someone,” Billy said of his wife. “That’s not Ami. Ami is to take the burden away and take care of everything, but she has to admit to herself that she can’t be that right now.

“It’s just time for us to pay it back to her right now, it’s all I think we can do.”

To conclude this recap of the latest Alaskan Bush People episode, we’ll leave you with a few words from Ami.

Bill and the kids are very loving and supportive. They’re all worried. I tell them, don’t worry. Please don’t worry. Be happy … keep the faith. Good or bad, it’s God’s will and we’ll walk that road.

There’s a lot for the kids to experience. I want to be there. I want to hold their babies. I want to hear them laughing …

I want to see their eyes wide with enthusiasm as they experience these new things.

We’ll continue to tune in each Wednesday night at 9/8c to Discovery and hope that things turn around for Ami.

“This is not the end of the road,” said 27-year old son, keeping a hopeful viewpoint and concluding:

“It looks like it’s going to be the beginning of maybe a very long, very hard road for everybody.

“But we’re just going to have to be stronger than ever and keep up the faith in the good Lord and make it through this.”

Erin Andrews Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis: Get The Details!

Erin Andrews is cancer-free after having surgery to remove all traces of the disease from her body

The 39-year-old has opened up to Health magazine about her diagnosis, recovery and whether there is the possibility that cancer could return down the line.

One of the key talking points, of course, was Erin’s decision to freeze her embryos a few years back. Her reason?

“Just because it was all the rage,” the star confirms to the publication.

“It definitely took a serious turn for us,” Andrews opens up about the chances of conceiving with fiancé, Jarret Stoll.

“I’m not young, we don’t know when we’re going to have a baby, we don’t know if this is going to come back.”

It sure sounds like things were in an uncertain state for Andrews during that difficult time. Thankfully, she’s currently healthy.

Andrews even opened up about keeping her diagnosis a secret from her coworkers. We can’t even begin to imagine how it must have been for Erin to come to terms with the diagnosis.

It would have been difficult for anyone.

“Working with a bunch of men, I didn’t wanna be like, ‘Sooo, they think I have cervical cancer,’ and they’d be like, ‘Where’s your cervix?’ ” she says.

“But I’d also come off this huge trial that was kind of the focus of the summer, and I don’t want to be the girl that always has the problems at the table — ‘And now I have cancer!’”

The huge trial Erin is referring to was the one in which she was awarded $ 55 million because she sued the Marriot International hotel chain. She claimed that they knowingly let peeping tom, Michael Barrett to have the room next to her.

This resulted in a nude video of Andrews doing the rounds in 2009. It was a difficult time for the Fox News anchor and Dancing with the Stars co-host, who claimed she felt ashamed and was even close to abandoning her career.

Erin also felt like her illness was not something that was a big deal and that’s part of the reason why she kept quiet about it.

“I also think that I didn’t want to believe it was that big a deal, so we kept it quiet. But the wait was horrible.”

Andrews then went on to speak about the aftermath of her surgery, which took place on October 11.

“At Dancing with the Stars that Monday, I was in my dressing room when the phone rang and [the doctor] said, ‘You’re good. We got it.’ I was like, ’Oh my God,’ crying — while trying on a ballroom dress,” she says.

Nowadays, Erin is hopeful for the future and may be looking into having children.

“I want to continue doing more, but it’s going to be shaped toward how I want to have this family and how I do want to have kids,” she says.

“I think it’s possible that I’ll be able to have a kid and be able to do this for a living. We’re just gonna have to figure out how.”

What do you think about all of this?

Olivia Newton-John: Daughter Slammed for Insensitive Pics After Cancer Diagnosis!

We’ve all heard the sad news about Olivia Newton-John’s breast cancer diagnosis, and while we all know how hard that must be for her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, some people are looking to make it worse.

It seems that Chloe can’t even use social media without getting blasted by misguided “fans.”

The vitriol that she’s received in Instagram comments was so bad … she’s taking a break from social media.

Chloe’s “crime?” Posting pictures of herself living her life and being a person and, gasp, smiling.

You know, being a person. Which is certainly what her mother wants.

But the backlash that she got in the comments — that she shouldn’t show herself doing anything but mourning her mother’s diagnosis — was enough to make her want to step back from the photo-sharing app.

“Some woman commented that I couldn’t post happy pictures of myself because of what my mother is going through. I am so sad and no one has any idea what I am going through,” she wrote.

“I don’t want my life to be public and this [is] the greatest struggle a daughter could go through. And the last thing I need is someone telling me that I can’t distract myself and post normal creative pics on my Instagram.”

Chloe is 31. She’s made some plastic surgery mistakes in the past, but she’s a grown-ass adult.

We’re sure that she’s acutely aware of the weight of her mother’s diagnosis.

