Sarah Hyland Shares Shocking Selfie, Explains Why She Was "Torn From Work"
Without getting into specifics, Sarah Hyland has opened up like never before about her health problems.
And our heart aches for the Modern Family actress as a result.
Over the past several months, Hyland has often had to combat chatter that she has an eating disorder, as fans have reacted with shock and dismay over her frail appearance.
The 27-year old has never discussed in great detail exactly what affliction she unfortunately has, but Hyland has confirmed she underwent a kidney transplant in 2012.
In a 2015 interview with Seventeen Magazine, she said simply that she was “born with so many health issues.”
These issues apparently struck again in a frightening manner this week, considering what Hyland shared on her Instagram Story yesterday, which just happened to be National Selfie Day.
(Yes, this is evidently an actual day now.)
“Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle or feelin cute,” Hyland wrote as a caption to the disturbing image below.
“This time for #NationalSelfieDay, I’ve decided to share my truth. As painful as it is.
“So here is my face that was torn from work against my will. But I’m very grateful it was. Health should always come first.”
As you can see, Hyland’s face is horribly and, we assume, painfully swollen.
In a second Instagram snapshot, Hyland wrote that she was hospitalized on Monday, June 18 — and added that her beloved canine, Boo, knew something was amiss right away.
“Can’t wait to come back to my precious angel princess. She’s perfect and knows exactly what I need at all times,” Hyland penned alongside a video of the dog giving her kisses, adding:
“This was taken this past Sunday. Day before hospitalization. She was literally telling me to get treatment.”
Again, it’s unclear exactly what is the matter with Hyland.
But it’s clearly pretty serious.
With Modern Family on hiatus, the actress was working on the comedy movie The Wedding Year when she became ill, an insider tells Us Weekly.
This latest incident comes just over a year after Hyland blasted critics who scoffed at her weight.
“My circumstances have put me in a place where I’m not in control of what my body looks like,” she angrily Tweeted at the time, emphasizing:
“I am working hard to maintain my weight by eating as much protein as possible and continue to be STRONG and healthy.
“There’s no need to worry! I’ve been down before and I’ll probably be down again in my lifetime but I’m steadfast and solid and will conquer my obstacles.”
Sadly, Hyland also has had to deal with tabloid speculating in the past about her appearance and whether she has had any plastic surgery.
“THIS MAKES ME SO MAD to have [doctors] give their opinion ON MY FACE is absolutely ridiculous and degrading,” she tweeted in November, appropriately adding:
“F-ck off.”
In this same (justified) rant, Hyland touched on her ongoing health struggles:
“I have had the worst medical year of my life and to create an entire article surrounding the question of if I’ve had plastic surgery is the MOST insulting thing.
“Adding insult to injury, you have NO IDEA what I have been through. And I have somewhat addressed these rumors already.”
Addressing the magazine Life & Style, which ran the report questioning her looks, Hyland concluded:
People like you are the reason why young girls need to alter their face. MY face has been altered by LIFE SAVING medication. Take your “journalism” and use it for some good. FOR ONCE.

Grey"s Anatomy Fans: Sarah Drew Begs You to Be Nicer to Kelly McCreary
Just last month, Sarah Drew departed from Grey’s Anatomy.
Since then, some of her fans have apparently been harassing her friend and colleague who continues to act on the long-running ABC drama.
Sarah is speaking out … and pleading with her fans to be kind.
Taking to Twitter, Sarah Drew writes to her followers:
“I need to say something to some of you.”
Note that she is not blaming everyone for the actions of bad apples.
“I say ‘some’ because I know that many of you are not participating in this.”
She acknowledges that fans are, of course, passionate about the media that they consume.
“Look, I know these characters mean so much to you — believe me, they mean a lot to me, too — but I do not feel defended when you attack my friends.”
Some of her fans have been giving Kelly McCreary a very hard time.
“My beautiful, loving, loyal sister, Kelly, is a brilliant, fiercely talented team player who ALWAYS shows up and dedicates herself to the stories she is asked to tell.”
Actors should not be attacked for the roles that they play. Obviously.
“Please stop attacking her for doing her job.”
She implores them to remember that the actors are friends.
“When you hurt her, you hurt me.”
She hopes that people will support McCreary as they supported her.
“When you show kindness to her, you show kindness to me.”
She then has a message that we should all take to heart.
“Please be Kind.”
See, Sarah Drew’s character on Grey’s Anatomy, for those of you who haven’t watched the series since the Bush Administration, was in a relationship with Jesse Williams’ character.
