Kate Spade: Drugs Found at Scene of Suicide, But...
We have an update on the tragic death of Kate Spade.
As previously reported, the iconic fashion designer was found dead on June 5 inside her Manhattan apartment.
The cause of death has been ruled a suicide by hanging.
Since this awful news went public, celebrities from across various industries have sent their condolences to Spade’s loved ones, while also expressing their shock and sadness over this development.
Spade was only 55 years old at the time of her death.
Now, TMZ has posted an update on the situation, writing on Thursday morning that drugs were found at the scene of Spade’s suicide.
But there’s a pretty big catch to this detail:
The drugs were not illegal.
According to law enforcement, officers looking through Spade’s Park Avenue residence instead came across the anxiety pills, which were prescribed to the designer.
It’s not even clear at the moment whether or not Spade has any of these meds in her system at the time of her passing.
Previously, Spade’s sister had come out and said her famous sibling had been battling Depression and/or other forms of mental health disease in the years and months leading up to her hanging.
We cannot say for certain if she was ever diagnosed officially, however.
Other insiders have said that Kate’s state of mind took a turn for the much worse after she and her long-time husband, Andy, went through a very difficult period in their marriage last year.
Andy has said in a lengthy statement that he and Kate were separated, but would occasionally dine together or spend time together for the sake of their 13-year old daughter.
This is what Andy Spade said in his emotional response to his estranged wife’s suicide:

Spade allegedly left a suicide note that singled out her child and emphasized how much Bea meant to her.
This is just tragic all around.
Kate’s funeral is being held Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri, where she was born and raised.

Andy Spade Releases Statement, Is in "Complete Shock" Over Kate Spade Suicide
Andy Spade has spoken out in great and heartwrenching detail about his estranged wife’s death.
The statement comes a day after we learned that world famous fashion designer Kate Spade committed suicide inside her Park Avenue apartment in New York City.
She was 55 years old.
“Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was the kindest person I’ve ever known and my best friend for 35 years,” said Andy to open his lengthy message, which continues as follows;
“My daughter and I are devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her. We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already.
Andy and Kate were parents to a 13-year old girl.
And Andy is the brother of David Spade, who released his own statement on Tuesday night.
He went on to address his wife’s mental condition:
“Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives.
“We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock.
“And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling.”
Andy says he and Kate had been living separately for close to a year.
They continued to dine together on occasion and remained a part of each other’s lives, however, for the sake of their child.
He references her in the next part of his statement:
Bea was living with both of us and we saw each other or spoke every day. We ate many meals together as a family and continued to vacation together as a family.
Our daughter was our priority. We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce. We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how.
We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break.
Spade went on to shoot down any talk to the contrary, while emphasizing that his daughter is now his only concern.
“This is the truth. Anything else that is out there right now is false. [Kate] was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety. There was no substance or alcohol abuse.
There were no business problems. We loved creating our businesses together. We were co-parenting our beautiful daughter.
I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.
(According to multiple sources, Kate Spade left a suicide note that assured her child that she loved her and that her fate was not her fault.)
Concluded Andy:
My main concern is Bea and protecting her privacy as she deals with the unimaginable grief of losing her mother. Kate loved Bea so very much.
Since Kate’s passing, a multitude designers, celebrities, fashion lovers and family members have been paying tribute online via photos, statements and personal memories.
We are all devastated by today’s tragedy,” a family statement read, according to The New York Times, adding:
“We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.”