She still has to live her life. That’s the most important thing for her to do for her own well-being.

Unless you’re caring for a child, anything else just leads to an unhealthy mindset and resentment.

We can’t imagine that Olivia Newton-John wants her daughter to mope around thinking about cancer at literally all times.

And we don’t have to imagine, because Chloe shared exactly what her mother wants.

“My mom is fine and the one thing she told me is to keep being creative positive and take my mind off anything negative (sic). My mom and I are humans and unfortunately my mother’s cancer has to be everyone’s buisness (sic).”

She really lets the world know how she feels.

“You could never imagine how much we just want to be alone. And not have to deal with the world’s opinions of how we deal with this. I’m going to leave my Instagram for a while. Not. Because Im (sic) ashamed that I posted a pic that wasn’t to do with my mom, but because I’m angry.”

Who wouldn’t be angry?

“Angry that there are such incredibly insensitive assholes out there making me feel ashamed of trying to feel normal.”

And then, after expressing optimism that her mom will beat this, she bids farewell to Instagram.

“Good bye for a while.”

That’s a fair response.

It’s hard to imagine why anyone would want to compound a tragic diagnosis by giving someone’s daughter a hard time just for living her life and trying to steal little moments of happiness.

We’re hoping for the best in Olivia Newton-John’s battle with cancer.

We’re also hoping that humanity, as a collective, becomes a little kinder. Geez.

Oliva Newton-John Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis

This is heartbreaking news.

A cancer diagnosis is never good news. Almost every family has gone through the pain of learning that one of their own has this often terminal disease. We’ve all read about various famous people who’ve been diagnosed.

Unfortunately, today, we learned about one more.

Olivia Newton-John is an absolute legend. She’s supremely talented as a singer and actress. an icon to many members of the LGBT community.

She’s also now a cancer patient.

She issued a press release on the subject. It’s not the most personal way to share information, but sometimes being straightforward and informative is the best route to take when breaking bad news.

And this is the worst kind of news to break.

Olivia Newton-John Press Release

Sometimes, impersonal is best.

Olivia Newton-John had to cancel her North American concert dates for June, but this is one set of cancelations that no decent person could bemoan.

Apparently they discovered the cancer because she had complained of back pain. Frightening to think that something so innocuous could be how you learn that you have cancer.

Specifically, it’s breast cancer that’s metastasized to her sacrum.

It’s also a reminder that even the healthiest people can get cancer.

A lot of people push the idea that overall wellness can prevent cancer, but disease can come from all sorts of sources, and genetics are a powerful factor when it comes to cancer.

Yoga teachers get cancer. Nutritionists get cancer. Marathon runners get cancer.

Living legends do, too.

Fortunately, there are treatments. Olivia Newton-John intends to undergo a short treatment of photon radiation therapy.

From her press release, she sounds optimistic. That can be so important for cancer patients.

And there’s reason to hope. Shannen Doherty recently announced that her cancer had gone into remission

Still, her fans from all over the world will be wishing her a swift and easy recovery. Cancer’s hard, and the life-saving treatment can be even more painful.

If you’ll excuse us, we’ll be listening to “Xanadu” and hoping for the best.

Lady Gaga"s Best Friend Dies of Cancer

Lady Gaga is in need of your thoughts, prayers and condolences.

The singer’s long-time best friend, Sonja Durham, died on Friday after having been diagnosed with stage IV brain cancer.

Durham’s husband, Andre, confirmed the sad news yesterday afternoon, saying his wife passed away “peacefully and beautifully” in their home.

Durham served for a number of years as Lady Gaga’s assistant and executive director.

She played a major role in the singer’s life, both personally and professionally, as their relationship inspired Gaga’s single “Grigio Girls.”

This bonus track is featured on the deluxe edition of Joanne, which came out in October of 2016.

You should go listen to it if you can. It’s beautiful, with lyrics talking about how Gaga and her friends would get together and share deep cries over Durham.

Earlier this year, Durham accompanied Lady Gaga to the Super Bowl for her halftime performance; while Gaga dedicated an acoustic version of “Edge of Glory” to Durham, at Coachella several weeks later.

“My friend Sonja is very sick and I love her so much, and if it’s okay with you, I’d like to sing this song for her,” the star told the crowd upon doing so.

On Thursday, meanwhile, Gaga posted the above photo on Instagram and wrote the heartfelt message below as a caption.

Watching one of my best friends in the world show unfathomable courage, strength, and positivity while battling cancer has really changed my life.

Thank you Sonja for inspiring me and all of us everyday with your joy. I love you so much it brings tears to my eyes just to think of all the years we’ve spent together backstage running the show, taking care of each other.

You are one of a kind. I’m so proud of you.