A lot of fans, as they watch a show, grow attached not only to characters but to relationships. These fans are known as “shippers,” whether the relationship that they adore is canon or exists only in their hopes and dreams.
Now that Drew’s character has departed from the series, Kelly McCreary’s character is in a relationship with Williams.’
Though these fans, of course, are perfectly aware that these are fictional characters played by actors, sometimes, when you’re passionate about something, it can be easy to blur the lines.
And they’ll send real hate to real people.
Drew is absolutely right for speaking up in defense of her friend. Obviously.
One of the problems with the ready accesibility of actors these days is that they can see their fans at their worst.
For every few dozen people who just tweet politely at their faves, there is some bad apple who tries to ruin social media for everyone else.
A lot of people don’t realize that they are sexually harassing their favorite celebrities. Telling your friend that you’re crushing on a hot actor is one thing. Tweeting to them what you’d like to do with them is … something else.
Livetweeting can then become a hazard, because people might tag an actor as they tweet their hate at a character.
That’s not appropriate. it’s harassment. It’s toxic. It’s also, quite frankly, embarrassing.
It may be that what has fans really upset is the shocking departures of two beloved actors — and their characters.
But that wasn’t McCreary’s fault.
There were also people who tried to blame series star Ellen Pompeo, claiming that her hard-fought salary increase was responsible for the series thinning its cast to save money.
That has been widely dismissed as absurd.
Sometimes, when fans are angry, they blame the wrong people.
We just wish that social media did not make it so easy for them to lash out. Please think before you tweet.

Jim Carrey Slammed for Sarah Huckabee Sanders Painting; Did He Go Too Far?
After Sean “Spicey” Spicer took his minifridge and left the White House in a huff over Anthony Scaramucci’s ill-fated hiring, his unenviable role as mouthpiece for the Trump White House fell to Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Now Jim Carrey, who has taken time off from acting to work on his painting, has come out with a painting of the embattled Press Secretary.
That painting is now controversial. Did he go too far?
Jim Carrey has never been shy about voicing his political beliefs.
Unfortunately, one of those opinions is that vaccines somehow cause autism, which has long been debunked by actual medical experts.
(And, quite frankly, even if it were true, autistic people have pointed out that using that to justify not vaccinating children seems to be saying that parents would rather see their child die of a fatal disease than be autistic)
Not all of his beliefs are irresponsible and medically unsupported nonsense, however.
Like most Americans, Jim Carrey is a strong critic of the Trump administration, even going so far as to dump his Facebook stock upon learning of the social media platform’s role in getting Trump to the White House.
Now, he’s expressing his political views through a different medium: art.
Specifically, painting.
Jim Carrey did not identify Sarah Huckabee Sanders in this painting, merely writing:
“This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked. Monstrous!”
Reactions to this have been mixed.
Some reactions have been to call out Jim Carrey for alleged hypocrisy.
They say that painting an unflattering caricature of a woman flies in the face of what the Left (which, to many critics, is synonymous with Hollywood) claim to represent.
Others believe that the painting, unflattering though it may be, is a warranted caricature of a woman who is voluntarily and vocally aiding an indefensible regime.
To summarize their view with a Kim Kardashian quote that is now a meme: “It’s what she deserves.”
Trump fans on Twitter expressed their displeasure.
“James Woods, do you have a comment about Jim Carrey and the insulting portrait he has presented of Sarah Sanders?”
As far as we can tell, James Woods has yet to respond to this tweet. At the moment, he’s raving on Twitter about how self-driving cars are part of a government plot.
Others tweeted their condemnation of Carrey for his painting.
“What a disgraceful thing to do.”
Another alleged that this is all part of misogynistic elements within Hollywood.
“This is just one more example of how Hollyweird empowers women! #JimCarrey is just doing his portion, right Jim? He’s a has been!!”
It is worth noting that Jim Carrey did not take either of the easy routes for caricature that were open for him with Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
His painting clearly is not emphasizing her weight.
Body-shaming is body-shaming, and poking fun at an evil person for being fat rather than for the evil that they do is, uh, super problematic and distracting from the point that you’re trying to make.
(Some exceptions may apply, but you still want to tread carefully if you don’t want to indirectly insult plenty of nice people)
Jim Carrey also didn’t seem to be calling attention to the fact that sometimes Sanders’ eyes seem to be doing that thing that her father’s do.
That would have been another cheap shot, but he didn’t take that road.
Ultimately, it’s not only Jim Carrey’s Constitutional right to make art, but he may have a calling.
His non-literal paintings show a lot of skill. Specifically, he was able to so easily capture Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ likeness that he didn’t need to identify her by name — and even is caption was just a condemnation rather than a needed clue.