Kate Spade Suicide Note Revealed, As Family Breaks Silence
Yesterday, we reported on the sad news that iconic fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead of an apparent suicide in her Park Avenue home.
Spade’s death came as a complete shock to her fans and colleagues, many of whom viewed the wildly successful businesswoman, wife, and mother as the quintessential woman who “had it all.”
But those who knew her best often saw a different side of Kate.
Friends and family claim that she struggled with a number of emotional disorders in recent years, often displaying symptoms of bipolar disorder.
(It’s not known if she was ever properly diagnosed, or if this is an assessment made by her loved ones.)
A clearer picture of Spade’s anguished final days is beginning to emerge, as several members of the designer’s inner-circle have begun to share their feelings, including Kate’s brother-in-law comedian David Spade.
“She was so sharp and quick on her feet. She could make me laugh so hard. I still can’t believe it,” Spade reflected on social media Tuesay.
A darker remembrance was offered by Kate’s sister Reta Saffo, who told Page Six that she believed Kate’s “happy go lucky” image was a facade:
“She was always a very excitable little girl and I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive,” Saffo stated, adding:
“I will say this was not unexpected by me.”
Meanwhile, TMZ has published excerpts from Spade’s suicide note, which seem to confirm the 55-year-old was distraught over her husband’s decision to end there marriage.
“Bea – I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!” Kate reportedly wrote.
It’s unclear what Kate meant by the “ask daddy” remark, but it’s widely believed that her husband, Andy Spade, was aware of the reasons why she may have taken her life.
Sources say Andy had recently moved out of the apartment he shared with Kate after deciding to end their 24-year marriage.
Saffo said she did everything in her power to try and convince Kate to seek help for depression and mood swings, but was unsuccessful:
“I’d come so very close to getting her to go in for treatment,” I’d spoken with them on the phone (not telling them exactly who the patient would be),” Saffo Told Page Six.
“They agreed to fly in and talk with her and take her with them to the treatment center,” Saffo told Page Six.
Saffo said Spade became fixated on the idea of suicide following the 2014 death of Robin Williams.
“She kept watching it and watching it over and over. I think the plan was already in motion even as far back as then,” Saffo claimed
She says it pained her to give up on her sister, but Saffo eventually ended her efforts to persuade Kate to seek treatment:
“After numerous attempts, I finally let go,” Saffo said.
“Sometimes you simply cannot save people from themselves! One of the last things she said to me was:
“‘Reta, I know you hate funerals. . . but for me would you please come to mine at least.’”

David Spade Breaks Silence on Stunning Suicide of Kate Spade
David Spade is basically at a loss for words.
But he’s done his best to utter a few in the face of a major family tragedy.
As previously reported, Kate Spade committed suicide on Tuesday morning at the age of 55.
The body of this legendary designer was discovered inside her Manhattan apartment around 10:20 a.m., with Spade pronounced dead on the scene shortly after paramedics arrived.
There’s been an outpouring of sadness and sympathy on social media ever since news of this tragedy went viral, as countless celebrities who either met Kate Spade or carried around one of her handbags left comments on Twitter.
David, however, knew Kate far better than most.
She married his brother, Andy, back in 1994, after the two had met at Arizona State University.
Together, this husband and wife team built Kate’s designing business into a global empire.
In an Instagram photo and message posted Tuesday evening, the actor paid tribute to his sister-in-law via a throwback image and its affiliated caption.
“Fuzzy picture but i love it,” wrote David, adding in more detail:
Kate and I during Christmas family photos. We had so much fun that day. She was so sharp and quick on her feet. She could make me laugh so hard. I still can’t believe it.”
In a separate Twitter post, the long-time comedic actor:
“Katy at my book signing. I love this pic of her. So pretty. I dont think everyone knew how f-cing funny she was… Its a rough world out there people. Try to hang on.”
Short. Simple. Sweet. Heartbreaking.
According to various sources, Kate Spade had a history of mental illness.
Her sister, Reta, has even angered some members of her family by telling The Kansas City Star that Spade’s suicide did not come as a surprise to her.
“She was always a very excitable little girl and I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand (KS) may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive,” says Reta.
Insiders hsve confirmed that Kate Spade did leave a suicide note.
It aimed to absolve her 13-year daughter for any blame in her death, while seemingly pointing a finger at her husband.
According to TMZ, the note read as follows:
Bea – I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!”
(Kate’s daughter’s full name is Frances Beatrix.)
TMZ also claims that problems in her marriage recently led Kate down a dark and depressed path, one that eventually culminated in this suicide.
Spade reportedly used a scarf and a knob on her bedroom door to take her own life.
Said her relatives in a statement last night:
“We are all devastated by today’s tragedy.
“We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.”
Elsewhere, Kate Spade New York, the company she founded but ultimate stepped down from over a decade ago, also released a statement after the news broke.
It reads:
We at Kate Spade New York just learned of the incredibly sad news that Kate Spade has passed.
Although Kate has not been affiliated with the brand for more than a decade, she and her husband and creative partner, Andy, were the founders of our beloved brand. Kate will be dearly missed.
Our thoughts are with Andy and the entire Spade family at this time.