And you and Andre, your unbreakable beautiful love is what life is all about. You can see it in this photo.

Wanted to share this with the world and show them what true beauty looks like. #grigiogirls #sonjadurham @sonjad7777 I love you girl. I love you so much.

Lady Gaga, who had previously suffered from breast cancer, referred to Durham as her “guardian angel” in an earlier blog post.

Following Sonja’s passing, the hashtah #RIPSonja started to trend on Twitter.

Durham had been close friends with Gaga for about eight years. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and in recent months it had spread to her lungs and brain.

Of “Grigio Girls,” Gaga told fans in attendance at Coachella in April:

‘We were writing it because we were laying around one night and all the girls had gotten together, but Sonja wasn’t there because sometimes we needed to get together without her, because we didn’t want her to see us cry.

“So we formed this pact with each other that, when we needed to, we’d call together the Grigio Girls and cry it out.”

May Sonja Durham rest in peace.

We send our condolences to her friends, family members and loved ones.

Virgin Airlines Turns Away 3-Year Old Cancer Patient

To borrow a saying frequently used on Twitter these days, Virgin Airlines has a message for United and Delta:

Hold my beer.

In the wake of the latter two companies embroiling themselves in indefensible scandals, Virgin has gone ahead and committed what might be the worst PR disaster of all.

Virgin Airlines

Billie-Jean Simon tells The Daily Mail Australia that she and her three-year old daughter, Payton, were boarding a Brisbane flight bound for Newcastle last Wednesday.

The pair arrived at the gate on time, but Payton felt sick during boarding and had to be rushed to the bathroom.

The toddler sadly suffers from acute myeloid leukemia and “you just can’t tell a kid to hurry up when they’re being sick,” Billie-Jean’s mother, Tina Mancini, told the newspaper.

This seems like an obvious statement and not much of a controversy, right?

We wish that were the case.

mother, sick child

According to Tina, Billie-Jean and her sick child returned from the bathroom just “one minute” after the cut-off time for boarding.

Billie-Jean explained the situation to the Virgin employees at the gate.

She said that Payton was on her way to receive stem-cell treatment in Newcastle, an appointment she very badly needed to attend after having already endured 16 rounds of chemotherapy at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

This was all relayed to the attendants and “they closed the door in her face,” Tina told Sunshine Coast Daily.

She added that Billie-Jean could “see people still walking down” the tunnel to the airplane.

It was still parked at the gate. The airline very easily could have let Billie-Jean and her CANCER-STRICKEN young daughter on board.

Alas, they stuck to the absolute letter of their law and did not budge on their boarding policy.

cancer patient

“When she asked about the next flight she was told it would be another $ 600, despite having insurance,” Tina explained. “With money so tight at the moment, it just wasn’t something she could afford.”

Therefore, mother and ill child drove until 1 a.m. to reach their destination.

They have since set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with the financial burden of Payton’s disease.

Over the last few weeks, the airline industry has been caught in one public relations humane disaster after another.

You’ve likely read by now about the United Airlines passenger who was bloodied and bruised after getting dragged off an overbooked flight.

But there was also the Delta passenger who got the boot from a plane for using the bathroom while it was still grounded.

And then Delta was at it again just a few days ago when it threatened to jail a mother and father who initially refused to take their very young kids off a plane that, once again, had been overbooked.

Watch their exchange with a flight attendant below:

But closing the boarding door in the face of a three-year old with cancer?

The competition is stiff, but we need to congratulate Virgin Airlines for this act.

It’s officially the most despicable example of airline company behavior to date!

Charlotte Rae Diagnosed With Bone Cancer

Charlotte Rae has been diagnosed with bone cancer.

The 91-year-old actress confirmed the news in an emotional statement to PEOPLE.

“Last Monday, I found out I have bone cancer,” the Facts of Life star revealed.

“About seven years ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — which is a miracle that they found it because usually, it’s too late. My mother, sister and my uncle died of pancreatic cancer. After six months of chemotherapy, I was cancer-free. I lost my hair, but I had beautiful wigs. Nobody even knew.

“So now, at the age of 91, I have to make up my mind. I’m not in any pain right now. I’m feeling so terrific and so glad to be above ground,” she explains.

“Now I have to figure out whether I want to go have treatment again to opt for life. I love life. I’ve had a wonderful one already. I have this decision to make.”

She was supposed to start treatment on Thursday, but has confirmed she’s going to think on it for a while.

“I wanted to think about it first,” she says.

“I think I’m going to go for it. The side effects were not too bad when I did it originally. I’ve had a great life, but I have so many wonderful things happening. I’d like to choose life. I’m grateful for the life I’ve already had.”

Charlotte has a career in the industry that dates all the way back to 1954. She got her first big break on The United States Steel Hour as Ramona.
