Scott Marshall – the tattoo artist best known for winning season 4 of the Spike TV series Ink Master – has passed away at the age of 41.

According to TMZ, Marshall called his wife Johanna on Saturday to tell her that didn’t feel well enough to drive home from the tattoo studio that he owned near Chicago.

He rented a room at a nearby hotel, and Johanna says she became nervous when he didn’t answer his phone the next morning.

She says two police officers came to her door on Sunday night and told her that Scott had passed away.

While she didn’t give a cause of death, Johanna did confirm that Scott’s passing was related to an existing heart condition.

Marshall gained national fame last year when he beat out 16 other tattoo artists from across the country to win $ 100,000 and earn the coveted title of Ink Master.

“He was a great competitor and talented artist,” said a source for the show in a statement issued today. “Our deepest condolences go out to the Marshall family and friends.”

The owner of a successful business with almost two decades of professional experience, Marshall was a respected figure in both his hometown of Chicago and the national community of tattoo artists.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