Kate Spade Left a Suicide Note for Her Daughter: Report
A handful of new details have emerged in regard to the shocking and tragic death of Kate Spade.
As previously reported, the fashion icon seemingly committed suicide inside her Manhattan apartment on Tuesday morning, with Spade’s housekeeper finding her boss’s body around 10:20 a.m.
Spade was 55 years old.
The veteran handbag maker reportedly used a scarf tied to a bedroom door knob to take her own life.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after this horrible news went public, Kate Spade New York released the following statement via its official Twitter account:
Kate Spade, the visionary founder of our brand, has passed.
Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly heartbreaking time. We honor all the beauty she brought into this world.
We can also now confirm that Spade’s husband was at the apartment when his wife’s body was discovered.
Spade was one of the world’s most famous fashion designers.
She was specifically known and respected for creating a line of handbags and jewelry in the 1990s… which blossomed into a fashion enterprise with over 140 retail stores across the United States.
Kate got her start in the 1980s, working for women’s magazine “Mademoiselle” in Manhattan.
Together with husband Andy (the brother of actor David Space), Spade launched Kate Spade Handbags in 1993; it eventually turned into a full-scale clothing and jewelry line.
Spade sold her company in 2007 and took some time off to raise her daughter.
However, Kate then got back in the fashion game in 2016 by launching a new brand called Frances Valentine … named after her daughter, who’s now 13 years old.
This is especially relevant and sad at the moment because The New York Post reports that Kate did, in fact, leave a suicide note.
It mainly addressed her daughter, telling Frances that her suicide was NOT the teenager’s fault.
A police source, meanwhile, told this same newspaper that the suicide was due to “relationship problems.” We don’t feel comfortable speculating beyond that.
In response to this news, a number of celebrities have expressed their sadness and surprise on Twitter. Take fellow designer Liz Lange, for instance:

Kate Spade Dead of Apparent Suicide, Fashion Designer Was 55
Shocking news from the world of fashion today, as several media outlets have now confirmed that iconic designer Kate Spade has been found dead at the age of 55.
According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Spade hanged herself in her Park Avenue home.
Her body was reportedly discovered this morning by a housekeeper.
Law enforcement sources say Spade was pronounced dead on the scene.
They also confirm that she left a note, but no information about the content has been released to the public.
With the help of her husband Andy — who is the brother of comedian David Spade — Kate launched Kate Spade Handbags in 1993.
The brand was an immediate success, and Kate eventually branched out into clothing and jewelry design.
In 2007, Spade sold her company to Coach in a $ 2.4 billion deal.
After taking some time off to focus on raising her child, Kate returned to the fashion world last year with a new line called Frances Valentine.
The brand was named after her 13-year-old daughter.
Born Katherine Brosnahan in Kansas City in 1962, Kate began designing while still a student at the University of Arizona.
It was there that she met her husband while working in a clothing store.
Together, they decided to launch a business and eventually grew Kate’s eponymous company into one of the most recognized fashion brands in the world.
At its peak, Kate Spade New York had more than 140 retail shops in the US and 175 more internationally.
In addition to being sister-in-law to David, Kate was aunt to actress Rachel Brosnahan, star of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Fans of the handbag maven are baffled, as with her wildly successful business empire and loving, close-knit family, from the outside, Kate appeared to be the woman who had it all.
There’s been no word yet from Kate’s inner circle, but friends and neighbors say the family showed no signs of turmoil.
